MM Competition: Round 2

This one is fun, but more technical, and the goal is to really get some creative juice going.  I admit that I am going to steal the idea from Justin.  If Terry Richardson can do it, can't you?

Competition 2:  Disposable Camera - hosted by yours truly, supported by a distinguished panel of judges below.

Updated: July 23th

Definitions:
Disposable camera - The disposable or single-use camera is a simple box camera sold with a roll of film installed, meant to be used once.  DSLRs are not disposable cameras because they can be re-used.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Prizes:  Supplied by me.  It will be either:

- Digital Diaries by Natasha Merritt (book cover too hot to post) OR
- Art and Fear by David Bayles for the photographer
https://ec3.images-amazon.com/images/P/0961454733.01._BO2,204,203,200_PIlitb-dp-500-arrow,TopRight,32,-59_AA240_SH20_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
- Karl Blessing would also donate two rolls of medium format film (see details below).
- Karl would also place your winning images on TheBokeh.com for others to view (unless you object, that is!).  It will have a link to either your MM Profile or your personal website.
- The model in the winning image will receive one super hot Yoshimi Designs wifebeater top, provided by my muse Erin.

Shown here by one of my favorite new models Danielle @ TCM (makeup by Dana Bretz).

There are multiple colors and designs, I'll pick one for ya!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Rules:

1.  The image capturing device must be a disposable camera.  Since we are in the digital age, I would also allow the digital disposable camera.
2.  The camera can have flash, but it must be the fixed-lens type.
3.  Only non-photo specific light sources are allowed.  Examples of non-photo specific light sources include desk lamp, worklamp, headlight of a vehicle etc.  The only flash allowed is the on-camera one included with the disposable camera.
4.  Since this is Model Mayhem, it must involve a model.
5.  There is no limit in theme.  Shoot whatever you want.
6.  Images cannot be retouched beyond resizing and scanner correction.  Crop within the camera.
7.  Deadline:  Midnight, August 15th, 2006; two weeks from now (now = July 28th).
8.  Images will be judged on intent, aesthetic, creativity, originality and your ability to create a lot out of very limited means.
9.  Post your images in this thread (or I may open a submission thread) before August 1st.
10.  Scanning help - if you need help scanning the negatives, send me a PM, I will give you my address and scan it  for you.  Make sure you give me plenty of time to do it!

=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Thankfully, we have six great judges who are willing to make the final decision.  They are all accomplished MM members who are well trained and knowledgeable in the Art and whose work are well-respected by the rest of the community.  I want this competition to really mean something.

Distinguished Judges:

- Sean Armenta
- Karl Blessing
- Christopher Bush
- Daguerre
- Marko Cecic-Karuzic
- Marksora

Each image would be given a score from 1-10 (10 being the best) by each judge.  I will then collect the total and announce the winners, hopefully by the end of the week.  No hanging ballots!

Does a D-70 count as disposable?

Do lomo cameras count?

What counts as a disposable?

To Bill Gates, a Nikon D2Xs is disposable.

I think the standard for disposable is that the common practice is to take the camera to a photo lab, and they give you the pictures, but they do not give you the camera back.

Here is one from a Kodak Disposable underwater camera,

Special thanks to my lovely model Susi for providing the scuba tanks so I could sit on the bottom for the duration of the shoot.
Also thank you Acme Markets for donating use of the shopping carts for this project....
and of course a big thank to the owners of Mom's Swim club for going on vacation so I could toss the carts, chairs and the nakid model in the pool.

No, it isn't.  A DSLR can never be a disposable camera because it can be re-used.  It is not who is holding it, it is about what the camera really is.

But to clarify, we use the vernacular "disposable camera" when we mean "single-use camera".  "Disposable" digital cameras are not disposed of, but they are sold on a single-use basis.

Edit: And I see you have that defined in the OP.  Awesome.  Leo's smrt.

I'm excited because yesterday I booked a shoot with a model (a human model), and I had planned to use some disposable cameras.  And then later in the day, you came out with this thread.  Serendipity, baby!

My studio sits in the front of a graveyard full of 100+ year old headstones....
I could bring a little of the cliche contest into this one,

But it's more likely I would suspend the model from the Trusses in the attic.

Mr. Karl Blessing has agreed to be our second judge.  Thanks!

And I am deciding between two books to give away as the final prize.  If anyone feels like chiming in with more prizes, let me know (PM).

If it's the "Digital Diaries" book I may need to bust out a box of disposables and get serious about winning.
That book looks cool.

I'm gona volunteer some rolls of old Kodak Ektachrome 50 Tungsten 120 rolls to the winner (like upto 3 rolls of the stuff) They're expired in 1980, but should still work, and for those who wont use it ( or dont have a 120 camera ), it would make a great novelty of film big_smile lol.

Disposable?  Single use?  Sheesh.  I could NEVER enter this contest.  I need to shoot 1,000 images to stumble on that "diamond in the rough" that I hit on accidentally.  How many disposables would I need for 1,000 images?  smile

This GWC NON-disposable camera will sit this one out and watch.  lol

2.  The camera can have flash, but it must be the fixed-lens type.
3.  No other active lighting equipment is allowed.  Passive equipment is fine (reflector etc.).
4.  Since this is Model Mayhem, it must involve a model.
5.  There is no limit in theme.  Shoot whatever you want.
6.  Images cannot be retouched beyond resizing and scanner correction.
7.  Deadline:  Midnight, August 1st, 2006; three weeks from now.
8.  Images will be judged on aesthetic, creativity, originality and your ability to create a lot out of very limited means.
9.  Post your images in this thread (or I may open a submission thread) before August 1st.

Before people start getting too far on this....
I think you should define and/or loosen up rule 3.
You should allow the photographer the flexability to use light sources other than the sun. If I can sync a flash to a disposable camera it should be allowed.
The way the rules read now I can't work in studio because I can't use studio lights.
This should be a contest about who can get the best image out of a single use camera, period.
If I want to use hot lights it should be allowed, ditto for flash.
Just my Two Cents.

A part of the competition I beleive is testing a photographer's ability to overcome limitations. In its default form a desposible camera really isnt all that limit as its just a lens, and film. Not everyone will have a studio, thus levels the playing ground a little. Though I'll let III clarify his reasons. And the flash I'm sure is the kind thats built in fixed flash, not "syncing" with it.

Very good points.  My intention was to have a challenge on creativity, not technical ability.  If multiple slaved strobes can be used then the only difference on the concept is just the capturing device (basically a fixed lens low quality camera); and this would be an unfair disadvantage to those who have very minimal equipment.  I want it to be low-tech, very low tech.

However, thinking about it, I agree that I should define and loosen the lighting consideration a little bit.  Ok, see the EDITS above.
