I ahve a model who is interested in starting her own adult site. Can anyone give me advice on hosting such a site and how to get everything set up as far as traffic, linking to other sites, advertising the site, etc. I have no contacts or experience in this area and would appreciate all the help I can get.

Thanks, that looks like a good place to start. Actually, I was a bit offended until I realized that is an actual website. I initially thought it was a commentary on me even asking about this subject. LOL!!! Thanks again.

Ya adult sites get sticky (Pardon the pun). Most hosting companies wont touch them for fear of tarnishing their rep. Good luck.

I don't want to lock this, because I think that there can be good dialogue. I would just like to state that modelmayhem does not allow networking in the adult industry to occur on this site.

Is he talking about hardcore, which really has no place here or merely a nude, glamour site, which is appropriate? The term "Adult" is subject to a lot of interpretation.

First off, I used to won a website that reviewed adult websites. My day job from 1996-2005 was looking at porn on the internet. My website was called the consumer reports of porn. At a few times I was an advisor to the FTC on fraud in the internet porn business. I watched that industry grow and change until I cashed out. In teh beginning anyone with a kodak dc50, a dialup and a willing girlfriend could make money. In fact it was hard not to make money. People kinda threw money at you. I had friends who posted pics as their own personal fetish and suddenly they were quitting day jobs. But the business has changed. It is flooded with people sure they are going to make it rich by posting a website, sitting back and collecting the checks. It used to be that way. I actually consulted with a company who had a file folder that was titled "checks we dont know why we got" in the AR dept. The wild west boom town days are gone and now its a commodity business. Everyone who makes money does it in volume with thinner and thinner profit margins. The sole website owners are drying up because it is a full time job just managing the traffic. Tell her she will be working for a wage just like any other job and she won't be so gung ho about it. Its a full time job to make it profitable and just barely. Now if her kink involves having nudes of herself on the internet she might as well have a paysite to cover the bandwidth bills, but tell her not to order that Lexus just yet. And there will be plenty of folks who will charge you 5 k to set you up. Ask to talk to a satisfied customer who's seen a return on the investment. the response will be a dial tone.

They are crap for tech support and we had a LOT of downtime when we were on there. I'll PM the OP with some information but gah. ev1. Blech. Also while they allow adult sites they do NOT allow them on their web hosting service (Or did not a year ago). You have to actually rent a server from them for that - which is what they have really crappy customer service for.

I am reminded of the line from "Field of Dreams" which went: If you build it, they will come. Some years back, that was literally how it was. You are also right on target Things have changed. I don't do adult sites, I work with playboy style and implied nude glamour sites. I now own ten single girl sites with two more being shot in the next four weeks. The only way to make money is with extensive marketing and an effective affiliate program. I do fine with ten, I plan to ultimately expand to thirty. Your coments are right on target. This isn't about being adult or not being adult, finding servers or not finding servers, it is about putting together a program that can actually make money. A lot of people put a lot of energy into building a site and then wait for the checks that never come.

It is the definitive message board for webmasters. I wasn't originally gonna comment, but what the heck. OK, pop quiz for the day. Who owns gofuckyourself.com and how did they end up owning it? For those of you who thought they were kidding, you will be surprised at the answer to this question.

I was a lawyer for one of the bigger players in the adult industry in the early 90s, and their in-house counsel reports the same thing. That it is getting harder and harder to make any money, and that the people who are are the ones running highly specialized websites. It's all about which webmaster/affiliate has the best taste.

Thanks to all for thier constructive comments. I am looking further into it and it does seem like a lot of work, but anything worth doing will take some effort to make a successful venture.

I was with them for almost five years and never had a single problem. There isn't a single server company out there that I can think of, that will allow an adult site on shared server for the simple libility sake. It's not hard at all to "accidently" gain access across a shared server and have access to everyone elses files.

We had TONS of downtime, and our server was going down several times a week due to nothing on our end. Not to mention, several hardware failures (no viruses or anything like that). Both of us have business websites and for every minute they are down, we lose money. We would experience hours of downtime at their hands. Yes, you are expected to know how to run a server when you have a dedicated server but when the problems are on THEIR end, I expect good customer service AND technical support. The concept of good customer service is lost on many companies these days. Besides, it's not like I could turn my chair around and kick the server to fix it. Since we've moved to another company for our dedicated servers (ATCI hosting), we've expereienced virtually no downtime. They don't have as fancy a control panel but the level of service we are getting from them FAR outstrips any we got from EV1 (again, rackshack was fine. Our problems started after they became EV1 and not immediately).

I had a dual xeon server and they never got my billing right. I use wiresix.com now and its awesome. server guy installs all my script stuff and my customer service is done no sooner then I ask for it.

Realistically, it will take you 9 months to a year to learn what you have to learn to work in this market without loosing your ass. The people in the biz are hard core capitalists. You pay for knowledge and experience. For every customer, you have a pirate. You need to be an expert in preventing hacking, credit card fraud, password sharing. Do you have any idea how you will process payments? A dollar in revenue usually goes 50 cents to whoever got you the customer, and 10-15 cents goes to the payment processor/billing company. That leaves you 35 to 40 cents. Photography is a lot more fun. Good luck.

Not always.... If you know the reputable companies, you can do much better than that. 50% of total sales to the photographer/model, period! The company retains 50% and pay all cc fees, bandwidth, advertising, and even attorney retainers out of their 50%. And you still retain ownership of the photos posted. The photographer and model then agree on the split of their 50%. Of course, the above isn't the norm, but it is available. Randy
