I just received a very warm message from a young lady who told me that she adored my work, and how it would be such an honor to work with me..... And then she fretted that she was not Gothic enough to shoot with me....

What?
Gothic enough? Have I been pigeon holed and defined as a Gothic photographer?

That's it, I'm shooting FHM content from now on.

Gothic is not the first word that pops into my head when I look at your port. (Great work by the way)

Isn't modeling about being able to transform yourself anyway?

I'll be looking for you in FHM wink
Maybe you can shoot my next submission to them!  LOL

Got to love how one gets lumped into only one category as if you can't do anything outside of that.

The naked thing is another rat trap people seem to be blinded by.. Its clear that if you look at my work that I do clothed shoots too... But I suppose if you have about half your work nude, that that means it's all you do.

Smile.

I could say I'm too OLD for you to shoot.

Thus hinting that I want to model for you for one of your extreme art pieces. You know, since I'm goth and do clothéd shoots...

I didn't say I wouldn't shoot with you, what I said was, my comment if I were her would not have been that I wasn't gothic enough but that I wasn't naked enough. I don't think that your port is too gothic, or too naked, or too anything. I am not lumping you with anything. what I meant by that was that I love shooting gothic but I don't do nudes.

sorry that didn't come across the right way

No worries jessalyn, I never hold a persons opinion against them..... But that does not mean I won't challenge you.

But clothed or not goth or not I would love to work with you.

Goth????

*sigh*

Its amazing that people see work that has a "darkside" and imediately label it Goth...

I've had people tell me they love my work but that its too dark....it does bum me out because even though I prefer dark work, I'd love to shoot many different kinds of models....they just can't see themselves beyond the FHM/Maxim stuff....

Your work is just brilliant btw....

Your work definately generally has a dark feel to it, but it's all across the board.. I wouldn't label you as gothic either... smile  But don't go FHM - *grin*  Your work is too amazing as it is to go that direction...

Well, "raven's laughter" sounds gothic, but one would hope she would go by more than just that.

And what is "FMH?"

FHM is for him mag.... it's like maxim, but way better as far as raunchy jokes and better photography.

and anything with "laughter" in it would not be considered gothinic by definition

Ah, I wouldn't fret too much. The term  "Gothic" is overused these days anyway (and this coming from one who's been involved in the "gothic" scene for 20+ years). It's her shortcoming assuming she isn't good enough. I love your work, by the way. Very classy!

Ouch...I'm starting to think Raven's Laughter has lost interest in me...such a pity...since I was in the works of figuring out if it'd be possible to fly out to California to shoot with him...and I decided that it is...oh well...*sniffle sniffle*...I'll be alright...*sniffle*...stop looking at me! *sniffle*

whoever said that is a striaght up moron, artsy or darker images are not a;ways goth and it sucks that your getting pigeon holed like that.  hell im in the "goth" scene and even i tire of being told im too goth for something.  so i know exactly how it feels to be ignored because you get unjustly stereotyped and shoved aside.

Probably a young model that was scared of the darker stuff in your port.

I get that all the time from glamour models scared of my "goofy shots"

"It art damnit.... shut up and stand there just like I posed ya.  You can go back to your bikini modeling when we are done shooting"

She used the wrong words, but I understand what the model meant. Sometimes I look at a photographer's portolio and really enjoy it, but I feel as though I might not be their type if they have a darker/goth/alternative (I hate labels) or whatever you want to call it style. I feel like they might not want to shoot my more maintstream FHM/Glamour/Causual/Fashion/Bikini/whatever it is I do! I don't know how to explain it- it's not that the model feels thats "all you can do", it's just that she feels like her style and yours are different and she's not sure if you would be interested in hers.

I doubt the models issue was how "goth" she is. Your work has a darker feel to it but, I wouldn't consider it "gothic" at all. She may have had an issue with being nude and used that as an excuse since it seems like the majority of your work is nude. It's all very well done by the way! smile

To people not familiar with such genres, dark settings and a hint of dementia can come across as "goth". You can't control how your images will be perceived by others. Just be happy you've got waves of women here literally throwing themselves at you for potential collaboration. Life must be so hard. wink tongue

The model who approached me us an art model who has more nude images in her portfolio then I have in mine, so she wasn't shy about my use of the human form.

I wrote her about her statement, she wrote back right away explaining that her use of the term Gothic was to describe what she felt was a deficacy in her modeling.. Basically that she hadn't approached me previously because she was sure that I would reject her because she wasn't dark enough for my taste in photography.

Why don't people just say what they mean, lol.

Anyways she and I are scheduled to shoot in Nov. So let's see what I can do with a glamour girl.
