what do you regret buying for gear?
Anything? Jun 15 14 06:16 pm Link 580Ex Canon speedlight, I hate it.Gets over heated, then recycle time to fire again is rediculously slow.Used it for a wedding reception and more than half my shots, flash did not fire. I much prefer my studio monolights. Jun 15 14 06:37 pm Link Non IS 75-300 zoom. Jun 15 14 06:41 pm Link waynes world pics wrote: +1 Jun 15 14 06:47 pm Link Canon 5d w battery grip, 16-35 2.8L II, 70-200 2.8L, 17-40 4.0L. Good equipment, I came close to break even when sold. NOT what I want, too large, heavy and conspicuous. Glad it's gone, don't miss any of it. I would add the 135 2.0L except it was so good it almost made me keep the 5d. Jun 15 14 06:59 pm Link Sony FS100 pro video camera. It's a good camera, but I just don't do enough video to justify it. Got it before the D800 came out and had I waited, I could have covered all of my video needs with that. I've loaned it out to someone doing a tv show pitch who has used it more than I have at this point. Jun 15 14 07:09 pm Link A back up D7100. It just doesn't compare to my D800- I really should have bought another 800 instead... Jun 15 14 07:09 pm Link Ever speedlite I've ever bought thzt isn't a Yongnuo. They're so cheap and they do everything I need them to do as I never use TTL. Jun 15 14 07:09 pm Link I regret my low end tripod. It is too flimsy for the older, heavier camera and flash which have become my workhorse system, over my lite weight, entry-level dslr. I won't make that mistake when I purchase my video equipment. Lesson Learned: Sturdier equipment, backed up by good performance reviews is easy enough to find and will allow me more flexibility in my work and be a greater trade-in/resale value or at least last longer. Jun 15 14 07:41 pm Link Nothing at this time. Jun 15 14 07:52 pm Link Dan Howell wrote: I'd put her to good use. Jun 15 14 07:54 pm Link A bunch of filters that I never use. If I had a good circular polarizing filter, I might use that for certain purposes, but I don't like the resultant lowering of light, even in that. Otherwise, nothing that I can think of. I am a little envious of my son's 70-200 L IS II though, I have the previous model, and haven't gotten over the hated idea of spending that much, (or more), money again. -Don EDIT: I might add that I don't agonize about my filters very much - one always spends money, that, in retrospect, was a bad investment - so what ? Shit happens. Jun 15 14 08:05 pm Link Sony F60m flash - Defective design: overheats after about 20 shots spread out over 5 minutes. Shuts down for about 10 minutes thereafter. It's all the more irritating because it's actually a great flash (cobra design, LED light, bounce detection). Jun 15 14 08:10 pm Link Several years ago... a D2x. I didn't need it. Yes, it was a terrific camera, but for the purchase price, I could have been just fine with a replacement D70s and also purchased a D700 when it came out. Instead of ALSO purchasing a D700 and eventually selling the $4500 D2x for $700. That was a little painful. Jun 15 14 08:17 pm Link My first set of studio light, trying to save money, was a full set of Excaliber from SP Systems. I should have spent more money for a better set. They look good and a lot of bang for the buck but they just didn't last. One smoked after year, I now keep a fire extinguisher near by. All 4 had to go to repair for various things but none of the repairs lasted. Finally got a new set of decent lights. Wish never tried to be so thrifty. Jun 15 14 08:26 pm Link An Alien Bees snoot. That's it. I never use it. It's the only photographic gear I've ever regretted buying and that regret is mild. Jun 15 14 08:33 pm Link If printers qualify: Epson 7900 Jun 15 14 08:36 pm Link AlienBees when they came out, expecting something sort of close to Whitelighting quality. Went back to my speedotron packs and sold them off, later bought decent monolights from Elinchrom. Jun 15 14 08:47 pm Link pocket wizards...they work but the price...hmmmmm...maybe my lack of skill...other than that, no regrets on kit other than want more....lol Jun 15 14 08:54 pm Link Minolta MC mount to Canon EOS mount convertor. Blah. Never used it. I also once bought one of those speedlight/ring flash adapters from Photojojo which I never ever used. Jun 15 14 08:54 pm Link Bowens 1500 Bowens 3000 .. still for sale if someone wants them LOL Jun 15 14 08:57 pm Link My cheapo tripod. And my other cheapo tripod And my expensive tripod - that works about as well as the cheapos Jun 15 14 09:12 pm Link Rogue reflectors. Rokinon fisheye lens. Jun 15 14 09:15 pm Link All the gear I bought before December last year. Spent thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars on everything (2 bodies, 3 lenses, a speedlite, Elinchrom strobes, C-stands, all sorts of modifiers. With the exception of a couple of handful of gigs here and there, they were only used to shoot images for my portfolio. Sold everything and bought a $400 body+lens combo and made more money with it. Jun 16 14 12:30 pm Link a ringlight... Jun 16 14 12:36 pm Link I don't regret buying anything. Granted, not everything has worked out as well as I'd have hoped, and I've needed to return or sell things, but I am glad that I took the chance and tried them. I'd rather try something and have it not work out than to simply not try at all. Jun 16 14 12:37 pm Link Cheap lenses. Nikon Kit lenses, Sigma, and Tamron lenses. I wish I would have just bought quality lenses the first time Jun 16 14 01:02 pm Link All cheap tripods that I had to fight/struggle with Fuji P&S 500mm Mirror tele lens My cheap SP studio strobes Wish I had bought better grade when I had the $$$ but lacked any knowledge Jun 16 14 01:09 pm Link 1. The battery grip for D800. it was a good thing that it is a non-Nikon brand. I don't really care about the vertical grip after all. The D800 battery lasts a long time per charge, I also carry a spare battery. 2. a suck ball Lensbaby. Jun 16 14 01:15 pm Link Crappy 120V to 240V transformer from Henry's in Toronto. Plugged my strobes into it and they blew (bang!) somewhere irreparably deep inside the bodies. Bad news. My iPad - for displaying a portable portfolio. Simply didn't get on with it ergonomically. Jun 16 14 04:14 pm Link Ringflash, sold it for 1/3 of what I bought it for. I bought the alien bees one and the plastic slider mount for it broke in no time at all, generally the look was useless for me and the kids/families at the studio used to call it the "purple cheerio light" (purple O after image) Jun 16 14 04:28 pm Link anything cheap.... always replaced it with what i should have gotten all along. Tripods, Calumet lights/AlienBees, any umbrellas. Jun 16 14 08:26 pm Link A 55-200mm lens, totally useless for me.... Jun 16 14 08:45 pm Link Phase One Medium Format camera. Unstable and buggy. Funny thing is the back with a kapture group adapter worked perfectly on the Fuji gx680. Sold the lot. Never used a camera system that was so buggy. Even now they are removing features with firmware updates. For example it's gone from 3 focus points to one focus point. They are so full of shit at Phase One it's ridiculous. You have a stability problem and they blame everything else.. Then a few weeks or months later another firmware upgrade comes out and the notes say improved stability. If the stability is improved... doesn't that man there are and were stability issues? I find it unacceptable that a Pro Camera has "stability Issues" like beta software. What is even worse is that they will come out with a "turd polishing camera update" and then describe it as the camera with the "highest up time" in the industry. Here is another one.... http://forum.phaseone.com/En/viewtopic. … 330348fb13 Can you imagine buying a cemera with bracketing function and then the manufacturer updating the bios and removing this and other functionality... and without mentioning it in the release notes??? http://forum.phaseone.com/En/viewtopic. … acd58bcd99 Jun 16 14 08:58 pm Link One of my worst purchases were tungsten lighting...the heat was just horrible and I lived in Arizona at the time. It was a maternity shoot and we had to break every 5 minutes to let the room cool down. She was a trooper though. Second, I'd have to say the Canon 18-135 lens...just rubbish and was a pain to sell. Third, Canon 580 EX II flash...slow recycle and would heat up quick. Switched to Yongnuo and don't regret the change. Fourth, all of my Canon gear. I now shoot Nikon and enjoy it a bit more. Have a few more Canon items to sell off, but I will in time. Jun 17 14 12:13 am Link Biggest goddamn camera bag I can find some Lowepro monster. Put so much shit in it, I can't even lift it. Expensive too Jun 17 14 12:23 am Link the lonely photographer wrote: Time to hire a muscular assistant. Jun 17 14 01:27 am Link Elinchrom D Lites They have broken down multiple times. Once, the modeling lamp exploded during a shoot. Luckily, the model was unharmed. Time to switch to Einsteins after that. Jun 17 14 07:43 am Link the lonely photographer wrote: haha! Jun 17 14 08:22 am Link The Nikon D600. It's a great camera...but my primary body is a Nikon D3S and the feel in the hands is just so much different. For weddings if I need to switch between one body and another, I'd prefer to have a more consistent feel between the two. Buttons I'm very used to using one way either don't work at all on or work differently on the D600. I blame only myself. As a result, more than 90% of the time I'm shooting with the D3S with the D600 is just there as a "shit happens" option. I should've saved for a second D3S (or D4). Lower price and a pressing need for a backup body kind of forced me to buy it. Now the quick release of the D610, the resale value on a D600 is so low that I might as well just keep it.
