As far as I have been able to make out so far the internet ones...... 1. Seem to have gone tattoo mad! 2. Insist on bringing Billy Bob, Uncle Mo or Mom along with them for shoots. 3. Are seriously into leather, whips and tieing themselves up and this is the most frightening of all 4. claim to be "up to date" with their portfolio so are only accepting paid jobs......????!!! Since when can a fashion photographer or models portfolio EVER be "up to date"??? any i missed?>?? Under all this crud however lie some real potential talents however.... and yes before anyone says it i'm tired and off to bed! ;-))

ah "landbased" VS "online models".. the differences are vast and theres very little common ground except for the term model... thier MO's are completely different. they address two distinct different markets and there is very little crosssover.. while i socialize here, i make my living there..

what if you're a freelance model without all of those characteristics whom hasn't signed with an agent yet because they're a bit picky?

Well, a fairly fundamental difference is that Internet "models" target the "photographer" as their market. Good point Nicci... I would think one distinction would be that the catagory you describe, would be more interested in building a strong book, rather than charging misc "photographers". John

whew...no leather for me...i guess i'm safe. And I don't know Billy Bob. Couple tattoos, but not tattoo crazy. I wouldn't have gotten any if I'd have known I'd be trying to model. I guess I'm an internet model anyway...but I'm trying to crossover to the light side. Honestly the internet isn't working to well for me anyway... just wandering around, lost in between....

I always understood that a photographer was mostly just that...a photographer. I never thought(or think) of them as the market....mostly because they are not paying the model. Usuually, unless it is for a tfp/tfcd session(which I believe is another internet modeling term), then the model is paying the photographer for his/her services. Nicci brings up a good point. Some "internet models" are just that for the time being, until they(we) find a good agency that we can work with. Sometimes, the model is not currently in a good market area for "real" modeling, and so looking to the internet is the closest resource. I believe that the reason why models bring "Billy Bob" or whoever as an escort, is for their own safety, as most models never know for sure if the photographer who they are working with through the internet may actually be some sort of serial rapist or mass murderer, etc... As for the models with the piercings, tats, etc...I wouldn't personally know of that, as I hate needles, and I don't even have my ears pierced. I believe it is the models choice what they do with their body, though, but if they are to work with an agency, they should follow guidelines that are laid out by such agency. Most agencies I have sent out to in the past usually do not like piercings other than in girls' womens' ears, and do not like visible tattoos. There are a few models out there on the internet, though, that do not wish to be part of that stereotype, and are actually trying to just use the internet as a promotional tool. I will contact photographers that I may feel I wish to work with, but I do not think of the photographer themself as the modeling market.

lol...yes, I already know I am in the middle of nowhere when it pertains to where the market is. I can't wait to move out of this area, and into one where commercial modeling opportunities are more abundant. I have to travel atleast 4 hours just to get to Atlanta from here, but feel it is worth it if I am able to find modeling work. I need to get my little tushie in gear and start sending photos/stats out to agencies again, and find out about open calls. I have been on a bit of a hiatus for about a year, though, but am getting back into things and am setting up a few photo shoots with some area photographers...and a couple who are traveling to my area as well. I usuually take advantage of where I am at if/when I go on vacation as well. I find out in advance if any photographers will be able to shoot while I am there, and will set something up. Last year, I was in Seattle on vacation, and so I did a shoot while I was there.

No one cares they have one, so won't worry about mine. Some do a great job of hiding them, as can we as models. If needed in a shoot to cover it up it can be done. 2. Agency shoots I go on I know they are checked out and are normally with a large group of people in attendance. Sometimes a rep also meets with me and introduces me to the person(s) I'm working with so no need of an escort. However, online is different and no clue who people are except hope they are as good as references say they are. I have no problem with taking my mom along on a shoot as my chaperone if one of my model friends in unable to travel with me. If someone doesn't like that they don't have to work with me is how I see it. She doesn't get in the way and has no problem staying far enough away to not interfere with what is going on. Only time Iâd say it was an issue was when she had to climb a bunch of boulders haha Was funny tho 3. Don't get that one. I don't do that kind of work but don't see the problem with it. I see there are many magazines that have that type of work posted in it. Work is work and paid work in a magazine is even better 4. Agree. The reason I do tfp's is because a lot of request are for photos no older then 6 weeks and you can't expect to have paid work with the right type of photos to send someone every time. Most paid shoots don't want you posting the work because it's done way in advance before you see it in print. I did a advertisement for a new product that was in Maxim. I never got to see it Some of you guys that have every issue it was for "the egg". It's an mp3 player. I didn't even know what all publications it would be posted in. If you see it Iâd love a copy of it lol ty (I know you read it for the articles and look at the photos for artistic intent j/k )

Oh this one is easy. An agency model will show up and on time for a job. Or else... !!!!! A true webmodel will grace us with her presence four hours later. And not understand why everybody is so mad, because she actually showed up. But that is just my experience. ***That's not to say that models solely on the web don't bust their butt to be professional.*** I just haven't met any.

A few models that don't take their work seriously should not be stated as 'webmodels' do this. Most of the models I know are punctual and well ready for the days events. Most models work their butts off and for the handful that do wrong everyone has to be joined in with that group is just not fair to me. I just have issues with grouping everyone as a whole. I just agree with the part where you state.. I just haven't met any

And not eveyone can be an Agency model-but still love to work as a model. The internet gives everyone a fair shot......and it is sad that a few non=professional acting people ruin it for those who are serious and show-up and work the camera even if they won't be the next "supermodel" due to age, height, look, or even tattoos.

The difference in Ty Simone's Skewed view.... Land Based Models are the Past and Present. Web Based Models are the Future. More and more we are seeing agencies advertise over the web to get models. More and More we see agencies turning to web based models to fill needs. Look at Sony / Maxim (was Maxim or Stuff) Soliciting on the web for a model for EQ II. Some are getting it, others will soon follow. Business runs in patterns. Right now, In order for Ad Agencies to find Models, the go to Model Agencies. They pay extra for the Agency's service. (yes they do! otherwise, the agency does not make any money! if the job gets $100 an hour, the model gets $80 or $85 and the Agency gets the rest.) Now, they are starting to realize they can get the same quality models (maybe - that is of course an arbitrary statement) for 15 - 20% less of the Web. the only thing holding them back is the reliability issue. However, the time will come where sites like OMP (it is already happening there) and MM and others will become talent pools more so than Agencies (at least in the Commercial Print Area. Fashion is a completely different animal all together!) Of Course, I have a Skewed view of the future, or so I have been told..... :-P

Oh yeah, and I'm a "webmodel" but that is just because I haven't gotten in gear to find an agency where I am...mostly because I am in the middle of nowhere right now...but I still make sure that I am on time for a scheduled shoot. I have had one no-show experience, but only due to the fact that my car's transmission went out halfway to the shoot, and I had no other way to travel the extra 150 miles to the shoot. But, like any respectable model or photographer should, I atleast called to explain my dilemma and reschedule.

Posted by Ty Simone: More and more we are seeing agencies advertise over the web to get models. I know they use the net but they are booking the same type of models. Their requirements remain are the same and won't change unless the designers and clients change. For instance, you can go online and view model's books from the major agencies and so can the clients. You can even setup castings and book them. This service has become available thanks to the web. So yes it's part of the future you describe, but they want the same type of girls. The web just makes things easier. Look at the job market. Companies post their openings, people can submit resumes and actually fill out the employment application online. Did it change the type of applicant that they were looking for before? No it didn't, it just made it easier to put the information out there thus you have more applicants applying. By the way, before the web became consumerized, girls sought out photographers and shot with photographers just as the online models do now. They called, they pounded the payment, etc. and they found them. Photographers also found girls to shoot with. While that was going on, you had the agency girls doing their thing. The web has just made everything easier and has increased communication between everyone.

Posted by StaciF: The internet gives everyone a fair shot... Careful with that, if taken to extreme it can be read that internet models don't look the part. It doesn't always hold true but if you were to only source models via the net you'd spend more time (and therefore money) separating wheat from chaff.
Ty Simone: Right now, In order for Ad Agencies to find Models, the go to Model Agencies. They pay extra for the Agency's service. If it really was the case and all clients would save by working via the net was the agency cut then fine. Kind of. In reality that 20-30% or so is usually worth it to simply be able to make 2-3 phone calls and get a decent turnout for a casting. But look around. Models online charge by the lack of clothing based on working with webtographers not by usage for real clients - typically low balling by WAY more than the agency cut for commercial work if you believe the rates quoted. If that continues, or worse, the net becomes a viable way for the majority of clients to find talent then kiss bye bye to the idea of modelling as a career - the sums simply don't add up.

Is there anyone who really believes that compared, Internet models are comparable in quality to agency models... Come on? That doesn't even pass the laugh test... There are definately exceptions, I can readily point to a few, but my experience is that they make up about 1% of the Internet models. Oh.. and I'm referencing major agencies here. There are lots of agencies with different qualification criteria. John

you mean kabob? Not all internet models are that bad...true there are some that are basically just one step up from the millions of cheap porn sites on the web, and there are some that say they are fashion models but clearly only do glamour. There are a few of us out there that are simply using the net as a tool to get seen and also to network with photographers and other models to do photo shoots to help submit to agencies. Some of us are just stuck in the middle of nowhere and are using the net as a resource until we can move to where a good modeling market is, say it be Chicago, New York, L.A., wherever we decide to move to... Yes, there are some models out there who are pretty much just "prostitutes"....then again, ALL models can be classified as such, since we all lend out our body (so to speak) to the general public for a fee.
