I recall documentaries showing women in hunter-gatherer societies walking around topless and nothing is thought of it.  Breast-morality seems to arrive with agriculture and keeping domestic animals.  I wonder what that's about.

Yeah......you can see it if you can get a special pass from the Indonesian government and go up in the hills of Irian Jaya.......of course, if you're a guy, you'd better bring your penis gourd. There are few (very few) hunter-gatherer tribes left anywhere in the world........

yea, there are very few hunter-gatherer societies left on the planet, but there are still plenty of small scale farming societies that walk around nakee too.

you probably mean the vast majority of industrialized countries.

No disrespect intended Jessalyn, but you sound severely cultural-centric and naive. You need to get out more.

Most countries of the world considers Americans to be like promiscuous whores of Hollywood. Girls Gone Wild is broadcast everywhere in the world, and it's stuff like this that represents us. In fact, maybe it does.

China is extremely strict on "pornography"  ... India is very conservative to the point of wife burning to protect the reputation of the family. How much of the world is Muslim, and in today's climate, what's the Muslim view about showing skin in public? South American is highly conservative about these things. Try a nude photo shoot in Mexico and see what happens if you get caught.

That short list of demographics is most of the world.

Where is this great and omnipresent liberalism with nudity you claim exists, outside of brothels and sex districts? Amsterdam? Hamburg? Patpong? ... or is it because western Europe shows boobs on shampoo commercials? When we go to a nude beach here, we are nude. Most public sunny places in Europe are topless but not bottomless.

I like you Jessalyn, but I must respectfully disagree. You need to get out into the real world more and stop listening to so much local anti American propaganda.

no no, my comments weren't meant to be culture-centric, my comments were trying to show that "industrialized" countries aren't the only ones in the world. what I was getting at is there there are plenty of tribes across this world that are prefectly fine with nudity. I completely agree with what you said above. but the locations you mentioned (except for India which is up for debate on being "industrialized" since parts are and parts aren't) are "industrialized" countries.

and I love you Click, but I'm disappointed that you played the age card on me.

nipples by themselves are fine.

Once you attach a boob to a nipple you get banned in Kansas.

Exactly! The biggest complaint American women have when traveling here in Asia is how the local men expect them to have sex with them at the drop of a hat. They get the idea from imported American TV shows and American movies so when they see some American women wearing a tshirt without a bra standing at the bus stop, they assume they're going to get some action.

Boy, do they get a surprise.

Fred Phelps is a boob but he hasn't been banned yet. We just need to attach a nipple to him and I think we're good to go.

I could have written something very similar to what Jess wrote here. 20 years ago, tripping on cheap blotter acid. I have to call CNN. India is "up for debate" again.

I once wrote a thread titled "what if I photoshop a male nipple on?" With this same question as to why it is that male nipples are not taboo to show to children.

The best explaination I recieved was that breasts are still considered sexual in nature... Anything that is sexual in it's utility shouldn't be shown to children. male nipples are not a sexual utility (some would argue that) and thus are just fine to put in childrens books.

The Female nipple is our first mandala and visual mantra.. it provides us with all the nourishment we need as infants.. we become addicted to it .. and later we are deprived of its image... go figure!!!!
the female nipple provides nourishment... the male nipple has no such function as far as i know...
that would be the basic difference.. but why one is taboo and the other is not is a mystery
Maybe....
the taboo has to do ith that initial experience we all have with the nipple if we are breast fed.

just my 2 cents worth

If a guy got breast implants, would it be considered 18+? Think about it... you have to wonder.... if the answer is no, then why? If the answer is yes, then why?

This is the result of society banning public display of female nipples.
If women went topless all the time, nobody would pay to see anyone's nipples.

It's not really a direct answer, but I think it illuminates the question a bit:

What percentage of women will pay money or stand in line to see a guy's nipple?

Interesting, huh.

In Europe, the female body is considered a work of art.... In the U.S., people are brought up believing that it should be private... unless of course, it is an art model... why?

Tit?

tit -noun
1. a titmouse.
2. any of various other small birds.
3. Archaic. a girl or young woman; hussy.
4. Archaic. a small or poor horse; nag.
5. a teat
6. Slang: Vulgar. a breast.

Cecil Sharps wrote:

No it is teh tit.  Male nipples and female nipples can look very similar.  Personally i'd like to visit a world where the tit is free to wander around in the sun.  Being social and talking to people on the street.

I wouldn't want to live there because i think tits might loose some of thier magical qualities if they were allowed to roam free.

You should live in Ontario - A couple of years back a young lady took a court challenge all the way to the Supreme Court - her argument - If men can go topless in public, the equal rights law says women can too - the Court agreed - so it is legal in Ontario for women to go topless in public - unfortunately few do -

I've gone to Puerto Peñasco and Puerto Vallarta and shot nudes in the beach. The cops came by, I gave them a $100 bill and they gave me a password in case other officers came by and then he went on his way.

I always find it funny that the TRAVEL channel will have a disclaimer about "INDIGENOUS NUDITY", meaning they will show nipples and blurred crotch of any non whites from non industrialized cultures.

As I was watching one program I wondered what would happen if one of the women studying the culture decided to strip and really live the culture if the travel channel would show her nipples.. ??

they did a show on the Canne film festival and didnt show ONE topless woman on the beach.. I have been there and there were more nipples than I could count.. But they thought nothing of showing Indian and African nipples..

Wouldnt the nipples on the beach at Cannes be INDIGENOUS...???

Main Entry: in·dig·e·nous
Pronunciation: in-'di-j&-n&s
Function: adjective

1 : having originated in and being produced, growing, living, or occurring naturally in a particular region or environment
2 : INNATE, INBORN
