Continuing with the:  "Let's get it out of our systems" theme which is going on in the fourm.   If you are joining us late, I am trying to ask every possible question about nude modeling that I can think of so we can move onto other topics on the forum.

So here it is; I ask this question:

Photographers are always trying to justify to a model when it is nude or not nude.  To the point, there seem to be all kinds of artificial borderlines set to define when a photo taken of a model with no clothes on isn't really nude.

So, if you take a nude model and completely cover the significan parts with mud, is that a nude photo?

When I have nothing to wear I'll take a trip to the mall wearing my best mud.

I have never seen that before.  I like to learn new things.  Thank you for the suggestion.

When you say "Your best mud," can you make any suggestions on what kinds of mud to wear?

Best mud = Freshly rained on

No rain? Take out the hose.

I wear mudd sometimes but thats a brand of clothes. Lol.

I have a question too: If mud is considered nude then body paint would be nude as well. I call them artistic nudes.

Now do you prefer the rich black dirt, the heavy brown soil or that grey dirt we find in the sun?

Have you tried mixing some of the colorful clays when you use the hose or do you limit yourself to a monotone?

This is good information.  Thank you for participating.

Finally, do you consider this a form of modeling?

I have heard them called painted nudes as well.  I wonder if these would be "mudded nudes?"

I go for the monochromatic look.  Heavy brown soil goes great with my skin tone.

I'd have to see a picture of a model in mud to determine whethere I consider it modeling or not. If she's rolling around in a kiddie pool of mud with her best friend.....then no.

I would not say truly nude. I know many models who would never do nude but will pose unclothed if covered in mud/body paint.

Then how much mud do you need to cross the line between "truly nude" and "not truly nude?"  We are, of course, assuming that the model is truly nude beneath the mud.

If with the mud on, it's still recon sexual organ, then, it's nude.
If the depth of field is minimal, and you can only imagine, but not actually see, it's implied nude yikes

I think I understand.  So if you shoot with a prime lens at F-1.4 and the depth of field is very shallow, the image is non-nude.  But if you go to a wide angle zoom at say F-11, it is definitely nude.

Makes sense to me.

To me is nude. There are no clothes on is nude  and thats it. If it's not clothed  then its obviously has to be nude. I love these new topics. hahaha Lol

Artistic nude
Implied nude
Nude
mud nude
paint nude

They are all nudes why you think the word nude is in there

Any non-sheer object between the model and the camera = not nude!

Good, now at what point on the scale does it become a cardinal sin?

I see you rate camera phones as more nude than porn!

Alan...in my line of work I am faced with a similar question and I have yet to get a consistant answer. I tell potential models...you have to be nude for me to paint you but whether you are nude or not after that is entirely up to you. Some consider paint to be covered, others don't...personally I don't care ...just pose and let's make some art!

To me is not a sin if they choose to do it is on them. But  don't  try to soften it out saying that is not nude.

Not saying that you are Alan I mean  people in general.

Okay we're talking about female models, but, even though I don't shoot men, it would be unfair not to include them in this mud discussion. If a man is covered in mud his important peice may still seem somewhat... umm... how do you say...present?
And what if the man is standing or say...erect? Would he still be considered covered?
And male or female, if the mud is dry and cracking, this would have to considered artistic because its like a mold right?
