Do nude shots scare off other models?
I know that there is probably a thread on this somewhere, but I couldn't find it and I'm looking for some advise and opinions. My portfolio is currently pretty all-american and I don't mind that all and those are the type of girls that I like shooting the most. But I recently did my first figure study shoot. I like some of the results, I think they are classy, but I'm wondering if putting a figure-study type nude on my site will scare off models from working with me. I certainly would never ask anybody to take their clothes off unless doing nudes was specifically discussed and agreed to before the shoot. I would like to do more figure studies, but I don't want to be known as a nude specialist. My reputation is very important to me and I since I'm just getting start doing fashion photography (I shoot stock work most of the time and I'm represented by Getty Images) I want to attract people to shoot with me, not scare people away. What do you think? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Greg Oct 03 06 11:36 am Link I was thinking of taking the nudes off my site so I am interested in hearing what models have to say also. Good post! Oct 03 06 11:40 am Link Make a second web site. I don't think many people on MM care if you have a few nudes in your portfolio, but your personal web site should reflect what you want to shoot most. Oct 03 06 11:41 am Link Do you really want to work with someone who is so easily scared? Oct 03 06 11:42 am Link I can't speak for the rest of us, but they don't scare me off if you have other well done images on your page. And I usually read a person's profile, so if you mention that you do other types of photography, then I'm usually fine. It's the photographers who state in their ports that they only work with models willing to get naked regardless of what the project entails that make me keep it moving. Oct 03 06 11:43 am Link I rarely come across a photographer that doesn't have nude images. It doesn't bother me. The content is going to be discussed before the shoot so there should be no problem. Oct 03 06 11:43 am Link I love how he asked for models' opinions and the first like 5 posts are from photographers. Oct 03 06 11:44 am Link So far, the nudes on my site have found me models. If you shoot trash it will put them off, if you shoot art it wont, well excpet for those that are anally retentive about nudity. Oct 03 06 11:45 am Link Do nude shots scare off other models? No.. That's what my bio pic is for.. Oct 03 06 11:46 am Link YeagerVision wrote: I make my living as a photographer so yes....if a lot of clients are being scared off because of nudes I want to know it. The greater part of my work is fine art nudes and I've never had any complaints from models I've shown them to, nor have any models run out the door in fear after having seen them. Figure studies are legitimate and demonstrate your versatility. I would consider a model who freaked after having looked at a true figure study to be immature or else overly conservative. In either case, I'd probably be better off not working with her on any type of photos. I think the only time most models would have second thoughts is if the photos shown were T&A or porn (and I'm not suggesting your work is that type), in which case she might very well have legitimate concerns as to the photographer's intentions. But then I'm in the UK, where people don't worrry about these things, and you are in the land of the free, where they do. I guess you give a damn a little Oct 03 06 12:21 pm Link Melissa Lynnette wrote: Why are you surprised? Oct 03 06 12:24 pm Link It doesn't bother me any. What bothers me is when there is pretty much nothing but nudes and they aren't tastefully done. But I think it shows the variety of your work and if you put something on your page saying what you do there shouldn't be a prolbem. Oct 03 06 12:24 pm Link The answer is yes,and you should put nudes in your portfolio for just that reason.Just as you should not hide that you do nudes. You don't want to work with anyone who is that scared or paranoid about working with a photographer who does nudes. Oct 03 06 12:26 pm Link I hope so. Oct 03 06 12:28 pm Link Thomas B wrote: Well, the OP did ask what I thought. And that's what I think. Actually, you do guess wrong. I give not a jot. If I ask someone to do nudes then they can see in my portfolio the sort of nudes I do. And if someone's going to be worried that I will in some way coerce them into posing nude when I said they wouldn't have to, then they're either not going to turn up, which is annoying, or be uneasy when they do, which will probably result in some rubbish photographs. Oct 03 06 12:47 pm Link Personally, I don't do nudes but I also see nothing wrong with those that shoot them or pose for them; but for me if I visit a photog's port and it is just plastered with nipple shots, models with their legs wide open and crack shots..then of course I won't contact them or work with them.Have nudes on hand upon request, and state that in your port.I find that's the best way to be available to whoever may have a problem with it or who actually wants it. Oct 03 06 12:53 pm Link opinions from models and photographes are welcomed! Thanks Greg Oct 03 06 12:56 pm Link nudes dont scare me off, as long as they are tastefully done. personally, i won't shoot them, but i still like to admire good art Oct 03 06 12:56 pm Link posting the kind of photos that I actually make gets me the models I actually want. No false advertising makes for less bad experiences. Oct 03 06 01:32 pm Link yes Oct 03 06 01:33 pm Link It all depends on the degree of your work..is it tastefully done? artistic? the caliber of your work is what makes me want to shoot with a photographer....if their images are bad whether they are nude or not, it deters most models. I recently shot my first nude shoot and I thought it turned out amazing, the part that is uncomfortable for models is not seeing the nude shots, it's the process that is takes to create those images is what used to make me nervous...now I see things from a different perspective since I've tried nude. So, don't knock it til you try it right? Danielle Henry Oct 03 06 01:41 pm Link I put up all of my work, Fine Art Nudes included on both my MM page and on my personal webiste (which needs an update, I KNOW) because I shoot such a variety of things, I like to give a little taste of it all. I know I shoot Fine Art Nudes tastefully, so I never worry. If a model doesnt like it, they dont have to look at it. It shouldnt scare them, though. Not in my portfolio, atleast. 99% of the time I never ask a model to do any Fine Art Nude work. I let them come to ME if they are comfortable and are looking to shoot that sort of art. The 1% of the time I DO ask anyone for Fine Art Work (if Im looking for an update), they have it listed on their page as something they do, enjoy doing, are comfortable with, and the photos in their portfolio under this catagory are also tastefully done. I enjoy shooting Fine Art Nudes because one of my (double) majors in college was illustration, and sometimes I dont feel like picking up a pencil or charcoal at the moment, Id rather capture it on film, 1-2-3. Then maybe later go back and turn it into another medium. However, its not the ONLY thing I shoot, nor is it the only thing I ENJOY shooting. Im up for lots of stuff...dont be scared, models!! Thats my 2 cents. Oct 03 06 01:53 pm Link Ched wrote: exactly when did topless implied become nude? Oct 03 06 02:49 pm Link for models, if you shoot nude, but do not wish to have them posted, it's easy to just post "nude photos available for serious inquiries" Oct 03 06 02:51 pm Link Mandy McKeating wrote: "Topless implied" means that the model is wearing something that covers all the important parts but is posed in such a manner that would IMPLY that she is not. Oct 03 06 02:56 pm Link I think Implied is ok on there and nude but not all of them or on the avi. It does scare some models away from working with that photographer bc they think that they would expect alot out of a shoot! But that's just my opinion! Oct 03 06 02:58 pm Link I'm in the very conservative midwest...do lots of nudework...and still find no shortage of models who want to work with me, in all genres. But I make it very clear in my profile... that nudework is only an option, and certainly not expected of any model. If I was courting commercial clients,advertisers.... I sure as hell wouldn't include anything remotely erotic,nude,suggestive... no matter how beautiful. Model agencies in this area are VERY conservative, and they certainly understand the market.
