What makes a photographer "creepy"?

Is it his age? If a photographer is over 40, is he automatically creepy?

Is it his appearance? If he is not wearing a polo shirt and polyester slacks, is he automatically creepy?

Is it his demeanor? If he tells a woman that she is attractive, and he would like to shoot with her, is he automatically a "perv" and "creepy" because she doesn't consider him to be attractive?

Help me out, ladies!

I think if he/she slurps in between words, they are creepy. If they have a saliva problem.

Hi Image K,

I am happy to answer your question... My interpretation of a creepy photog is one who crosses the professional barrier while shooting.

I had a shoot a few months ago with a photographer who at first i thought was very polite when we met before the shoot. He was of age, soft spoken and gracious, until we shot.....

Then he started on sexual topics, throughout the shoot, and by the end of the shoot, he did something VERY VERY unethical!

He asked me what else I wanted to do, and I said, well I'm all out of ideas, so whatever you would like to do, we could do (obviously talking about photo ideas)
he then sat back in his chair, rubbed himself and said, "oh, well I can think of many other things we could do"

and THAT is creepy. I will never shoot with him again. haven't received all my images from him, but not too concerned. If I never see him or hear from him again, that will be to soon...

If you ever noticed when Former Rep. Mark Foley spoke, he had to swallow after every few words. No doubt because he was reacting in a Pavlovian manner to a young page boy crossing his view.

I completely understand that.

What I don't understand is when I hear models talk about "just another 40 year old guy with a camera".

I'm 42. I 'm overweight. I shave my head, and have a goatee. I look like I'm on a work-release program from Sing-Sing.

On the other hand, I'm a spiritual man. I am reliable, hold down a great job at a major hotel and casino, and am well respected and loved by my co-workers and friends.

I really don't think that my age and my appearance, and the fact that I am obviously not as attractive as my models makes me "creepy".

Do you?

Obviously we are talking about a wide gamut of individuals here. Like the poster above whose photographer groped himself... I can't identify with that shit. I would never even remotely do anything like that, I like to make great photographs, this is what I'm thinking about — lighting, poses, images for christs sake. If you walk away from a shoot with shots that look like ass, then your head is in the wrong place.

I'm sure there are those who are creepy and when presented with a younger female model (male for some too) think they are in some position of power and try (try) to take advantage of that situation. That's when they start salivating.

ok so now that I posted my fun I will get into this a bit more, but you have to think about the first impression you make on a person, if you dress like a shlump them most likely people will think you are a creep, when you go to them and say hey I am a photographer, now if you dress well, i'm not saying to be in a suit but have your clothing pressed tuck your shirt in wear a belt, make sure your clothing matches and people will not think you are a creep off the back.

next step, don't hit on the model and don't play with your willy during a shoot.

Nope, I don't think that would make someone close to creepy... See, lots of models think that looks age and appearance make every person who or what they are, but that's not true...

Works from his creepy basement. Has a soft, demented voice close to Floyd the Barber. Speaks in tones and terms from the Kodak photography books from the 60s and 70s. Shoots all his young models the same way and with the same props. He is obsessed with his models. Polyester. Paneling. Tilts his head slightly when he speaks, and with an odd, grotesque half-smile. Writes poems as tags to models. Can't understand why phenomenal talent never returns his messages. Works with mostly naive, meek, often dumpy young girls. Doesn't care that he doesn't get paid.

Sounds pretty specific, huh?

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not losing any sleep over it.

I think it's kind of funny when a model refers to a photographer as "creepy" because of his age or his appearance.

Brad Pitt is in his early 40's. He sometimes goes days without shaving. He has been known to tear up hotel rooms. He is a known philanderer.

But something tells me that if he was handing out business cards to young girls, telling them that he is a photographer, and asking them to shoot, he wouldn't be called "creepy".

yes cause he knows how to dress and he is famous, but if he looked like this guy
https://jam.canoe.ca/Television/2006/08/27/jampbtbag256.jpg who happens to always play the part of a sick pervert, people would think it. I bet there are plenty of people in the world that think the actor who does play these parts is sick in real life cause of the image he plays on TV and anyone that even looks close to him

Again, I wouldn't be too worried about being called anything. But, frankly, unless you're providing your price list with that card, it just doesn't seem to me that what you described is the best way to grow a business.

It's like porn, i know it when I see it.
I am guilty of wearing jeans all the time and sneakers as well as T-shirts un-tucked I am 49 with half my right leg torn off. I still have all my hair on my head and don't slurp at all since therapy
I guess I am a creep,but I still make great images.

Had one that qualified as 'creepy' (he's not listed in my photogs i've worked with).

20 emails a day
Showed up when me and other models were out on town
Asking for "private" or "our secret" shoots (nude when I'm 16/17yr old)

I could go on, but I think you can get the idea here.

I can't really think of any physical attributes that would automatically qualify as "creepy" with me. Maybe if  he had a wee little conjoined twin growing off his shoulder - now that might be a tad creepy.

I think it's mostly in the realm of professionalism, manners and being a gentleman. Deviate from those attributes and you'll end up on the creepy list.

I'd think it would be a tip off  if they had their cock out during the shoot and made moaning noises. That for sure would be creepy.

now if one of those creepy female photographers has her cock out ...be afraid, be very afraid... she can moan if she is quiet as to not drown out the model's moans

What about creepy models?

You know the type.  Attractive.  Personable.  They claim to love your work.  Say they'll shoot whatever you want.  You decide on a fashion theme.  You have your entire crew setup.  You turn your back on them for one second to load your camera (stupid film inserts taking friggin forever to setup) and the next thing you know BAM they've told your creative team to leave, they're completely nekkid, touching themselves in manners unbecoming of a lady, and they start slapping you on the ass & calling you their bitch...

What?!  Am I the only one...?

I second the motion. Perhaps at the time it happens they are too shocked to think rationally and later are just glad to be out of there.

Creep's typical ploys:
Asks models if it's OK for him to go change into his shorts.
Straddles them while they're laying down, holds the camera to his crotch and says, Oh baby you're so HOT!" and other creep-talk.
Openly videotapes his sessions.
Brought out "toys" and lube for one model for a non-nude shoot in an attempt to escalate the content.
Touched breasts and ass, and not accidentally.
Tried helping the model undress.
Rubbed a model's legs after she removed her shoes.
Talked a model into topless, then straddled her (kneeling), put one knee in her chest to capture an authentic look of horror.
Routinely tries to get girls to go beyond their limits.
