In my country there is a superstition: dreaming somebody from behind symbolize that she or he passed away; but not necessarily she or he is really dead. In this case death is a metaphor for throwing-over and desolation. It could be a metaphor for a lost love, a lost youth or a lost happiness. Your picture is like a dream of (you already said this) of despair.
