January 30, 2012 11:44am You've represented the myth well. The Black male was once "Black gold" for the slave traders. This Midas appears to have become a victin of his own gift: it's a beautiful image, but also austere and cold. In alchemy, the turning of Blackness into Gold (often shown visually in manuscripts as the transmutation of the imperfect Black male) was good. Your image suggests a different mythology, the gold dehumanizes the male body, takes away from the fact that the Black male body is intrinsically good and beautiful. It's a deep and philosophical image with many readings. Superb!
