A bad or good agency in one person's opinion - is only good for that one person in that time frame, in their situation.

Examples:

They have a personality conflict with the booker.

You don't fit the look clients for that particular agency are after.

The look you have in your book isn't suited for you.

You aren't sync'd into the working habits of the booker.

Your communications with the agency could be better.

And much more. The agency/booker that works well for one model may not work well for another. The photos you have may not be the look that markets you well. And on and on....

I once tested with a model that was being marketed as a young ingenue by the agent, sweet teenish. I decided to go against the grain and shot some darker, slightly sexy head shots that they didn't like, but the model used in her book. Career took off like a rocket and she booked jobs and catalogs like mad from the head shot. They change her look after that.

Some have problems with a laid back booker and when they switch to a more aggressive booker, they got better jobs. Some are have opposite problems and an softer touch works better. One person's bad agency is another's great agency. The major agencies are fine. The bookers, your look and how you work with the booker will vary.

A single model or a series of model's experiences are not an indication of how another model may work with that particular agency. The primary agencies in LA book hundreds of millions in jobs each year. Which ones are bad?

thanks for all of that.  but i think i'm looking for more experience by models rather than photographers (this is why i put it in this forum).   i'm not looking for models that have had "personality conflicts".    i'm looking more for agencies that have bad business practices, misleading or down right illegal.

seems asking for opinions leaves it too open.   but then again, i'm sure they'll be plenty of replies siding with or in fear of agencies.

Maybe most of the models would be more comfortable to PM you on this matter rather than post it out in the clear.

Shirley, you jest. I've worked with Ford & and Wilhelmina when they each owned their own markets and the others after the 80's agency wars. They have been in business over 50 years. It is not in their interest to have "bad" business practices nor do anything "illegal". Eileen Ford had girls living with her and groom them like family when she started. Nancy at Wilhelmina gave me tips and some of the top models in LA to test when I was just a student.

I can understand the un-known and never-heard-of names that you may question, but to put the top agencies who have built the business to what it is now and ask if they are "good" or "bad" on the basis of business practices or legality is a bit much.

It might be a topic many people rather PM about than post but the OP does raise a good question.

I was recently contacted by an agency and I knew a girl represented by them already (lucky me).

I reached out to her to get a personal referral and shockingly she didn't have anything positive to offer.

This girl is VERY hardworking, beautiful, nice resume, and a dancer.

Personal referrals can really be productive when looking to align/sign with a company for an extended period of time. Wouldn't want to get stuck somewhere, for a year or more and waste your time. I especially think this is productive considering how many stories we see in these very forums (even by people in this very thread) about models being stuck with agencies that didn't get them work, go-sees, castings, auditions, etc.

Yes, I know each person is different, different relationships, different models, etc. but in general it's useful information.

Again, people may not want to post here but the OP's question is valid.

thanks for that.

i'd rather hear what the models think.   not what photographers are telling them they should think.

thanks.

2 cents, Kellie? Give him at least 10 cents. (I think he brings slightly more experience to the table than you.)

Do you just want to know about the agencies in LA or those agencies in general, also in other locations?

Lol,  I know the feeling hun!  I have heard that it is a good idea not to flood them with constant submissions could be bad for business.

I'm trying to get my port just the way I like it, I'm almost to the point of saying screw the port, take some polaroids, and let's get it on!!
