Why MM?
Why are we here?? I joined MM because I thought it would help me network with some great people. I have. But there are always some people here that make you question yourself. Like why you're even here. It's all such a game. . .but why??? Thoughts? May 21 06 06:59 pm Link Jayne Jones wrote: Suggestion from a friend.lol. Honestly my friend told me to join so i did. May 21 06 07:04 pm Link Jayne Jones wrote: I joined for that same reason but you are right...maybe it's just harder to get started for some than others...But, don't give up May 21 06 07:06 pm Link I agree on that, especially seeing the threads by photographers bitching about models not paying photographers, and accusing them of not being "real" models or serious about their careers...and the implication that if you are not "serious" about modeling, then you should not even bother. Reading some of the threads here makes me sincerely wonder if I'm all wrong in just seeing modeling as something fun to do on the side... It also makes me feel a little bad about my photography, seeing all the discussions on "GWC" who only shoot on digital, when I only shoot on digital. Then again, it can be a bit of an ego boost to see that a lot of the shots in my photography profile are visually more interesting than those of some of the "pros," even if they aren't as polished-looking. I'm on here because a) it's kind of addictive and b) it IS a good way to network... I only had my profile approved a few days ago and am already in talks with several photographers about doing shoots. Once I get up the nerve, I've also seen several local models I would be very interested in photopgraphing... I mostly do fine-art and don't have a lot of experience shooting models, but I've been increasingly interested in experimenting lately. May 21 06 07:09 pm Link By "I agree on that" I meant the part about making you question yourself, btw. May 21 06 07:10 pm Link Pretty much a waste of time, but still fun. May 21 06 07:12 pm Link Michael Barian wrote: lol...hmmm, a waste of time depending on what you wish to accomplish...its very fun though. May 21 06 07:14 pm Link I joined ModelMahyem to network; so far it has been a very good source of contacts in the photography, modeling, makeup and designing industryâs. As with anything both on and off line, there will some that donât believe in you and to that I will tell you to keep the faith and not let them discourage you from doing what you feel is right. Your time is better spent building on your investment then to defend who you are to anyone. May 21 06 07:16 pm Link As usual, I get good advice from those of you who "know" me. *lol* I have to admit this thread was spawned by a recent convo. It was just the straw that broke the camel's back. There have been soooooo many. . .too many really to count. It's really tough. The saying is so very true: Can't please all the people all of the time. One side says "you're a sellout." Another side says "Don't believe the hype." Another side says "it's all a game. . .a big stupid game." I dunno. I think my time here is so winding down. I'm just so drained. Perhaps I'll take a break for a while. I dunno. May 21 06 07:24 pm Link Jayne Jones wrote: Not to be nosy..but can you be more specific...as to what your issue is?? thanks hun. May 21 06 07:32 pm Link There is the business and the mind games. I don't play the games, I take them apart. That freaks some people out and they tend to want to recoil in horror. This is especially true when I call them on things and ask for justification of words and actions. Most people dealing out simple tricks to get what they want cannot deal when asked for complex explanations. May 21 06 07:33 pm Link I too have to frequently remind myself why I am here. I joined to learn about modeling and specifically how great fashion shots are created. I had hopped to make contact through MM with photogs in order to develop a photographic style that I want to use in promoting a new clothing line. - Which I think I am starting to get a handle on. MM is a good resource for feedback on new ideas and styles too. I just ignore a lot of the stuff that doesn't apply to my interests. It's easy to invest too much time reading and responding to threads. At some point there is diminishing value in participating in these forums. Once I have learned all I need to know about this aspect of the fashion business, then I will also move on. May 21 06 07:44 pm Link Ched wrote: True. I guess I'm just taking things far too personally. But then again. . .we all are human and so it is somewhat difficult not to. May 21 06 07:44 pm Link Jayne Jones wrote: One of my friends recommended this site to me. I was looking for a site in which to network, learn a few things from a different group of people, and get some more shoots under my belt. I've accomplished both, but I have to keep in mind that there will be days when I'm able to network and learn more, and other days where I don't. LOL May 21 06 07:55 pm Link Electra T wrote: Check your box. May 21 06 08:12 pm Link u 2 May 21 06 08:55 pm Link There are 4 type of people on here... Pros, Amatures, Hobbiest and creeps(both male and female)... Considering that, there will be a fair shair of game play along with overly critical individuals that do this for a living...its important and Money pays the rent...Stress creates ill tempers ect... Everybody belongs, and this is supposed to be fun...even if it is the way you make your living. Right?! If not, why are you doing this kind of work in the first place? May 21 06 09:03 pm Link It's a great way to see what others are doing, meet people who you have common ground with share your work, learn and not just about photography! May 21 06 09:06 pm Link I'm here to find models for my work. And once in awhile to post something outrageous and watch the fuss. -Don May 21 06 09:21 pm Link Pure entertainment value! It isn't a site for serious work. May 21 06 09:25 pm Link I have actually spent alot of time looking at the critique section and looking at what other people have to say. Some of the advice i take, some i leave. I have never asked for a critique of my own work, but thats because i know what i lack right now. I like looking at an image i like or dont like and seeing if others agree with me, technically. Also, some people here are damn funny! May 21 06 09:25 pm Link I ignore the various dramas so well that I rarely even know they're happening. I'm here to connect with local models primarily, and MM has been a fantastic tool for that. I also learn from the experienced photographers here. There are quite a few who are inexplicably generous with their time and expertise, and I try to suck their goodness from them. I get useful critiques that help me the next time around. And I like looking at pretty photographs. There are a lot of those here. They inspire me to learn faster, and become better. I share images with thousands and I get to see other photographers work. The models, make-up artist, and myself are all looking for the same result - quality! May 21 06 09:49 pm Link i'm here to make lots of money.. i mean art. May 21 06 09:59 pm Link Doug Lester wrote: On the contraray...I've accomplished much "serious" work with people I've met here, with more to come. Like any resource, you get back what you put in. I likre looking at others works for inspiration s there is some great talent here. May 21 06 10:45 pm Link Melvin Moten Jr wrote: While there are parts of the site that are not 'serious' here, the possibilities are. I haven't quite figured out what the secret ingredient is, but this site does allow for some serious networking, collaborating, meetings of artists and friendships. May 21 06 10:46 pm Link Sometimes I get really disgusted with MM and think about leaving but then someone sends a cool message or makes a great post or needs help with something related to photography and love it. So for what ever reason I guess I am meant to be here and plan to stay. Though I have learned the hard way to never ever point a potential model or new client to my MM port ! It seems everytime I do I get the oh your work is on a porn site feedback! May 22 06 12:48 am Link Terry Breedlove wrote: I would have to say that I refer many of my potential clients to this site that are appropriate. If someone comes to me about a wedding or family portrait then I refer them to my own website. May 22 06 01:36 pm Link Clients I have pointed here are potential nude models and buyers for whatever reason they have real reservations about MM and almost everytime I have to promise not to post their work here. I don't get it maybe becuase it looks commercial and they might be equating that with a pay site. Anyway for new contacts I keep my work on a private page elsewhere and have no troubles.
