Good point. Let me modify... Art is something intended to elicit some emotional response. There has to be some desire on the part of the creator.

Can you intentionally go out to create art?  Or does it just happen when the timing is right?

If you try to define art, you get into a more and more limited scope, which starts to exclude recognized works of art.

It's better to try to define what is not art, but even then, you'll end up sliding a slippery slope.

Even the supreme court took the "out" by saying "I know it when I see it."

So, even if something wasn't INTENDED to elicit an emotion, it could still be "art." and things that are Intended to elcit an emotion or response are often *not* art.

Why does it matter?

For practical purposes, "art" is not shot on assignment or for a client (eg: Fashion).

It's shot on "spec" and bought later on.  The fact someone wants it, without having paid for it first, makes it "art".

At least that's the working definition for the past 30+ years that's paid the bills.

The girl looks dead to me. The guy is creepy looking to me. Makes me think of the creepy homeless men in NYC. Because of those creepy men, I do not ride the trains by myself.

Art, in its broadest meaning, is the expression of creativity or imagination, or both.

Well you could analyze hypothesize theorize and dwell on the meaning of art. You could come up with a bunch of cliché poems or truly inspiring philosophical quotes that describe art. You could go ahead and say that art is subjective and that art is whatever you want it to be. That all boils down to "No one knows"

For the most part art is subjective but there are limits. If your at an art gallery and you wipe a booger on the wall someone is going to come up and say "Oh my God i have to have that." It does not make the booger soiled wall art.

For me I believe the truth lies in this statement.

"You will never understand Art, till first you understand God. I have realized that all forms of art are simply a humans attempt to mimic the creative power of God, for God was, and is the first true artist."

Art is just another word. Do not get to hung up on what art is, just know that you enjoy it and keep creating it. Like God if you try to understand it and spend your whole life studying it but never enjoy it you wasted your life.

I'm no great philosopher, but my guess is that the more time you spend debating what art is, the less likely it is that you are creating it. The more time you spend worrying about whether you're creating art, the more confined your thinking becomes.

For all I know, most of what I create is not art in most peoples' opinion. But the process of creating helps make me more complete and helps quell the desire to create that wells up inside of me. I answer to that beast alone when it comes to "art", and if I'm a mediocre hack, that's fine as long as the beast has been beaten down for another day.

Sure. I like this one:

Between stimulus and response, there is a space
In that space lies our freedom and power to choose our response.
In our response lies our growth and freedom.
