what was the best deal you ever got on stuff you use for shoots. Mine is a three way tie right now between

1. today getting two 750ws calumet travelites for $150 each

2. a turn of the century hooka pipe for $10

3. and a complete 50's wardrobe for myself, 20 dresses or so worth over $1,000, for $40

now what are your great deal stories?

I'll be back when I find myself a good 4x5 system (monorail view) for under $1,500.
One w/ 2 lenses in boards with Copal shutters and if I'm lucky a couple of film holders.

Wish me luck
:-)

2 K1000's with 5 lenses and cases...  -> Got them free.

Canon AE-1 and 4 lenses.. -> Free also

Was shooting someone's puppies for them to put on Internet for sale... and they handed me a box of "junk" along with cash for shooting the pictures.

In the box.. the cameras and lenses and cases.... not bad for just shooting 11 puppies.

I bought a nice Bogen tripod/head combo on Ebay, for 65 bucks...after watching auctions for a couple of weeks, waiting for the right one that no one had noticed or really bid on. Then the seller suddenly discovered that he had previously sold it, or couldn't find it, or some such nonsense (when he realized that he was losing a good bit of money). He sent my money back with 5 dollars extra...but I am still pissed about that one. I guess that was the best deal I almost got.

Got a few deals here and there with photographic equipment. My biggest and best deal was in another catagorey.

I used to deal in Lionel Railroad Collectibles. Bought a complete layout for $850 and parlayed that into almost $6,000 after selling it off piece by piece.

On another occasion a guy stopped in my studio because I kept a sign in one window that I bought old toy trains. He had a old "military" tin type train in original box with tracks and transfomer he wanted to sell. I didn't deal in that manufacturers models, they were not Lionel. He offered them to me for $40 so I bought them anyway.

The very next issue of Model Toy Trains featured the exact train I had just bought on their cover. The value of the set was listed at almost $500. I had just made a profit of $460 overnight.

Buy can I ever contribute to this one.

Two weeks ago bought an Epson 7500 for $350 Canadian with a print count of only 639. The guy thought the print heads were screwed because of the steaks on his prints. Just needed to run through half a dozen cleaning cycles.

His loss....definitely my gain.

That noise you hear is everyone running to the local pawnshops.

That's not a lens I would use a whole lot, but I would have bought it on principle at that price.  Wow.

The last cameras I bought, my Contax 645 kit and rangefinder were fantastic deals at the time. It's been a couple years. Now that sort of gear is found sometimes for peanuts compared to the peanuts deal I got when I got them.
