Some of you seam to think that being rude solves the problem by making the OP's feel too embarrassed to do it again, so how's that working for you? You say that it works yet you still have a huge problem in your eyes. Why not try to avoid the problem, hell post a thread in the forum about how it's hated when people ask stupid already answered questions. I don't care, but just complaining is pointless. They are children, they are prone to make mistakes and make decisions without thought. As you mature into an adult you are supposed to learn from your time as a child and no longer DO childish things. Hence when you do something stupid as an ADULT, there is nothing rude about someone TELLING you what you did was stupid. If you have a problem with researching your questions and problems, you're going to have a rough road ahead of you in general. I find that although they're similar each forum takes on a different life, so it's still interesting to me and if it's not interesting I don't post. I agree with you that it's nice of you to post so that people get someone's opinion that is valid, and I'm sorry that you feel obligated to do so but I think perhaps we could do more, not that we should, but for your own convenience it may help. It may not too, I don't know but no one else seams to want to try anything. Dec 13 06 05:21 pm Link little apple blossom wrote: Ransom J wrote: Incredible. Dec 13 06 06:14 pm Link Ransom J wrote: Fourthed.... Yoohoo, Tyler!!! Dec 13 06 06:36 pm Link My favorite was a video post (different site). This guy plugged a microphone into a video camera and couldn't figure out why the sound came out only one side. I told him to read the manual. Did he have no common sense to figure that one out? Should I have to explain the issues of using a microphone (mono, one channel) into a stereo (two channel) input? Or have him read the manual, which would have told him. Either process would have saved him and me some time. He would also have learned a tool to figure out other problems - which would even help him loads more. Like the question we had about aperature (f-stop, depth of field). We are happy to help out others. But to have to cover the basics of photography or which are the "primary" model agencies in LA, NY every week gets old. Dec 13 06 06:44 pm Link Recently a model in Houston expressed interest in shooting. She then asked me how far Edinburg was from her. Couldn't she have used Map quest or Yahoo travel to find out? Some people ask questions without looking into things first. My wife and I (most conservative women in the U.S.) have this debate all the time. She feels that students at the high school level should have certain basic skills and its not up to the teachers to teach them those skills they don't have. Me I feel if there are students that don't know then give them the help they need. This of course isn't quite the same as we assume most of the people responding to threads and over 18 should be able to research things for themselves and not ask the same questions covered a hundred times already. My wife is from the school of take a moment to look it up for yourself. I'm from the school, yeah thats a good ideal but some people lack certain skills and may not quite know where to look or how. She's probably right of course. I recall a few years ago when someone told me to link one of my images to a message board. I was like ??? They were cool and explained to right click on the image to find out its URL via properties. Then highlight it copy and then paste it into the post image box on the board. I said man, I feel kinda dumb asking some basic stuff. My friend said hey, if you don't know you don't know. So ask. Dec 13 06 07:08 pm Link I've had the pleasure of meeting Tony's wife. I agree with her on this issue (and a lot more). Dec 13 06 07:21 pm Link Here's a family example: One of my daughters was asked to plant some flowers and we would pay her. She was 17 at the time. We left to buy more plants and when we came back the plants were planted and they looked great. My wife asked where were the plastic pots they came in. Yep you guessed it she had put them into the dirt intact with the pots. We looked at each other and cracked up and I asked her (my daughter) how did she expect the plants to grow. She gave us that look that dogs sometimes do when they are confused. Then the light went on in her always listing to Bet brain. My point??? Well, people don't always think. They should use their common sense and my daughter has gotten better in some ways (she's in her second year of of a overpriced college) but quite often they don't. Dec 13 06 07:45 pm Link I once repaired an autoclave (pressure vessel used to sterilize instruments and glassware). The day after I returned it, I got a call that it still wasn't working. They brought it back to my area and I spent 2 days running every possible configuration the unit could run in with absolutely no failures. I delivered it back to the lab, showed the professor that it was working and left. The very next day I was informed by the head of the department that the autoclave had failed again and that she wanted to know why my repairs wouldn't last. I told the student that had reported the failure to turn the unit on and I would be right over. I then told the the department head to please meet with me in that lab in 20 minutes. By the time the she and I got to the lab, the water in the chamber had boiled and the system was now pressurized and was working fine. I then told her that it was not my job to teach students how to read and showed her the printed instructions that indicated that the sterilization time began after the system was at the desired pressure. I slipped away while the professor and students got their lecture. It is important to read and understand what you have read. Relying on an authority figure does not mean you will have the correct answer. Ultimately, you must take it upon yourself to learn where to find your answers and be ready for the consequence. Dec 13 06 11:30 pm Link R.I.P. Lest those who make light of these issues, or blithely say something like "If you don't like it, you don't have to respond" . . . . As I mentioned before, stupid accumulates. The forces that might keep stupid from accumulating fall victim to the stupidity as well as the lack of understanding and support from those who say they have the best interests of the forum at heart. Earlier today there were 20 mods on MM. Now there are 18. Stupid got to two of them. Today one of MM's most valuable members left in disgust at stupid. Bob Randall is a member no more. He is the latest in a string of valuable losses. And others are close to it. Stupid accumulates. You can't make it stop by ignoring it, or by feeding it. They don't understand that the moderators let ANYBODY on this site. And that obviously everyone is not going to be informed on EVERYTHING there is to know about the industry and how it works. It almost seems like it's one of those "buyer beware" or "beware of dogs" or "no tresspasing" for newbies situations. You open the gate, you Better be prepared for what's inside. Stop answering them.. Dec 14 06 04:28 pm Link If only things in life were simple. I always find things a little more complicated. I totally agree with the premise that a rudimentary search should be done before posting a question. It may be laziness but arenât we all. Ever call 411? Lets face it, how many of you go to the library to get your information. I like everybody else I Googles it. Even though the information is probably not the most reliable. Why? It is more convenient. People post these questions these questions with the same reasoning. I am not arguing for the stupidity of not using the FAQ but many of these people do not even know what it means. There are lots of other reasons to consider. I try to use the search function. To tell the truth, the functionality has a lot to be desired. If I have a particularly large escort coming over and need information on size and power requirements of a woodchipper, a search would yield two threads. Yet much of this information is embedded in the escort thread. Do a search on escorts and it will be a while before you find any woodchipper information. Tick, tock, home Depot is closing. Then you have a poster that tries to follow the rules, finds an old thread, reads it, posts a follow-up inquire. The thread is bought to life. Most people do not read the date and replies to the OP instead of the poster. You may also consider, information changes, an agency by that name may now really exist, new members join and may have valuable new insights to the escort question (OK Iâm pushing it a bit). I know Mr. Randall added much to many photographic questions ask before. Speaking of Bob, I am sorry to see him leave along theoldguy and many others. I will really miss him. Personally I do not think the redundant questions are to blame, annoying as they are. I started missing Bob several months ago when he started partaking in the many inane mindless threads that populates this board. If we are looking for solutions, maybe we should start there. You really did not have to be a rocket scientist to have predicted the direction the Pit would end up.
