AI only "lacks soul" when people are told its AI
Anyone ever notice that people only invalidate how good AI is when they are told to evaluate whether something is AI at all?
I think there are enough examples now where the general understanding is that its not possible to tell while being entertained by generative AI models, videos and songs. But I also know there are a lot of people completely out of the loop, especially if you've been in a pattern for a few years. Lately I'm seeing social media profiles that are mixed content, where maybe 1/3rd of the content is AI generated and the other older videos, just like the disinformation campaigns from the last decade where the disinformation blended in to real information. People engage with it like its all real. Older people that are avoiding AI can't be convinced that their new favorite profile is AI because of the non-AI videos. Many don't care. People are entertained How is it going for any AI assisted creators? for consumers are there any series you've started to like? Any artists or even spicy content you like? Oct 21 25 05:13 am Link There are many good uses for ai. Bad video and AI models are not in that category.
I think FB,IG and similar platforms need to require AI models and people must be identified as such. Oct 24 25 08:30 am Link LnN Studio wrote: I would suggest that it's not in Facebook / Instagram's interest to "out" AI models or AI generated content.
Oct 24 25 11:13 am Link As a Fashion Photographer who transitioned into AI 2.5 years ago I feel that AI needs about as much " soul " as a fashion model walking down the runway with a blank look on her face or another model posed in a magazine ad offering the same vacant look ... I understand that the primary purpose of Fashion Imaging is to sell clothes and anything else is secondary
But i have enjoyed doing fashion photography for over 20 years ( mainly due to the Social Aspect of it ) and will continue doing it as a hobby I think though that photography will continue along fine in other areas where the real soul needs to be captured ie weddings, family , babies and children , pets , ,events etc ( all the boring stuff lol ) I started my AI journey at the suggestion of a skilled Designer/ Photographer friend who found AI to offer a better representation of his fashion vision . We had been friends in the 2000s but he went to the Middle East - to Design for one of the Royal Families for a decade and upon his return he decided to restart his business here using AI .. He is a Couture Wedding Designer who finds it much easier to use AI to show his clients what he is capable of making than actually make the prototype of the garment to show them , So his AI reflects both his vision of the garment ( and the context ) but also his ability to construct it accurately I am no Designer but once i started using AI i became hooked and would will say that I now spend 90 per cent of my creative time and energy doing AI and about 10 per cent doing photography I have become very good at AI to the point that I was ranked in the top tier of a FB AI Group of 300k users that i belonged to .Early on ( and in response to that horrid red portrait of King Charles that was unveiled ) I created an Image of Princess Diana that generated 56k likes ( which was a record for the group at that time ) And of course as with anything popular - others tried to emulate or even make a image of the late Princess than I had . The most successful competitor was able to get 30 likes on his image ... Thats when I realized that there were levels of imagination , vision , style , technique and skill involved in AI ... I am not suggesting that it is anywhere near as challenging as photography - but there are levels to it Commercially with my AI I have not done well so far . In the Fall of 2023 I approached one of my Citys top Fashion Designers ( at a Fashion Event ) and asked her if she had ever considered using AI for her campaigns and ads . She didnt even know what AI was at that point so i had to provide her with a basic education regarding the matter . Over the course of 2024 we talked here and there about it and last Nov she approached me to ask if I could salvage her Spring Campaign with AI . Her team in China had photographed her whole line of garments and accessories ( 180 photos ) using only one fairly average looking Chinese Model . Previewing the Campaign I realized 2 things ...One Model could not carry the whole campaign and some of the photography was poor . So I proposed that we use AI to create 3 distinct looking Models ( 2 Caucasion plus the original Chinese Model ) and try and fix the badly shot photos with similar looking AI Images . She agreed( by email ) and told me that she would go through the campaign and choose the first 30 images to be fixed But she never followed through with providing those images . I just assumed that she had backed off because there is still a lot of controversy in the community about AI in Fashion . But I saw the Designer last week at our Fashion Week and asked her what had happened ? She apologized profusely to me for not letting me know - but she had found a Chinese AI Image Creator who had done the work cheaper ( I was only charging $15 per image ) so she went with him .... So when i returned home that night I checked her website and it was filled with this other persons AI ( but they were look book style images and not salvaged images from her campaign ) Initally i felt quite bad about what had happened to me . .I suspended the rebuilding of my website and took all my Images down ( except 1 short video ) from my IG account @AIFMW But i have since rethought about the AI thing - and have decided to take it in a new direction Anyway the attached image was created on the second day of learning AI , and having created a series of similar images - I was hooked
The inspiration for this image comes from a couple of real life Fashion Models i know - who have walked in Milan and both took the early morning train down to Rome so they could pose in front of this Fountain Oct 27 25 07:24 pm Link For another perspective, that of thwarting the training of AI-engines on our real photography and artwork, please see my related recent post in the photography forum. the subject, and may well be right, but it seems that if any scraping is still going on, or continues into the future in some form, then Nightshade can gradually make any additional training unreliable, and destructive of the database. Oct 29 25 11:57 am Link Here's some AI implementation that I can get behind:
https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-indus … violations Oct 30 25 01:10 pm Link Some of the AI images are pretty damned good. The issue of the images "lacking soul" is in many cases the fault of the person writing the prompt.
Nuance matters. Oct 31 25 11:47 am Link I think it lacks a soul without anyone without anyone having to tell me it was made by thieves. Even good AI looks fake. But I guess fake is in. People are so used to seeing Instagram Face that even AI look correct to them. The common man scrolling quickly on their phone can't tell. Even if they do I don't think they really care. It is good picture that catches their interest briefly enough to earn a like.
Good AI creations are designed to farm engagement. Research what people respond to and recreate it on massive scale. To make sure it stands out from all the slop have an actual artist or photographer doing the prompts. You still need someone with an eye for art to have a hand in creating AI art. Who needs photographers? Who needs models? Who needs stylist? Who needs locations? All you need are the hacks. Nov 01 25 11:41 pm Link My question is
Do You need Soul to sell Fashion - because that is the direction i have taken with my AI ? Photography remains a good hobby though Nov 05 25 08:11 pm Link For me, using AI is acceptable as long as the final results still resemble the original subjects at least 85% accurate. Remember, you can use AI to "enhance" non-human things too. And if a house doesn't look like it actually does anymore after the AI sorcery does its magic, then it's just all make believe. But when it comes to models, it's probably more respectable as an AI artist or photographer to keep your models looking as accurate as possible. The only thing is now they are tack sharp and not a blurry mess anymore.
