I wonder what would happen though if you pushed the connection between the flag background and the American Eagle underwear shielding his manhood. Perhaps doing it in BW or sepia to suggest the past combined with some Andrzej Dragan/high pass detail to suggest the present--together I think the 2 would link this photo to Gordon Parks' "American Gothic" portrait of Mrs. Ella Watson with her broom in front of the flag. Perhaps suggesting this all-American as the heir to Mrs. Watson and to America's troubled racial present.
