critique at risk of death threat?
i get lots of 'hate' mail from the humorless who find my comments in the forums distasteful, but i had yet to get death threats until i posted an honest critique. i don't take the threat seriously, but that does pretty much say what it is that people want out of a critique... the kind of bullshit they've grown used to at sites like this. Owning a camera does not make you a photographer, even if its a real good camera. I can look at a book and say in 5 seconds if this person has an eye or any potential, its so obvious. You have to wonder wtf some people were thinking the day they got the notion they were a photographer. There are a lot good photographers here and a lot learning who have potential and then there are the ones that will never see it, get it, or grow, and those are the artists that are beyond our realm of understanding in their own minds. If I ask for a critique these days it's along the lines of "does this do anything for you" or "does this get across a certain emotion".. And I usually take into account the ports (which I hope represent the tastes) of the person responding.. I find it more valuable to harrass those who's work I like about how they do it. But it's occasionally nice to know your tastes haven't completely left the planet.. Still, it boggles my mind the ones who ask for it, and then argue with it.. (And there's a lot of those.. I wasn't the only one this person sent hate mail to and they were eventually banned (but they're back now, just not posting anymore). And I've never received a death threat.
