Post the funny excuses you've heard for cancellations.  I have to say these are more likely to be model cancellations.  Photographers generally dont come up with absurd justifications but there's probably a smattering of them as well.

I have two stories -- one called to say she's been in the hospital suffering from dehydration.  She was a waitress at a BAR for godssakes!

One cancelled on me twice -- no notice the first time, family death the second time -- and then wanted to book a THIRD time.  And she was pregnant to boot.  LOL.

I've never cancelled (that I can recall!) but have been cancelled on. The excuse wasn't funny, it was hurtfull.

One of the funnier things I've heard while on a shoot though:

Random helper guy: "Hey, do you girls want some coke?".

Me: "Oh no thanks, I have to drive".

Other model: "I'm not thristy thanks".

I love the model's response!  Either she was being deliberately obtuse or innocently naive or comically saying no.  It just works.

Well wait, I'm not sure which way the guy intended.  Which one of you made the funny?

He meant the snorting kind. I thought my response was pretty amusing but hers was.... Yeah. I'm hoping she was being funny. But judging by the silence afterwards, I think she thought the guy meant the slurping kind.

I don't think it is particularly "naive" to not realize someone is offering drugs (unless he's holding it under your nose at the time).  Many of us grew up NOT having hard drugs offered to us day in and day out.

I've had a photographer cancel on me because of the weather. Apparently he just knew the weather for the next month would be absolutely unbearable for shooting. Funny that it hadn't occured to him when we were discussing the shoot before, though.

I didn't mean anything derogatory about it.  That's why I said "innocently naive" meaning just that ...no experience with drugs.  And as Martha Stewart would say.."That's a good thing."

Yeah... I'd say it was a stereotype.  I'm a biker - as in a member of a motorcycle club as well, riding an old Harley chopper too.  Just retired from the Army, and I've never done any type of drugs like that, and I don't hang around with the people that do either.   Gee... maybe he only offered it since all of the stories of the super models out there going into rehab for coke?  Oh wait?  could that be a steroetype as well?????

Maybe we ought to start a few new groups here: One so that all of those gorgeous models who've been cancelled on could ocme shoot with me. And the other for all of those photogs who've been cancelled on could go somewhere to cry on each others shoulders!

Direct quote from e-mail received last October:

i have sucsessfully torn my back up this morning when i was releasing raccoons i trapped ...tomorrow i am spending the day in my dad's office in hopes that he can put me back together ( he's a chiropractor ).  so i am having to postpone all my shoots for tomorrow.  i will keep you posted on my recovery and hope we can reschedule this asap.

This continues to be my gold standard of questionable flake excuses. BTW, it was from an experienced model, not a newbie.

The reason I knew it was a flake excuse was because I never heard back. IMHO, a model proves that they were telling the truth by following up afterwards.

OK, the model was joking. But it really bugged my eyes out for a second.

Sorry, I somehow double-posted that.

The model had been out to my place for a shoot the week before and wiped her car out on a turn about 5 miles from my house and totalled it. So I told her "make sure you don't kill yourself coming to or from one of my shoots!"  Which is why she told me she was dead. smile Actually what had happened was that the friend who was going to lend her a car left her hanging, so it was a pretty good reason to cancel a shoot.

(oh no, I have a shoot today, and am getting paid).....guess I can't follow those shabat rules thing too well..... But I am sure to make love to my mate every sabbath evening. lol.

I had been talking to a model for about 3 months (hint here photogs... if you have been talking to a model any longer than a month with no shoot... there probably wont be anything more than talking) we scheduled a saturday, 29th. The wednesday before I wrote to confirm our shoot and to ask for her cell phone number.

I got back an email saying... It's my fiances birthday that friday! What happened to the 29th?

I wrote her back saying the shoot is for saturday on the 29th... and asked for her cell phone number again.

To this date I have not heard back from that model.

Not sure what I would say to her.

Nobody with any sense of self worth or professionlism would dare to stand you or anyone up. I have been sick, and in a state, and have made an appointment, and that is what i I fulfilled. An Appointment made is a dollar spent, and life is not about money, but life is about respecting that everybodys time is important. I am not working, but I have never considered my time less important than anyones. Even unemplyed I still consider that my time is woth some kind of money, Like I consider that everybody elses time is too...i would never be so rude to waste others time, i hope they would respect me the same. :-) respect is the key, there is no excuse.

I have seen this to both true and not true in my own experiences. You must follow your instincts to decide if things will go anywhere.

It's a lot like flake excuses. As long as the model follows up on each setback, there is hope.

You would think, I mean the more reasonable of us think it's just common sense.  But unfortunately I've seen it happen too often.  In fact, I was working post production for an HBO series and 2 employees just disappeared when they went out on a "smoke" break.  2.5 hours went by before someone got a call.  Turns out they got arrested for drugs.

Wow, then please come shoot with me. I've been here a little more than a month. First scheduled MM shoot called to reschedule. On day of reschedule, she called to push shoot up by more than an hour. I agreed, busted my ass to make it--no show, no call, no email-nothing. Second MM shoot has rescheduled twice and I'm hoping it happens today (her excuses were valid). Then, three successful MM shoots. Then, a model was supposed to show up yesterday. I hadn't heard from her in a few days so day before the shoot, I emailed to confirm. No response. Day before, I emailed and said "need to hear by 3 today or Im cancelling the MUA". At 430 I heard yes, yes I'll be there. Day of shoot at 8:30 am--oops, sorry, some relative broke something and I can't make it. Whatever the crisis was, it didn't stop her from being on MM later that day. Folks, time is precious and if we're scheduling something, it means I've set aside the time (and maybe someone else's like an MUA). Trust me, I've got other things to do

Once when I thought I'd like to be a model I had a shoot scheduled with a (female) photographer from a soft-porn website about 2 hours from where I live.  I freaked out the afternoon of the (evening) shoot and called 2-3 times to tell her I'd changed my mind and I didn't want to shoot, but I got no answer.  I left phone messages telling her I wouldn't be coming.  Late that night she came online all pissed and said she and her roommate (?) had been up waiting for me and I never showed.  I apologized for wasting her time but I HAD left voicemails when she didn't answer and I don't think it's totally unreasonable to change my mind about taking nude pictures that would be directly published to a website without my ever seeing them.

This isn't a stupid excuse exactly, but I did piss off a photographer by cancelling at the last minute.  In my mind, it was better than doing it and regretting it though, and in this case it's not like I could have shown up and just shot fashion or casual or something instead of porn.

Bottom line-there are no good excuses for cancelling with so little time remaining that the photographer is on the hook for their time and can't reschedule something else. It's inexcusable. Period. If you had qualms about doing nudes, you should have talked to the photographer about that from the beginning-giving her the option of saying, no, I don't want to risk losing my precious time. If there's a model I really want to shoot and she's uncomfortable about nudes, I'm perfectly willing to work with her on something else. Yesterday's shoot was for headshots. Luckily, I had pencilled in another model at the last minute and I kept the MUA and we did some great work that will add to all three of our books. But there are at least two other models I would have scheduled to shoot that day specifically for my needs had I not set aside the time for the no-show.
