Men's Magazines Personal Vent
Ok so heres my question..Why does it seem like that in every Mens magazine contest such as Maxim hometown hotties they pick some of the worst girls as finalists..I don't get it ..I was in the semi finals this year and If I was going to get kept out of the top ten (which I did) I wish it would of been of some deserving hotties..Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder but can we please start looking from the neck up on some of these ?? I know I may catch some slack for this post but please keep in mind I'm not saying that I deserve to be the head of the pack I'm just saying there were alot of girls that were much better, myself included IMHO..I mean they had 100 to pick from...And I see two that seem deserving..whats the deal?! Aug 29 06 02:34 pm Link I know your feelings. Back a few years ago it was something, but know you're seeing girls getting professional looking photos and submitting them. Maybe I'm just biased towards southern girls but from what's been coming out of the other parts....I just don't get it. Jeff Aug 29 06 02:38 pm Link I know exactly what you mean lauren.. someone once told me though, its not really what you look like or what you know.. its WHO you know.. Aug 29 06 02:41 pm Link I don't have the answer for that, but I'd just say don't compete in the contest. Not all men read those magazines or gauge a woman/model by their standards. In fact, I feel a model that doesn't wish to be a home town hottie is an easier model to work with. Itâs like the photographers that say they shoot Maxim style images, but donât do the extra hours of editing, is that really Maxim style? Aug 29 06 02:43 pm Link Maybe some of the finalists spammed websites like myspace.com to obtain votes? Maybe some of the less attractive models got 'sympathy votes', you know... a show of support from other people that didn't really think the model would get many votes at all. Just like "American Idol", the contestants that make it to the next round and go on to win the competition aren't always the best. I do have a gripe that's similar to yours, though. I often wonder how some 'Sports Illustrated" photographers got the gig, because I personally think that half of the photographers on MM shoot better than SI photographers do. Aug 29 06 02:48 pm Link SayCheeZ! wrote: This is a powerfull observation because your correct in fact many of the fashion Aug 29 06 02:58 pm Link Interesting..You know I've never thought of it from a photographers POI but I to can see the talent on this site alone vs some of the other work that is published or has a big name behide it..I've always agreed to the statement of "Who you know" but I still think that it's so unfortunate.. I spoke with FHM once on the phone and they told me personally that they would prefer not to have to fly girls out to shoot with them and since I reside in the wonderful state of Alabama that a flight for sure.. Aug 29 06 03:34 pm Link How about some more models input on this....Or magazine peeps? Aug 29 06 05:15 pm Link Kylie Burke wrote: My dad used to say "It's not who you know; it's who you blow." Aug 29 06 05:32 pm Link You mean how it frustrated me when I'd audition for music videos when I lived in the south and instead of it really being about pretty girls making the rapper look good, it really ended up being a collection of chicks who had sucked off the casting director, video director, producer, artist and his crew, chicks with large asses who looked like they'd been beat with the ugly tree and somebody's cousin? It is who you know. And how many people you can get to vote for you, espcially in something like Hometown Hunnies. I was in a lingerie contest and lost to a dog faced porker who simply pulled a stripper act instead of modeling skills and got everyone she knew to vote a million times a day for her. I wonder how that line is going to sell. Aug 29 06 05:37 pm Link SayCheeZ! wrote: 'Tis true . Aug 29 06 05:42 pm Link hahahaaaaa Melisaa you're awesome, made me crack up. Aug 29 06 06:26 pm Link Well, I don't have much to say about the current Maxim contest (or any previous one for that matter), but I would take exception to any (unintentional, I'm sure) suggestion that the current winner, Tami Donaldson (Maxim Magazine's Hometown Hottie of the Year, 2006) isn't a truely amazingly beautiful girl from the top of her head to bottom of her feet. I've shot Tami for almost four years for beauty, catalog, and glamour clients and I will tell you that once clients meet her (or see her pictures) it's lights out, she books virtually every job she's submitted for. For what it's worth, she is also one of the nicest people I've ever worked with. At least in this instance, while I'm sure there were other wonderfully beautiful and qualified contestants, Maxim made no mistake in selecting Tami Donaldson as their 2006 winner. Aug 29 06 06:47 pm Link I agree with the idea that the OP stated...I'm often surprised with the girls that don't make it...I think they have great bodies, but...we'll, I would call them butterfaces. I trust everyone knows what that means, and if you don't....maybe it's addressed on the newbie forum. I think the hometown hotties, girls chosen for fhm, etc. are pretty, but I do not think that those chosing the winners are looking at a girl's face. ever. D Aug 29 06 06:59 pm Link John Fisher wrote: Make no mistake, she is beautiful. I think she's extremely photogenic and works as a model. I can also see, however, how some people might disagree with her being the winner due to issues such as augmentation, etc. I'm not trying to sink anyone's boat lol, and certainly no disrespect for the model because she is gorgeous, but from the view of a female perspective, that would be one of my first thoughts. In my honest opinion, I also consider it unfair, because then it's a question of money to perform such an operation. The plus side is, however, is that she does have a beautiful face, so it's not like she's one of the 'georgeous bodies with the ugly face' models. So yeah...I guess no one can please everyone. Aug 29 06 08:14 pm Link Tami is a beautiful girl and perhaps an exception...but in all respect to her I actually saw better even in last years contest...However it was my intention to only discuss this year only..everyones point have been well taken ..I'm going with the "who you know " theory or as it was but "who you blow" lol ;-) Aug 30 06 08:45 am Link I AM one of the former magazine peeps... and take it from me - it's gospel - cut deep in the cold, stone hearts of the publishers... editors [and publishers] of this stuff could care less about the "neck up" because it is the "neck down" that sells the copy. You could Photoshop a Schnauzer's head on any of those models and no one would friggen notice. Studio36 Aug 30 06 09:24 am Link I completely understand where you are coming from. I was a semi finalist in Maxim Hometown Hotties also.. some of the women that beat me that particular week were not better looking than me- they might have had better assets but c'mon. I mean I don't think that I am the best looking or even close but I do know that I'm not an ugly duckling either. It just sucks! The same goes for other magazines as well... but I think thats more about who you know. Aug 30 06 09:35 am Link studio36uk wrote: Oh I believe it now...But I don't think my body is half bad either so I'm wondering why they dont just choose best of both worlds :-( grrrrrr IDIOTS LOL Thanks for your response! Aug 30 06 10:36 am Link I blame Bush! Aug 30 06 10:47 am Link LOL know theres a true IDIOT! Aug 30 06 11:06 am Link *now ...What the hell is up with my spelling today..Prob the fact that I'm looking over my shoulder constantly b/c I'm supposed to be working lol :p Aug 30 06 11:07 am Link Lauren F. wrote: The problem with that though is, I pointed out one of the girls that is currently in the Top 10. Though you may feel she is unworthy, apparently a lot of other people believe that she is. I understand where you are coming from though. The Miss USA and Universe pageants, I always think there is someone MUCH MUCH prettier than those that ever win. But I think everyone has already accepted that it's not just looks but many many other factors. Aug 30 06 04:34 pm Link SayCheeZ! wrote: Just because you can have 20 or so pics posted on MM that are nice does not mean that someone is going to pay you tons of money much less invest in you for such a high priced shoot as Sports Illustrated. They go for the PRO's that have built a CONSISTENT body of work that they are well known. Personality too plays a part in this. So to say that 1/2 the photogs on MM are as good as the ones on Sports Illustrated is LUDICROUS!!! Aug 30 06 04:51 pm Link Lauren, You are very beautiful, but I must say, I don't think it is fair to say that the models in the top ten are knowing or blowing anybody. If you did get picked then some other model would say that you are doing the blowing, I don't think that is fair. You can't just assume that just because a girl wins the competition and that you don't think she should have, means that she had any advantage over the other girls. I am not saying that it doesn't happen, but I am saying that you don't know that the girl has done anything unbecoming to get to where she is. Aug 30 06 04:56 pm Link Every model that doen't make the finals or win thinks that they look better then the ones that did. Or dispute the "worthiness" of those that made it in the mag. Apparantly, spamming or not, enough people though they were cute enough to vote for to elevate them to the top of the list. It's like those penis pill spam mails, apparantly even IF they send it out to 1 million people and only 10,000 reply back, that's still 10,000 people that need penis pills that coughed up some dough. Aug 30 06 04:59 pm Link Girl Girl Girl.. I feel your fustration... Like so many have said.. its about who you know. So.. my advice.. look for a photog that has shoot for them before. Other then that, there is nothing any of us can do. Sometimes I even wonder if they look at the bodies as well cuz some of the females on that site have no body and make it up there some how some what.. things that make you go hmmmmmmmm!!! Aug 30 06 05:13 pm Link Cheese with that whine, madam? Aug 30 06 05:17 pm Link SayCheeZ! wrote: I would have to agree with you on all counts. Aug 30 06 05:18 pm Link I keep hearing personality personality..Which is true(or should be true at least) in just about every other aspect of this work and life for that matter..but lets look at what type of contest this is...you submitt photos and I don't know about yours but mine don't talk or breath or tell jokes. Its based off of three photos thats it, thats the contest..plus we've even heard a comment above who has first hand knowledge of this type of work with magazine contest saying that they would care less about the neck up...And as far as pagents, talent is judged and personality is definately involved...personality plays virtually no role in this contest..I wish it did..I'm game :-) Aug 30 06 05:18 pm Link Lauren F. wrote: Well... not that my opinion means anything at all but, if it's any consolation, IMHO your bod's just about perfect and I'd rank you in the uber-hottie category. Sadly, such decisions are left to less deserving souls than myself. Aug 30 06 05:20 pm Link |
