Yes and there are models who receive requests for TFP and consider it spam as well.

Just a comment about the tfp's and tcpf's. and so on and so on.  First and foremost as a photographer not only are you helping the career of an up and coming Model both Male & Female but you are also in this business as an Artist and a business Person.  I agree that a model should pay for their pictures as well as I think that a Photograper should pay for his equiptment.  If a model is interested in using your time to shoot she or he should pay.  I've been on both sides of this globe.  It made me respect the art of photography as a job not a thrill seeking hobby.  When you get to a certain level as a Model then I can see the benefit of you wanting to get paid, but like any other job no one's time is worth just amere thank you!  I have had a lot of models whom I have never heard of try and get upset about me not wanting to give them a free photo shoot.  But If I ask them to go to Sammy's Camera and pick up a light that might best suit their shoot their ready to sprint a 100M dash out of the studio.  I cant get mad at the one's that think that this business is for those that dont have to pay their dues,  I'm just one of those photographers that have paid dues and are still paying dues.  My career is not going to be guided by amatuer Models who feel that I owe them my time and creativity.....Hopefully enough said.

We are no better or less than each other. Why don't we all just lose the attitudes, and work together to become successful at what we all love.

Quite wasting time whinning about making money, and make connections that could lead to great opportunities, and wealth.

My thing is this, don't ask me to shoot you, then get offended if I offer my rates.
Film, developing and make up doesn't grow on trees. Especially if i'm shooting just to be shooting, I.E. Portfolio work. Why should I be the one to cover all of this if i'm not the one who had enough interest to initiate contact?

Exactly.

I agree but apparenty because it is not in my equation. This calls for a revised equation

M model
P photographer
D desire to work with
$ pay

< Less than
T TFP/CD
C client

MD < PD = M$

MD = PD = T

There, that should fix it.

Really, sometimes the attitudes here astound me.

I love you Theda...MM would be a worse place without you, really. smile In response to the thread, I agree w/ the both sides of the fence thing. Everyone out here is trying to get paid work...okay, maybe not everyone, but most...and we are essentially each other's competition, so the fact that i tell you i have rates (i have always shot tfp, btw), shouldn't blow you out of the water....but yes, i agree that if you contact me, my rates; if i contact you, your rates.

tho the models AND photographers on here who are trying to get paid w/ inferior work  (in my opinion) is surpsingly high...

You mean you can actually get models to go for that? I don't think I've ever shot artisic work in exchange for soemthing I "needed" for my portfolio. For it's own sake, yes. For money, sure. But not for headshots.

I've made similar deals to this on several occasions.  If there're new models who're interested in/willing to work in artistic styles that I need, I will shoot straight portfolio for them.
It's been mixed success, but I've had a few good results.

Fully agree with this statement.

I shoot because I love to.  I would figure models pose for the camera because they love to.  If they are in it for just the money, its a desire I don't want to work with.

Granted money is nice all around.  But If I don't currently have a paying project, and the model doesn't have a current paying project.. Why not just get together take a few photos and have fun?

All those Elites out there whom only get paid... Good for you.  Im glad you can get paid on a constant basis.

Please, I just ask you all to not come crying about it on a site like this.  Where all levels of XP are there, and all differnt types of people are here.

Now, if you were on an 'Elite Only' where it was fully expected that every one get paid for everything.   that would lead you umm... well.. broke even I guess, cause if the the Photog and MUA splits costs to pay the model and the Model and MUA split costs to pay the photog and the photog and model split costs to pay the MUA, than well.. looks like everyone breaks even.  so whats the point?

Yet, if there is a "CLIENT" behind the scense, than they are paying everyone and everyone is happy right?  so until that client comes by... there are a couple things you should do.

Politely Decline
Shut the hell up and pay
Ignore.

if there is an exceptional vission the photog has, and it is gonna cost a bunch of out of pocket money and the model shows intrest, it might be in the best intrest to pay the photog for prints... but not nessisarly the shoot itself.

Now if the photog has same vission and contacts a model, whatever the compensation may be is between the photog and the model to agree upon.

to me... its nuff said.

A simple, "No thank you" doesn't always work.  I tried it once after this amatuer tog kept telling me how he had plenty of other models to pick from so I should feel "lucky", essentially, that he picked me.  I looked at his work and I thought it was done with a disposable camera or something, so when I said no thanks, he flipped out because he said that apparently I thought I was "the shit" and that I think i'm "such a great model".

h'okay whatever.  please dont talk to me when you're still using your disposable diapers... I MEAN CAMERAS.

Ok, maybe we can solve this once and for all.

All the "best" models that only want to work for money, and all "best" photographers that only want to work for money, write each other a check for each other's time and shut the hell up!

This will require good negotiating skills, as, if done correctly, it'll balance out to zero and all the fragile egos will come away unscathed as you actually did get paid.
