Unexpected, funny, and awkward moments are common during photoshoots, ranging from animal antics like a farting horse, to mortifying mistakes like shooting an entire session without film, leaving the SD card in the computer, or accidentally falling while setting up a shot.

What are some funny and relatable moments that have happened during your photoshoots?

I was with 2 other photographers with nude model in a small state park out west that was hilly with lots of trees and nice rock formations decades ago.  We had our model posing by one of the rock formations when a park ranger happened upon us.  He asked if that tan van parked nearby was ours.  It was parked in a campsite which required a fee.   It had to be moved.  We said we moving to a new location in 10 minutes and would move the van to the free parking area.  He said fine and commented favorably on the location we chose and model's pose.  And walked away.

First boudoir shoot I did a few years ago was with a friend I had met on a fetish lifestyle site. She was an exhibitionist and very comfortable in the camera. We did boudoir and she wanted content for her OF account. Super fun to work with.

One pose was her nude on the bed in a hogtie harness which was an X shaped strap with D-rings on the ends and her ankles and wrists were cuffed to the harness. First in front, then we moved them to the rear for some shots. I asked if she wanted to lie face down to give a different submissive perspective. I moved to start setting my camera down to help guide her to the bed by holding her shoulders from underneath in the front and easing her down on the bed. As I looked up she puffed her cheeks like a chipmunk and held her breath like she was jumping into a pool. She fell downward on the bed then blew the hair out of her face with the breath she held in. I immediately started laughing. She was super fun to work with. We did one more shoot with a male model after that before I moved away.

Too many to count, but pic #6 (Sweater Dress) wasn't supposed to happen. The model and I, whom I was dating at the time, had just finished up some street shots downtown after 10PM when we were walking back to the car. Two guys behind us started making lewd comments. I gave her the keys and told her to make a run for the car and get ready for me to dive through the passenger window. So she took off, I extended my useless plastic tripod, ready to go to war, and it turned out that one of the guys was the barback for the club in which I parked (weekday, they were closed).  Needless to say, we had a good laugh upon recognition, he apologized, and let me into the club to get some shots in.

Hence, Sweater Dress.

I work out of a 200 year old church building that is generally somewhat creepy. (in an awesome way)

Early on in my MM days I coordinated with a traveling model to stop by on her tour.
It still makes me laugh that she came to my door, looked the place over, and said....
"Hi, nice to meet you. Are you a cult leader?"

I have so many weird ones I can't even count. I was just telling a friend about one this morning that I'll relay here though.

It was pre-covid. I was doing a shoot for a clothing line of a client. She hired the model who she was convinced was professional. OK, no problem. I'm in the studio with the client, a makup artist, the studio owner, and the model is nowhere to be seen.

20 minutes after call time, she comes storming into the studio and apologizes for being late. She runs right over to the makeup counter, and right in front of everyone, pulls out a small container and dumps cocaine on the table and starts doing lines before anyone could even say a word. When she was done, she wiped her nose and said, "OK, I'm good to go now. When do we start shooting? I have a date tonight?"

How selfish of her.

I do remember someone there, I think the studio owner, saying something to that effect too.

I have SOOOOOO many. It is seriously hard to remember them all.

I don't know why this popped out to me but I was in the Delaware Water Gap posing in a waterfall with a photographer that was using a TLR so I knew there were 12 shots. I could not hear his shutter (being literally in the falls) but I could see a group of college students (all men) coming over the ridge to watch the waterfall. I REALLY hate it when people watch me pose. I can't do my job properly. Unless it is something related to like an MUA or designer in a studio, that's different. Normally in situations like that, if someone (usually a hiker or runner, comes upon me they apologize and scurry off. This time all of those guys were staring at me. I literally yelled at them; "THIS IS MY JOB. CAN YOU GO SOMEWHERE ELSE, LIKE A MUSEUM?"
They had this "oh shit" look on their face and ran off. 2 minutes later, all 12 shots were done and we moved on.

It’s said that the proof is in the pudding. Or in your story it’s in the photograph. It’s uncanny how quickly a model posing for their photographer even in out-of-the-way locations can quickly attract the unwanted attention of people. I imagine the students must have the vision of you standing under that waterfall in your birthday suit indelibly imprinted on their memory. What a tale they have to tell. These days the proof would be in their camera phones.

My story is similar to Model Sarah's. As it is also about having people unexpectedly gate crash your photoshoot. One model I worked with had a team of drunken disruptive footballers and on a different occasion a squad of polite travelling army soldiers park their trucks and quietly sit around watching us (i.e. the model) while eating their breakfast.

In this story I was in the process of shooting the cover for a Spring Festival lift out in the local newspaper. Everything was going to plan when a camera wielding elderly gentleman stood watching us for a time. When I stopped to change lenses he approached me to politely ask if he could join in and take a few pictures. I said it was okay by me but he must first obtain the model's permission.

Having obtained the necessary permissions, he then just up and walked off, leaving us nonplused. So we continued on with our shoot and were in the process of calling it a day, when a tour bus pulled up near by and out filed the gentleman followed by a bus load of his fellow camera clubbers on tour.

Luckily the model agreed to carry on modelling while I packed my gear and placed it into to our motor vehicle.

All the camera clubbers were delightful and were happy to simply carrying on shooting the model picking a basket of Azaleas which was the set-up from where I had finished up.

The model and I later joked about how many different versions and various angles there must be of our Spring Festival cover there must be.

I can think of a few

During a Fashion Shoot once I had a Model ask me if She could keep the dress if she threw up on it

Early in my time as a Runway Photographer I was shooting back stage and a Chinese Model wearing something interesting caught my eye so I asked her if I could take a few shots of her . She agreed and I asked her to give me a “ Sultry “ look. Her angry response was. “ What You call me ?”

Did a nude shoot with another Chinese Fashion Model at somewhat isolated part of our clothing optional beach ( where photography is discouraged out of respect for others attending the beach ) As luck would have it no sooner had we started shooting 2 Male Park Rangers approached us… I asked them if we were busted and the response was No - they were just interested in watching.. That sort f killed the vibe of the shoot

Did a fashion shoot with a Model at our Art Gallery once. ( The Art Gallery is across from a major Hotel ) Suddenly a Group of Japanese Tourists exited the hotel , approach us and offer $ to photograph what we are doing. I told them “ No - we do that in your country but you don’t do that in ours “ lol

Oh and then there was the time I was doing a topless shoot with a Model in one of our local parks ( which is legal where I live )  Some Guy who was passing by took an interest in watching what was going on - so I told the MUA who was with us - that it was her job to block his view of the Model… I think the Guy ended up getting somewhat frustrated.
