I know I am new and not the greatest...yet, but why is it that the decency is not there to at least reply that the interest is not there instead of leaving the topic of a potential shoot out there to dry?  One day I will be like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman going back and saying..Big Mistake...Very big mistake. Thanks for letting me put in my 2 cents of ranting...

I agree. You have to take into account it's models you're dealing with. Some of them are blond, some have fake boobs, some even combined the two. What other behaviour could you expect from the such? lol

I have found that no reply, even to a direct question, (would you conceder working with me) is indeed a reply. You just have to guess what it is.

Example, no reply equals one of the following:

I'm not really serious, just here for kicks.

I think you are creepy.

You're work sucks.

I'm not interested.

I am WAY too good for you!

These are just a few possibilities. You could make a big pin wheel with all the excuses on it. When a model doesn't reply. Just spin the wheel, throw a dart, whatever excuse it hits (may not be the correct one) go with it! At least you will feel better knowing why.

Seriously tho, it does kinda suck

Rick.

For those of you  that don't reply, I offer several paid shoots a year and I never make an offer to the "no responders".

I have seen photogs go off on models when the model says no thanks. I have seen photogs pester a model till the point of breaking, asking them why not.

I think that it is safe to assume that a bob responce from a model means non interest. Offers from photographers are like unsolicited junk mail from credit card companies, do you reply to each of those when you're not interested, or do you assume that they will understand that you're not interested by your lack of reply?

Models are not obligated to respond to unsolicited emails from photographers... Nor is it particularly rude.

In fact if she had replied and said no thanks you would have still posted a complaint about them, it would have just been, why are models so ride when they respond couldn't they just not say anything...

As the old adage goes, if you have nothing good to say then say nothing. Maybe these models are just living by that saying.

How about we flip the script and ask y when you write a photographer about working with them.... it sometimes takes them days to get back to you...and then they get mad when you tell them your booked...and or...

when photographers try to request to be your friend but never ever write you or comment on ur pics or tag your page...as if they want you to play puppy and come to them...whent hey requesed you....thats all sad)

Well it isn't just you dahling.  8 out of 10 of the photographers I contact don't reply to me either.  I'm pretty convinced it's b/c I'm 1-new, 2-my port is sparse (at best), 3-they think I'm probably not willing to pay them (which isn't true at all).  So, I don't sweat it. . .I just keep looking.  There's no shortage of photographers on this site, but even that pales in comparison to the high volume of models here.

You'll have your comeupance yet!

Just remember WHO you are working with. If these models were true professionals they would be represented and charging big $$ just to correspond. Most of the models on these sites are either just starting out, will never make it big, or in it for the fun and a little extra $$.

I agree it's frustrating for them not to respond but even more so if they book and don't show. My experience is that 1 out of 10 respond, 50% of those book and 50% of those that book don't show. So that figures out to 2 to 3 per hundred contacted that you may actually shoot.

I think if they knew how much work was involved they would be more courtious but again, they are young females with other things on their minds.

See I don't believe this at all.  Now you, know I love you girl but don't tell people that
8 out of 10 of the photographers you contact don't write back because  its
not true.  Maybe 2 out of 10 is closer to the number and while you are serious
and professional most and yes thats most of the models here aren't.
Not intrested in working with someone. say something.  No response is bullsh%^.

I've also had models reply weeks later (after finals are over or some life change) asking me if I was still interested.  I'm pretty much always doing shoots so sometimes the answer's "yes".  I don't get offended by no reply or I'd spent way too much energy being offended.

Now, I have had the occasional really rude reply especially when I was just starting out.  I've even had some of those models write to me recently wanting to work for me.  But I don't write back "Ha, ha, the shoe's on the other foot!"... I just don't reply!  I pretty much assume that anybody unprofessional enough to be rude to a photographer will be a pain to work with.  There are also some models I won't work with because they were badmouthing other models in public ("She's so fat!" kind of stuff).

I've put out a few requests for shoots on a few places, sent a few emails, private messages, etc. Got a few replies, alot of no reply. While a "thanks but I'm not interested" would be nice, I understand. They get buried in requests from every yahoo who's got a camera, life issues (not all of them live online like me, LOL), etc.  The courtesy of a reply would be nice, but at this time I don't take it personally.  The only thing I can say is, if anyone contacts me, I'll do my best to reply. But, I'm a businessman firstly, photographer secondly. (some might say it's further back on the list, but thats ok. smile )

Dag nabbit, you're too far from me, and by the time I climb up the pole to call you back, I'm not only TIRED, but I AM booked. LOL

I need to get me one of those "sell you lar" phones. smile

Seriously, though. I guess it works both ways, but sometimes you can actually get caught in the fray. I looked at an email from here the other day, and realized that I hadn't responded to it for some strange reason. I looked at it (for the first time again LOL), then immediately contacted the model.

Hopefully, she's forgiven me, and we can schedule our shoot now! smile

Bottom line: Not everyone is ignoring you when they don't respond, but the chances are that most ARE. If you're really that interested, try them again.

a friend of mine who is on this site as a model was over here a little while ago, and asked if she could use my computer to check her messages.
i didn't read any of them (obviously), but i did see that within the day since she last checked, she had a ton of new/unread "wanna shoot??" messages from photographers.

so... yeah. be patient. don't be surprised if you're not the only one who is interested in shooting someone; they might be deluged with offers (i know, i know, i should have such problems) or just unable to get to everything all at once.

yes, Miss Manners would suggest a polite "thank you but..." message, but it's just not worth getting all bent out of shape over.

My own rant:

when models reply but only with a "is this a paid shoot" and then after I take the time to explain a scenario that can even include possibilities for PAID shooting and then they don't even have the decency to get back and say a polite "no thank you" or "piss off" or anything.

But then again, I've also been guilty of not getting back to people - just not when it's mid conversation.

My note to models:
If people are professionals, why in the world would you want to put yourself in an awkward position with people you may come across in the future in a professional environment?!  I know that if I was hired to do a shoot and the model was one that wasn't respectful and polite, whether on MM or otherwise, I would not be interested in using them and would do what I could to seek others.

Sure the more attractive models will got a lot of nonsense from here - and that must be a challenge.  But they should be able to sift through the GWCs and serious photogs that can offer them something worthwhile, paid or otherwise.  To the degree that people use poor manners, it will likely come back to bite them.

I have come to expect no reply, it is standard operating procedure. I always leave them up as friends but pay no further attention. It is pointless to even bother thinking about it. If they did reply, (and many have) would they follow through to the point of actually scheduling a shoot? And if a shoot is scheduled, how many will even show up? I post some pix here so I can give the link to those I may meet out in the real world. I seem to have much better luck asking someone face to face after we have gotten to know each other. It doesn't matter if they are "models" or not, all it takes to be a "model" is to spend 5 minutes online, you don't even need your own photos!!! None of this is directed at the 2% of MM models who actually do this seriously, you all ROCK!! Not that I can afford to hire you anyway with my house payment!!! Really, it is catch as catch can, just keep your sense of humor and persist in your behaviours.

Have fun, take pictures!!

personally i respond to almost every email/message i get. There only a select few that go right into the trashcan.. those are basically offers for porn.. girl/girl.. boy/girl..yadda yadda. I wont even respond to those but any other offer that isnt porn i usually try to get around to responding. It might take a while since I cant always be on the computer 24/7 but i do try within a reasonable time frame. Sometimes (i dont know why) emails get sent to my spam folder and then i dont end up seeing them until i go to delete the spam from the folder, but in those cases i still respond (even if its a month late) and just let them know what happened. I think its unprofessional to just not answer legit offers.

Yes, exactly what iceblueeyedgirl said.

I'm a very friendly person and not a snob at all, but I feel like even I kindly tell a photographer that I'm not interested, he'll get all offended, think I'm a snob, and maybe even cop an attitude with me.  And then that's only gonna p!$$ me off, and then I'll cop an attitude right back.  LOL.

Or...I feel like if I kindly tell them I'm not interested, they might just keep nagging me by saying "May I ask why not?"  and then start bragging about their work and about how they can create great new images for my portfolio and yada, yada, yada...sometimes even showing their cockiness.

Not every model will reply to your request about shooting, and I know that it sucks having to accept it.  It irritates me too when I e-mail a photog. and don't get a response, but I've learned to live with it.  I figure they're either not interested, they haven't had time to contact me yet, or they are interested but just don't know when it can happen.

As far as a model not e-mailing you back, just remind yourself that the time slot you had available for her could just be used for a different model who WILL e-mail you back with an interest...and there you go...you have an upcoming shoot to look forward to.  smile

If the model doesnt reply?
Well you have your answer right there.
Give it a few days to see if she does bother her butt and if she doesnt AND has been online assume she isnt interested and move on.

Choose to see it as her loss if you will or choose to see it as ignorant or anything else you wish to ...simple fact is if they dont reply AND they have been online since then they are not bothered and dont want to work with you

Move on and find a model who does want to work with you and reply and dont waste time worrying about those who dont.

Or you could send another mail,It is possible that she has simply forgotten to mail you back,or that the mail is lost somewhere ..it can and does happen and if you are that keen to work with them then another mail to give them a poke so to speak isnt going to hurt.
If you STILL hear nothing back I would go with looking elsewhere and forget about them

The whole ball of wax comes down to the "good" models being in a very high demand and they know it.  If a new girl, say 19 years old and 5'8 blonde and fairly attractive makes a new profile with TWO photos on it, she will be emailed the first week probably a hundred emails.  How many photographers are getting that many?

Its just the nature of the beast and it stinks serious when anyone is left hanging.  Sad thing is many of the new models dont know the difference in a good photographer and a point and shoot GWC.  Its all just "Photographers wanting to shoot with me".   Yeah and there is no difference in a 2006 Mercedes and a 1982 Ford Escort either, they both transport people.

Not returning emails will never change, not as long as the models are getting huge amounts of emails coming in.  There is always another photographer around the corner right?

Just curious...Have you REALLY SEEN that? In 3 years I haven't. Mind you, I've seen some lame ass comments on the public boards about stuck up models not wanting to "give it up" that come off just as lame as they are in everyone's face, therefore carrying no credibility, stupid nonsense like that, but I've yet to see personal attacks against a model for choosing not to do nudes, etc.. I ask because, as I said, I've been doing this a while, have for the last two years shot nothing but erotica, and have yet to have a model call me a predator. Forum participants, yes, models no. I look at a model's profile if her look is what we're seeking. If there's ANY indicator that an adult offer will be met with disgust or anger, I won't send one. If her port says, no nudes, don't ask...I don't. If her port is ambiguous or open to the topic, I send a straightforward no nonsense shoot offer. EVERY time, if they're not interested, they'll say something like, thanks for the interest, but I don't... I always send a reply, thanking them for reviewing our port, wish them well and move on. What could I possible hope to achieve by badgering someone I don't even know and haven't met yet trying to talk them out of their clothes over a computer network? Are there REALLY morons out there that do that? I speak with all models on the boards who do all sorts of work, and many that would never shoot our kind of work, and have NEVER been foolish enough to insult them or demean myself with such banter. I hate junk mail too, but I'm able to understand it's purpose, and I'm also quite capable of dismissing it with a toss in the trash without having a heart attack over receiving it.
