I don't mind photog, it's like photo instead of photograph. There's been a magazine called "Photo" for decades.

But for myself I do try to spell everything out. It may not be not fun, but it's educational.

The abbreviations that drive me nuts are "sup, peeps?", "port", "ho" and "yo,yo,yo." To me that's total "iggernance".

Just don't call me the "Photo Guy",lol

We live in a culture that revels in acronyms.  Consider 8 years of medical school only to be referred to as "Doc", or 7 years of college to get your Juris Doctorate Degree in law and be known as the "mouthpiece".

As professional photographers, we have the advantage of letting our work speak for itself.  If our work is good, a number of adjectives will proclaim our greatness.  If it is unacceptable, "photog" might not sound so bad.  Don't focus on the name...focus on the quality of your work and "Professional" will always preceed "photog".

Didn't care for "picture man".  Didn't mind "crazy bastard" until I realized they're right!

An acronym is a word formed from initials, such as "NATO" from the initial letters of "North Atlantic Treaty Organization".  "Doc" is, I think, a colloquialism, while "mouthpiece" may be an euphemism.

meant to be sort of an abbreviation and not really a word at all.

that said, I like it

Hmm.. I happen to use photogs to refer to photographers in general. Probably just the mind trying to be lazy at work. Personally, I wouldn't really mind it if someone referred to me as a photog. As long as it means photographer when they say it.

Take the word "kameko" used to refer to the photographers that chase after cosplayers in Japan. It means, fairly literally, "Camera Kid", but tends to carry extra meaning... ie, some kid chasing you around with a camera. Not okay with that label.

The term Papparazzi(sp?) kinda refers to the same thing with a likewise negative tone to it.

Is there a negative association with the word "Photog/Photogs"? Or is it just a truncated form of photographer thats slowly coming into common usage?

OK, how about "while in the Navy, I was called Shooter by most of my colleagues."  I even wanted to get a personalized license plate when I moved to CA, but someone reminded me that the CHP may not interpret it the same - not to mention LAPD...  LOL!

Not sure of the Cambodian/or Vietnamese spelling.
But the word Yo or same pronounciation is a term the same with our term "cheers".
The same clinking of the glasses to celebrate one's meal, drink, and company is done.

I am still nostalgic for the day that Tyler changed all of the names to GWC and Hawties. I don't remember if he changed the stylist names. The funniest thing...all the good photographers thought it was funny, and all the, er, GWC's thought it was 'unprofessional'.

I know this is changing direction a bit, and probably makes me very traditional, But I also hate the term 'Photo' surely they are pictures, photgraphs or even images, but photo to me means 'snaps' just like you Dad took on summer vacations with his kodak instamatic, when he had a plam growing out of your head.

Interesting.  I feel that way about "pictures".  As in, "I don't take pictures; I make photographs."  (I'm cool with photos.)

I actually missed off being a Photographer on my card, just 'Jobe' and website and my number. I found that after a while they forget what the card is for and either ring me or check out the site. Either way it gives me an in road rather than them seeing the word photographer and just chucking it to one side...

Hate both photog and tog.  Shooter doesn't bother me.  Perhaps because it's a complete word?

Not only it's a complete word, but among those who shoot runway, we call ourself shooters or runway shooter.

We ask "who are you shooting for", when we want to know who the client is.

For male photographer: Sir.
For female photographer: Ma'am.

I came up in journalism, where we try to find short words for everything. Photographer is too damn long for most headlines. Shooter works. Fotog for internal memos. Asshole is often used by those in the know.

Luckily, our photographers have short names, like Bill and Bob, which solves the problem.

If "photog" bothers anybody, they're free to write "rapher" in crayon on the computer screen.
