A simple, "No thank you" doesn't always work.  I tried it once after this amatuer tog kept telling me how he had plenty of other models to pick from so I should feel "lucky", essentially, that he picked me.  I looked at his work and I thought it was done with a disposable camera or something, so when I said no thanks, he flipped out because he said that apparently I thought I was "the shit" and that I think i'm "such a great model".

h'okay whatever.  please dont talk to me when you're still using your disposable diapers... I MEAN CAMERAS.

But if you shoot with me, I can make you famous and teach you sexy French words like, faus pax, French food like toast and fries, and other Frenchy stuff involving tongues.  If you don't shoot with me, you'll never learn these things and never get out of Kansas.

Yea but you know what would happen, one will want to charge $1 more than the other so one can claim the other paid them to shoot.

M$+1 + P$+1 = stupidity

Based on my original equation, TFP/CD makes more sense - it is rocket science after all.

No, it isn't. Its getting sad. And each time it comes up it gets sadder and more pathetic.  And worse than that it is unprofessional.  That readily gets noticed by the newbies and those who just drop in on occasion - pro or not.

For me, this is one of those times that its too bad that all the forums are public and you don't have to be logged in to read them.   Garage Glamour has a backroom for members only where they can tear into each other if they want to.

What this thread shows in a nutshell, especially on the first page of it, is the level of animosity that lurks here, especially among some of the photographers.

There aren't more than a dozen photographers here (and I don't count myself among them) that have the name recognition and agency backing to even begin to tell models that they the models should be honored to shoot with with them.

The rest of you, get over yourselves.  If you can go shoot something other than models, go to someplace called "Badger Mayhem" or "Fruit Bowl Mayhem".  But its time to quit slamming the models.  Pay or not.  But stop bitching at them; its nothing but small minded noise.

Yes, it is sad and you always see this topic in the forums. It gets tiring, which is why I choose to have fun with it.

My goal is NOT to make money off models, my goal is to make money off my photographs.

Sometimes I pay models for shots I can sell as prints. Sometimes models want more than I can pay.  We talk it over and see if we can reach a price that works for both of us. If so, we set up a shoot.  If not, we say thanks, argue a bit over who gets to pay for the  coffee, and part ways.

Sometimes models pay me for shots they can use to promote themselves.  Sometimes I want more than they can pay. We talk it over and see if we can reach a price that works for both of us. If so, we set up a shoot. If not, we say thanks, haggle a bit over who get's to pay for the coffee, and part ways.

Sometimes models want to pose for shots I can sell as prints in return for shots they can use to promote themselves.  Sometimes they want to barter but don't want to pose for shots I can sell.  If we can agree on shots that meet both our needs, we set up a shoot.  If not, we say thanks, argue over who gets to pay for the coffee, then part ways.

So, you see, the real dillemma in negotiations between photographers and models isn't who has the gall to think their time and talent is actually worth money.  It's not who's replaceable by badgers, or who doesn't know their proper place in the "biz" (photographer = god, model = garbage, or so I gather from some of these posts).

No, the real dillemma, the point you're ALL missing, is WHO GETS TO PAY FOR THE GODDAM COFFEE WHEN YOUR MEETING'S OVER!

You people are better than the funny papers.

SIGH! Is this going to require another equation? I WAS trying to keep the rocket science simple.

M$ > PD$ = M*
P$ > MD$ = P*

Translation:

* = Starbucks

Model pay is greater than photographer's desire to pay = model pay for Starbucks

Photographer pay is greater than model's desire to pay = photographer pay for Starbucks

I was actually trying to work this into my plan (mentioned earlier) to help balance out the equation, but it keeps falling through when the model sees I want the venti chai tea latte with an add shot, and all she wants is a tall drip.

May have to rework the equation to accomodate that, maybe the person that orders the more expensive coffee pays?

M*$ > P*$ = M pays

M*$ < P*$ = P pays

I'm beginning to think we need a unified field theory to explain everything. This is beyond my capabilites, we need a rocket scientist.

My first day in school my teacher stated' " Good luck in your careers, Photography is one of the only careers that you can pick up equipment and immediately have a job. "  I think there are so many new photographers doing TFP's that many clients are treating all photographers like students. With the instant gratification of digital imagery, some are even shooting themselves for portfolios and creating amazing photoshop images.

The business of photography/modeling is:

When you book a gig for print- you hire a model
When you shoot a gig for sale- you hire a model
When you need images taken- you hire a photographer
If you're a photographer you can offer to shoot TFP
If you're a model you can trade out your image for prints or cd

But that's if you have talent.  If you don't know what you're doing, have a crappy camera, and half-ass everything, no one's going to pay you.

Unless your'e offering to make them rich and famous if they'll only pay you $2,000 up front...

But I'm very selective about who and what I shoot.

you have to take the average logarithmic energy decrement per espresso per subject, the faster half life of the drinks, which will depend on milk content of course, then add to that the amount of time spent in line.  (T(ave)).

Then smak yourself for going to starbucks.
