I just picked up the special edition DVD of this 1961 film which at the time of it's release was regarded by some as an affront to decency and morality, and is today best known for exposing the British critical establishment as easily led, intellectually lightweight, thin-skinned and irrational, thereby presaging the decline of a film industry which by the mid-1970s could only make money by providing services to American productions and by churning out softcore porn garbage like the "confessions" films, it's inability to address modern audience requirements subsequently being demonstrated further by financially disastrous flops like Honky Tonk Freeway (1981).
Useful extras include an introduction by Martin Scorcese and a couple of documentaries. Real-life model Pamela Green features prominently in the film as does the work of photographer Harrison Marks.

I remember discussing that film on another website a while back, but I can't remember which one. Purpleport maybe.

Movie review? Where? I see a lot of unsupported and undocumented speculative conclusions about the impact of the film, but NOTHING about the actual film; which, BTW is now generally considered a classic, landmark in the history of cinema with a 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

Actually it's more like a review of a DVD release with a few general observations on the British film industry added in. I'm sure there isn't much I could tell you about the film itself that you don't already know. It's simultaneously a psychological horror film and a kind of black comedy about the film industry.

Some interesting background information here. Some scenes in the film were shot at Pinewood Studios on sets copied from those at Harrison Marks' Gerrard St studio in Soho.

Well you see, Harrison Marks was a well known photographer who advised on the photography scenes in Peeping Tom.

Ken Marcus is probably too young to remember Harrison Marks.

I wasn't born when Peeping Tom was released in 1961, but I'm familiar with Harrison Mark's pioneering work, the best of which I think compares favourably with anything else being done in the 1950s. He was ahead of his time in that he didn't romanticise his subjects in the demeaning way that was then generally accepted in nude work.

When you read this it tends to undermine the sympathy you would otherwise feel for Powell as the director of Peeping Tom. Today, he would end up in court.
