Photographers who SAY they don't do TFP, but do...
Many photographers state in their portfolios that they don't do TFP but will in fact do TFP at their discretion. Is anyone bothered by this? Personally, I couldn't care less what photographers choose to say in their profile. I'm especially curious to hear the opinions of those photographers so incensed by "contradictions" in model profiles illustrated in thread below: https://modelmayhem.com/posts.php?thread_id=33497 Mar 07 06 01:16 pm Link Kristin Anne wrote: Kristen, NO TFP. Mar 07 06 01:19 pm Link I do selective charging myself (lol). TFP is currently the norm.. Just a little humor to lighten things up... Mar 07 06 01:21 pm Link I'm just a sucker for a beautiful smile and a honest gig. PLus if the model has ideas that spark my interest... why let a few $$ get in the way of creating art? Mar 07 06 01:25 pm Link sometimes photographers say that so they wont get bombarded with all types of random TFP from people who they i guess otherwise wouldnt work with. maybe theyre doing that to weed away just the random people and then they actually offer it case by case. i've worked with a rack of models who have on their profiles they dont do TFP but will hit me up for TFP. maybe its just to block out the random types Mar 07 06 01:26 pm Link Kristin Anne wrote: I don't think there's anything wrong with this. If you make it seem like you're open to all TFP opportunities, when the "less desirable" contact you and you know you have no need for their look, you have to explain why "I do TFP, just not for you." Mar 07 06 01:26 pm Link I'll do a TFP/cd while testing for upcomming shoots, but the model has to agree to spend half the time working on my stuff, then her/his stuff. IF that's not agreeable to them, then theres no freebie. Mar 07 06 01:26 pm Link It just goes to show that most everything is negotiable. Reminds me of a guy who used to go into Nordstrom's once a year to buy his suites. He would always negotiate a substantially lower price than what was offered. It usually doesn't hurt to just politely ask. Mar 07 06 01:27 pm Link Kristin Anne wrote: Its photographers perogative, Kristin. Some photographers might see a model for their own personal portfolio and forgo the rule of no TFP. There is always two sides to a coin. Models say no nudes but do them, so logically there will be photographers who say no tfp and do them. Mar 07 06 01:27 pm Link R. Olson (RO) wrote: I agree completely. Mar 07 06 01:28 pm Link I have nothing along these lines mentioned, but I'm not here to build anyone's portfolio. I will not do headshots, fashion, swimwear and the such unless I'm getting paid (no one would ever pay my rate, so I keep myself free from the boring stuff). Then on the other hand when it comes to nudes and erotica which I shoot for paysites, it is me who pays the model (clients money though). So in a sense, I do not do TFP either But that's not quite truth. Cause unless it's for a client, I do it TFP. And all of it is soft core porn. Mar 07 06 01:29 pm Link I don't do TFP...but I have a lot of CD's to give away...Shoot, I might as well put images on them...OK who's up for shooting? Mar 07 06 01:30 pm Link basically it means "don't email me I'll email you." kinda like those.. "i wont pose nude so dont ask"....unless I want you to..ill let you know. I only do TFP, and I don't do fashion. What you see [in my profile] is what you get. Mar 07 06 01:40 pm Link Photographers who say no TFP are just trying to weed out the lesser models they don't want to shoot with. Or the models who only want to shoot their idea and not the photographer's idea. The similar is true to models who don't fo nudity or implied nudity yet show it in their portfolio or do it with really good photographers. It is just a way of weeding out the creeps. I only do tfp and I don't do fashion. Hey Melvin... I know a girl in Pittsburgh who owns a whole collection of belly shirts... she'd like to do a shoot with you! Mar 07 06 01:44 pm Link Hey, NO TFP/TFCD means NO TFP! Mar 07 06 01:46 pm Link I agree with Kristin. Don't straight out lie. If you dont want to offer TFP and dont want to get bombarded with requests- then dont. But dont say you dont and then do it. I suppose I could say "only do tfp on a select basis" but what if i want to be the one choosing and not get bombarded with requests? I'd probably have to lie about it to avoid always getting asked. I think people should do it the way it works for them. I know that if a model and i were doing a shoot and she suddenly decided she wanted to get naked for a set of photos but her portfolio said "i don't do nudes, so don't ask!!" , i wouldn't refuse to shoot the photos. Mar 07 06 01:54 pm Link Ian Weintraub wrote: You could also be silent on the issue and not lie. Thats what I do. Mar 07 06 01:57 pm Link I love when model do this also. To me when a model or photograher says no TFP it simply says me that you have enough work and don't need or have the time to do freebies. I do understand the occasional TFP with select models or photographer. It just peeves me when someone say paid work only but the are shooting TFP every weekend and no nudity but have a port full of nudity. Mar 07 06 01:59 pm Link Jose- JoseOnline wrote: Ah... i see! But that's not really being truthful either. You're just avoiding the issue. Well, i don't disagree with you. That sounds like a good approach. Mar 07 06 02:00 pm Link Ian Weintraub wrote: I think its very truthful and not dishonest. A portfolio is to present your best images and present yourself in a good way. You dont have to volunteer every piece of information to be truthful. Truthful wouldnt require my posting my worst images I ever took. Mar 07 06 02:04 pm Link Jose- JoseOnline wrote: No mas ! No mas ! No mas ! Mar 07 06 02:05 pm Link Everyone is being selective - Say they don't but they will, if who they deem to be "the right person" comes along. It's like the girl at the bar saying "I have a boyfriend", until the one she likes steps to her. Then she smiles and says "my name is _____. Thanks, I will have a _____". Mar 07 06 02:28 pm Link To the nitty gritty of it all, the OP's post was a comment on the hypocrisy of the way that models get slammed for saying one thing but doing another and the photographers get a free ride when they do it. I don't think she give's a rat's ass who does or does not pose nude or give tfp. Hypocrisy was the target. I indicate that I rarely do TFP/TFCD anymore. The right model comes along and, well, she becomes that rare instance. No way out of hurting someone's feelings in this biz at sometime or another but there are ways of stating things that are kinder than other ways of stating them.
