Why do one in five model profiles on this site have that sentence in the bio?

If you say that about yourself, it doesn't mean anything!

If an expert says you're "up and coming," that's great, but if you say it yourself you just look vain and delusional.

The phrase "up and coming" makes my stomach turn.

That goes for models or anyone else creatively involved in making photos...

I have 'aspiring' in my bio.  Doesn't 'up and coming' usually describe an individual who is quickly making a name for him/herself in the industry?  Hhmmp.  Probably not the best thing to say unless you have the proof to back it up.

On the other hand, if you don't believe you're an up and comer, you never will be. People aren't going to drag you towards success against your will...

Your own perceptions are 9/10 of reality. And modeling is all about vanity.

95% of the models on here aren't working models at all.

so if they don't say they are up and coming, well....it doesn't leave them with much to say.

the same goes for most of the photographers, mua's, and stylists too.

i suppose we all start somewhere...

I am vain and delusional. *HeHe*
Yet, I think calling yourself "up and coming" is pretty cheesy.

It's essential to have a goal - and a plan to achieve that goal - in any business endeavor.

Repeatedly, I'll ask models "what would you like to add to your portfolio?" Repeatedly I'll get vague unspecific answers like 'edgy' and 'unique' images. (It reminds me of the saying "If you don't have a destination, any road will do.")

Believe in yourself as a model, and also know what you want to achieve as well. Knowing what images will help you achieve your style is helpful in reaching your goal.

if 98% of your modeling income is shiny cd's you should simply title yourself, "an up and coming cd collector."

Thanks. There are still a lot of delusional people running around here barking at each other though. smile I wouldn't personally use the term up and coming unless it was in reference to a raging erection.

Dude, whatever. If you're working at it, and you haven't "made it", then you're up-and-coming. It's an overused, cliche and cheesy phrase, but big deal.

On the MM forums, it's always, "90-odd% of the models here aren't real models", in the San Francisco market, people say, "She's never going to get anywhere with a boutique agency," or "She'd never make it in New York." In New York it's, "She'll never walk for a couture designer," ad nauseum.

This is a free networking site for anyone. Of course there are "models" on here that are 5'2" or whatever and live in Bofunk, USA. Until someone figures out a way to entice people into a super-special secret exclusive internet fashion industry club, there's going to be every mo-fo who has a camera phone in on the fun.

So. 5'2" camera phone girl is up-and-coming as much as the girl who just got her first agency contract is up-and-coming. The only models that are not up-and-coming are those who are fashion household names.

The retardedness of the phrase has nothing to do with it's applicable accuracy.

Done.

S'okay.  While it may not speak volumes to agency scouts (and we know MM is swimming with them) it says something entirely different to porn producers and GWC's alike..

Why use mundane terms?  Why not say your star is still ascending or your about to go above the radar?  There are so many better ways to say that your goal hasn't yet been reached than to use "up and coming".

I don't really care who you are, so long as you're honest about your abilities.
