I'm headed home! First year participating at Burning Man.

For the models out there, do you do any modeling on playa? If so, how do you arrange shoots with photographers you want to work with, given the lack of digital communication out there?

There seems to be an overall negative sentiment about modeling and photography at BM, and while I understand the eye-rolling about Insta-models #hashtagging their commodified outfits and lining up for their selfies in front of art installations, I'm an artist, and I can't imagine going to an art festival and not finding some people to go make some art while I'm there.

Burning Man is very hot and dry. The sun burns your skin and it hurts. You also get dirt in your mouth and eyes. When the dirt gets in your eyes it also hurts.

I mean. I dont think I'd be feeling particularly shoot-worthy when I havent washed my hair in a week and I've been rolling around in the dirt all day. I also probably wouldnt want to take time away from the actual event to get dragged off into the desert for hours (because "I just want to shoot this thing real quick!" always turns into "oh lets do this real quick too! and then that real fast! and then this other thing just a couple shots! then lets go to the other side of the desert real quick!") to do work when I'm supposed to be on vacation.

If I were traveling with other artist friends and we were keeping it simple and casual...maybe. But scheduling stuff with strangers? Not the hassle I want.

The last thing I would want to do is photograph a dust covered model with a dust covered camera.

The personal vs professional use rules are pretty straightforward at Burning Man (see link above) and so too is the permitting process/fees.

I know many photographers that go every year and fall into one category or the other that never have any problems and always come back with some great images.

Here's an example of commercial vs personal use:
