Maybe this only happens to me, but what is up with photographers hugging me after a shoot that goes well?  My boss doesn't hug me when he lands a big important client.  My old boss never hugged me when.....oh wait, she did, but she was my aunt.  Ok, bad example.  But what I'm wondering is:  How many photographers are huggers?

I'm a handshaker, not a hugger. If a model has gotten undressed to some extent, I would have extra reservations about initiating any hug.

I'm so much not a hugger, it's a wonder I ended up with kids. At least, I'm pretty sure they're mine.

Good question with a not a good answer I guess...I can only provide my own experience/opinions.

Women like to hug!  So because of that, I never know WHAT to do.  Soooo, I play it safe.  I'll either stand there say, "So long have a good day, blah blah" or i'll even put my hand out for a shake.  The vast majority of these turning into hugs initiated by the model.

So yeah, I'm a hugger, but only because they make me.

99% of the time, the model is a pre-emptive hugger.  so are the stylist, hair stylist, and mua.  people like to hug me. it's nice.

I think it's a California thing. When I lived in San Diego, I'd say well over half the models would give me a hug at the end of a shoot. Here In NY, it almost never happens.

I don't generally hug.  There's only one photographer I initiate hugging with and that's because I've worked with him many times, and he's also my friend.  I don't get offended, however, if someone hugs me after the shoot is over.

Damned fashion people are always hugging & cheek kissing around me....

I just suck it up and do whatever they want... I hope it stops at that though :\

(I think they watched too much reality tv)

Oh, I used to just stand back and let them hug everyone but me. But then I realised I was making a spectacle of myself. and wasn't going to win any points like that

Most I've ever done is like the side hug to get a picture with the model.

I'm totally a hugger if the shoot went well, unless the person is just clearly a no-hug zone.  I think that's because a lot of the shoots I do are fairly emotionally intimate experiences, and by the time we're done we're all bonded and stuff.  It's just something that happens naturally as an extension of our enthusiasm for each other.

Paul's probably right, it's a California thing.  Though I hugged Brian, and he's a New Yorker, and he didn't implode or anything.

I shake hands.  If a model hugs me I don't shove her away but it doesn't happen much except with a few models I know well & work with on a regular basis.  If she doesn't initiate it, there's no reason for me to invade her space.  Doesn't strike me as terribly professional to initiate it, either.  Handled wrong, it could turn a whole good shoot in to an "Eeeew, creepy 'tog groped me" thead here.

Most women who model for me are huggers and like hugging to say hello and goodbye. Outgoing, relaxed, happy people who have fun usually make better photos anyway.

Those that are weirded out by it are usually psycho's anyway and are weeded out before they get here as part of the normal screening process. If people who want to model freak out about being touched, it's a red flag to me for someone whos going to be a drama problem for a fussy-(you know what).

I'm not a hugger by nature. I've learned to accept and respond graciously. It's a pretty nice thing to do.

The escort should be stopping the hugging shouldn't he? No physical conctact at all, lest you be accused of molesting them.

I tend to do opposites.  I either just nod to bow slightly as a Japanese person would or I give a big hug.

I hate fake kisses.  Touch me or let me touch you or get away from me.
I do not like handshakes much either.

I'm english and consequently reserved.  However, I live in Switzerland where the three kiss Gruetzi, Ade is applied.  Models usually hug me.  I am content with a handshake.

I think though that there is nothing wrong with hugging.  If the OP is that anti, she should move away.  Most people can spot when a hug is coming.  Or is this just a variation on all photographers want to screw me coz I'm gorgeous thread.  I'm telling you girl.  We don't.  Well not as a consequence of being photographers anyway.

Whoa whoa whoa people!!  I'm not anti hugging, I just thought it was odd.  The photographers in Kansas didn't hug me, this is new for me.  I don't think anyone wants to screw me or whatever, I was just wondering.  I'm not big on the touchy feely with people I don't know all that well.  Sheesh!!  I'll hug from now on ok? smile

I concur.  Usually the model is the initiator of the hug...But it may just be that they're so glad i finally untied them.

I don't know...in my experience a hug and/or kiss on the cheek is pretty standard, and not just with fashion people.  It's just about everybody.

But you have to be able to read who is going to go for what.  There are some people I consider good friends with whom I have never had any physical contact, not even a handshake.

As for it not happening in other business settings, this is true, but model photography is a very social business.  It is about relationships and rapport.  I had a shoot a couple weeks ago with two male models, and I could have perfectly predicted the results the moment they walked in the door based on their handshakes.  The guy who put his bag down to give me the two-handed shake was great.  The guy who kind of gestured with his left hand because his bag was in his right hand was not terrible, but made no connection with either me or the camera.

I hug. No one has ever complained about it, at least to me. With most of my models I wait until they are dressed and ready to leave. One of my models (who has gone on to business) would hug me nude. That was scary because I think she had a crush on me. I think hugging someone who has just put her heart and soul into making beautiful images, often in the nude, is normal. It is a show of appreciation even if you are paying her. I guess people in New York are too uptight for that.

That's exactly right! Where is the escort when you need him?  Maybe we could hear from some experienced escorts on how to abort this hugging behavior before the model is assaulted with this perverse form of "intimacy." When the escort Thread returns, more of this type of productive discussion can occur there.

When I first started shooting, I would offer my hand for a handshake, and kept getting "don't be so unfriendly, give me a hug" from every model I worked with so now I just let them do as they will...
Most models will hug, the ones I've known for a while or whom a connection is made will touch cheeks while hugging. Those I have become friends with will either give me a kiss on the cheek or rest their head on my chest while hugging. I hink only 2 models in 5 years have left with nothing but a handshake...

I don't know. I'd never seen it happen IRL, until I went to NYC. And everyone I was around there were fashion people.  On tv, sure, but real life? No one in Oklahoma (that I know of) does cheek kisses, or air kisses, or whatever they're doing....

Ehh, I'm not a hugger, really. I mean, for friends and family, yeah, but business is business, unless I've worked with you a LOT. A handshake is good enough for me...lol. Although, I worked with KatieK this weekend, and I wanted to hug her for being such an exceptional person to work with...lol
