Is there a particular reason to why models go by a different name?

are you specifically referring to models who have profiles on websites on the internet that are visible to the public?

Narcissism at it's best.  Who in Hollywood uses their real name?

My name is JOHN BRIGHT of J&X Photography.

My "alias" is Juan Enrique Rivas here on MM because I am hispanic, however John Bright doesn't sound very hispanic, so I'm using my name translated to spanish to maybe help me get more jobs.

Rivas is my mother's maiden name, and in Peru I actually go by John Henry Bright Rivas, so it's not a totally contrived name, it actually is part of my name that I don't use here in the USA.

I'm sure other people have other reasons.  If you were born Getrude Fatasseatsalottacheese I'm sure you might change your name, too!

I know a lot of photographers (Myself included) who use a name other than the one they were born with.

For me it was a marketing decision.
I know others who have done it for the same reason.

It's easier to establish yourself as a brand with a simpler or less common name.

Tons of reasons.  You'll have to ask them what their reasons are.

I like to keep my personal information available on the Internet to a minimum.  I'll share some personal information, including contact info, with people I know, but I won't do so with strangers.  At a minimum, I like to minimize the spam & junk mail I receive (and I receive a lot); further, I just don't like making life easy for identity thieves.

I know a few models who just don't want their family (particularly the older generations) to know that they model.  (Remember -- I make fine art nude photographs.)  They just don't want their grandmother or their boss to know that they pose nude.

Tons of reasons but I think the top three are: protection against stalkers and potentional stalkers. Protection against employers, schools, and others who think because you're a model, there's something wrong with you. The ability to get out if you ever want to without having your name plastered all over the internet for the next five years.

Those are the reasons I hear most often from models.

Simply because out there will be LOTS of people with the same name
The only other option is for numbers after it or some such.
Plus as an Alt model it kind of comes with the territory.

I used to use an alias but then switched to my real name .I don't know if that was a bad idea or not but I don't think I will ever be ashamed of my modeling and my whole family knows I do it any way. But if I was a teacher or some thing I would probably use an alias cause I wouldn't want my students finding nude pics of me and bringing them to school or some thing!!!

I have so many fake names it is now enjoyable for me to use my real one ... in cases where i can be incriminated i still use a fake... which one i use depends an what i am doing... burlesque, is one name , bondage photography is another, so on and so on....
I am a performance artist so this has much to do with the creation of these characters...but i in no way ever confuse the characters i create with my own personal self.

I have noticed some peoples egos being wraped up in their fake name ... this to me is kindof retarded. If some one cannot tell me their name and i have to go around calling them Draconia or something equally contrived , they have no chance of becoming a real friend or even a trusted working cohort. I will be damned if i am going to go running around calling someone mistress either.

My new web site will portray all my fake names as different characters... not unlike Annie Sprinkle did...( whom by the way got hers from a headstone).
My real name wil be credited in the bio as a creator of these characters. I also have alot to do with the photo shoots I have done as far as concept and direction...so  in some instances, that is kind of a set for these characters i have created

Personally I just use my full name in any site that I am on, but I can understand why people would use an alias.  For example, if I decided to do primarily nudes (and not artistic ones at that), I wouldn't want my name to be associated with those.  I am pretty well known in the weight loss community and want to be remembered for my weight loss, not the fact that I posed nude. Just an example of course - I DON'T use an alias.

Also, should I ever return to the rehabilitation counseling field, I wouldn't want clients coming upon any questionable photos...

See, I wish that I'd thought of using an alias. I have a fairly confusing name, and frankly I'm sick and tired of all the photographers I meet calling me Susan Ak-tug. It's pronounced SUZANNE OK-TU it's Turkish, IS IT THAT HARD!?!?!?!?

Okay, mini rant over, but really, I wish that I did, and maybe I should. I never really thought about incriminating photos, and the fact that my name isn't very 'marketable' when I got into the industry.

Is there a way to change your name on these things?

I can't speak for models in particular, but the world wide web can be very invasive and threatening to privacy. If you doubt it, Google your own name. Unless you've taken careful measures to conceal it, not only your name but phone numbers and addresses going back years are available for anyone to view.

I'm amazed how many people put themselves out there for anyone with bad intent to abuse.

Some have said you have something to hide if you don't use your real name. I have nothing to hide, but I do have something to protect: my privacy.

I agree, Tonie was given to me by my first photographer who couldn't pronounce my name correctly! Eventhough I love my birth name, I just feel that Tonie just shines even more when it's Lights, Camera, and Smile! But then again....it IS fun having an alias because, NO ONE KNOWS YOUR NAME! LOL!

Stalkers, yes, potential stalkers yes, employers, yes, schools, yes.....

All of which could find you with the usage of the fabuloso site called: Google.

I have not, nor will I ever use my real name. I like the privacy.

Having an alias is convenient.  My real name is Chess Rockwell.  Occasoinally I model under the name Brock Landers

I selected the name Jay Bowman because it just screams "Pornstar!!" and instant credibility, y'know?

When I used to model, I'd use a shorter version of my name, or use just abbreviations. I think Aliases work to ward off the wierdos because then you're not giving away too much personal info online. However, I think it's a bit much when the alias starts looking like a middle school yahoo e-mail username. Hotchick69, etc. (I don't know anyone by that specific name lol, just pulled it out of the air)

EDIT: For those wondering what the 3rd Floor means, it's because we are actually a group organization for which I am the photographer, and we originally founded ourselves while roommates on the 3rd Floor of an apartment building. :-D

pure marketing reasons...

My legal name is very close to a pop star and no one would ever find me if they tried to look me up by that name.
So I looked at several lists of names and did some reserch and picked one I liked that was easy to remember, easy to say,  easy to spell, and I bought the domain up and the rest is history...

Most of the models I work with have stage names.  It just makes sense to use a stage name in your "public" persona so that you can have a private life as well.  There are some models I've worked with that don't use a stage name (and one that is legally changing her name to her stage name...) but they are by far an exception...
