I personally take what I do very seriously but I am aware of the fact that not everyone here is on the same boat as me. I would like to know if admin is open to allow members to identify people who have a unprofessional conduct such as not showing up for appointments.

What do the rest of you think about this topic?

I have had several no shows over the years. Not sure this site or others will allow what most might feel as "bashing". I used to post no shows on my profiles on several sites I am on and have had photogs contact me about those models. I am not into bashing but with todays technology, computers, email, cell phones, there really is not an excuse for not showing, just rudeness.

And if this site choose to have a section for photogs to post no shows, then expect a section for models to attack photogs on their behavior, all can be damaging, especially if the statements are false.

I'm all for it.  Outing a flake feels good.

Except....it always becomes a he said/she said (or she said/she said) pissing contest with no clear result.

-Don

P.S.  An idea is to post who you will be working with on your profile, and leave it there.  When no pictures appear maybe other photographers will understand.

Likewise I'm really getting bummed by the whole thing, and most don't call or anything.  3 in the last month!!  Where do I identify them?

I hate seeing people "outed".  It all feels like high school bullshit, and a lot of it turns into slander, which is illegal.

Unfortunately, its all part of the game. When I started more serious photography I posted fliers at the University of Minnesota. While I did get a couple very good models that way, I also had the pleasure of discovering this "no show" concept. I was also contacted by a professional model/actress in Iowa who was planning on moving to Minneapolis (she had heard about me through a local bookstore). We even had a person to person interview before she moved, and I gave her the names of several art schools she could model at. So, I was thinking I had a "pro" to work with and that she would be reliable. Totally not the case' she turned out to be a no-show, and even managed to forget I was the one who gave her school information when a student asked her how she found the school we were taking classes at (she was modeling at a school I was taking painting classes at). So, I was actually rather impressed at just how unprofessional a person could be. And she's still doing art modeling in the area.

So, I was hardly surprised to find this behavior exists on the internet. I think its just a basic part of being an artist/photographer; its simply part of the business (for lack of a better word). And artsists have quite literally always had complaints about no-show models... this is hardly new.

Having said all that, I agree with those who feel we shouldn't post names and such on these people. That only leads to retaliation and he said/she said arguments. I also don't think it really solves anything. I'd reccomend getting referances from a potential model and then checking them. Not that I do this or anything; it just sounds like a damn good idea.

Anyway, just my 2.75 cents worth.

Would the purpose of such a blacklist be to retaliate against someone, or to help others in the “industry"?

I don’t think that it would be prudent for MM to support or encourage its members in any way to make any unsupported negative comments about another member.

Then what we will have here will truly be “mayhem".

flew a thousand miles for a no show model on tuesday, excuse delivered 30 hours late was a little less than convincing, but i will let her name pass, as this now  becomes a regular occurence in 2005, i have lost count of the no-shows, and unused or misappropriated air tickets.

OUCH!! I can deal with an instate no-show, but when you start talking about plane tickets, you BETTER show up or be ready to give me my money back.

I am not interested in "outing" anyone. I am just merely stating the fact that the model/photographer relationship should be like any other business a professional one. If you do not show for your doctor's appointment you will be charged for it! Why is this any different?
If I have to cancel a shoot I usually let the person know 24 hours in advance. Is that so hard to do?

my clients pay in advance...there is a $40 reshedule fee if you no show, then try and reschedule...if you are hot, i might waive it, but she will have to take me to lunch.

When it comes to no shows I understand life happens, but please call and let me know as soon as you can.  If you call and let me know you can't make the shoot --your fine.  Don't call me, I MIGHT give you a second chance.

I would like to know which models are no showing people.  Good idea.

If I see I can't make a shoot then I call the photographer as soon as I know. I have had a photographer not show on me and I have had a few cancel at the last min.

Did Mayhem enact a Professional Clause when we weren't looking?  I'm particularly amused at the boo-hoo-hooing on unprofessional conduct for TFP (Time For Practice), or equally stunned that someone would seek the Internet blindly (without having previous experience working with one or at the very least a pre-meeting for determining acceptance) for client based work.

You've entered the great Model Yahtzee Game...throw the dice in the cup, let 'em fly and hope for adding a great score in the Chance box or place a Zero on the "1" score.

Flakes are the price "WE" pay for free sites like this.

Anybody can get in and there is no obligation to be serious or professional.

The ones who have it, have it.

The ones that don't, flake are eventually ousted by their own mistakes and omissions.

I do not want a blacklist. Models should do the same about photographers with misconduct. This is a two way street afterall. I know a lot of models who thought they were going to an actual photo shoot!

Plus, I am more interested to hear from the admin about this issue and what they think.

I think if a model or photographer flakes you should just pass the info on to others in your area who you know. Just like you would warn a friend about not dating a girl who slapped you for making the move. You would tell those you know....you would not post an ad on craig's list or anything like that. Keep it local.

That's not cool. just because one disses you doesn't mean that person disses the next. People feel as though they don't have to give an explanation...especially if no money is involved. I said it doesn't mean i agree.

Well I have had no shows and I had paying jobs for them.  They had airlinet tickets set and money here in Dallas and never showed up and of course now do reply back to emails.

Why not a rating system? Slightly of an opposite of those tacky "Hot or Not's" ratings. You can rate the model/photographer, after working with them. I wonder if that would be possible.

5 stars professional
0 stars for unsatisfactory experience

Then people will understand what the risk is with hiring a model.

I mean, they do this on Ebay and Amazon. Why not here? Are we softer than consumers or something?

Haven't read this thread yet, so dunno if someone already thought of this.

It's only libel if it's not true.

I don't mind a no-show when I'm contacted, but when it's a no-show without contact?  Yeah, it pisses me off.  I've had a few.  Personally, I think "outing" the behavior could be a good idea.  Okay, it could be a bad idea, too.

It would be nice to have a means to discourage people from cancelling without notice. But any mechanism is open to abuse, and bashing wars. Then someone at MM has to be the judge in such he-said/she-said situations. I dont see an abuse-free way of doing it.

You have to always protect yourself. First there must be a contract and most importantly show up with an escort to any first time shoot. Models should always check the photographer's references before working with them. After all owing a camera does not make anyone a photographer!

As a person that runs my own site, the reason for not allowing the option of giving bad feed back, is because there are people out there that would use it if the models did not want to work with them.

I myself am very tired of these no shows.  Its a waste of money, but most importantly waste of time for everyone else involved in the shoot.

I guess we all should come up with a better screening method. I am hoping there will be some kind of rating system in place to monitor unprofessionalism for both models and photographers. I am sure models also have their own concerns in regards to having bad experiences. This is not just about photographers attacking models.
