A general rule of thumb regarding scam is that if you have any reason to suspect that it is a scam, then it most probably is one.

And this one almost certainly is.

Same decades-old Nigerian Scam! http://www.newmodels.com/Nigeria.html

First clue is "hello" with no name! Too lazy to bother adding your name.
Next clue is...everything after that!
Nobody legit offers payment up-front, and certainly would never have you supposedly handle paying someone else for them!

Cease all contact! Do not give them your contact info.
If you already have, anything they send you is fake!
Never post private info on Mayhem...it is visible to every scammer in the world!
If you were first contacted by someone within Mayhem, report them to the Moderators.
If by email determine where they got it from. Is it listed in your Instagram? Wherever you have it showing online, remove it. Expect more of them.

Hello CHRISTAL,
Good afternoon, trust you are doing well?

PLEASE READ THE PAYMENT PLAN CAREFULLY:
I will like to trust you take care of the make-up artist fee, because I am having a very tight schedule this day, so ESPRIT management will pair the make up artist payment together with your transport payment of $300 in a single check, you will deduct $300 from the total funds that will be sent to you, Then send the balance left on it to the make-up artist, Who will be sorting out other necessary payments with the funds.

(For Example: you may received a paycheck of $2,000, you will cash it and deduct your transport fee of $300 then send the remaining $1,700 to the make up artist).

Your Full Payment Of $1,400 for 5 HOURS SHOOT will be paid to you immediately after the shoot right on the location.
We decided to pair the payments together because the makeup artist is currently not in the location where her bank operates and also we want to build trust between ourselves and also to create awareness.

So, you read all the above posts, and still have to ask if it is a scam?  As I said above it is the standard Nigerian scam. http://www.newmodels.com/Nigeria.html  (more than half a century old)

Did you get this as a Mayhem message from a member? If so, report them to Mayhem's moderators. https://www.modelmayhem.com/contactamod

If you got it as an actual email, how did they get your email? If so, they could easily have shared it with other scammers, so expect more. Don't trust unsolicited emails, and don't be quick to share private contact info with those you have not established a relationship with.

They don't know what your city is and it makes no difference because there will be no shoot.

What sense does it make for them to bring their crew and equipment to you?

That's an inept attempt at a scam by someone who clearly doesn't have much of a clue about either commercial photography or the English language. Most criminals are basically stupid people.

Bryan Petrucci is a real person, but he's a financial adviser, not a casting director;

Could you turn a scam like this on it's perpetrators by opening an account, paying their check into it, withdrawing all the money as soon as it clears, then closing the account and disappearing? I don't know.

I do.  They call that "Bank Fraud".

"Disappearing" is very difficult if you have to show real, legal ID - like a bank typically requires to open an account, particularly with a dodgy check.

You're probably right. But obviously, in order to send you a convincing check, the scammers would need to have a real bank account and the bank you paid the check into would take the money out of that account, if there were sufficient funds in the scammers' account to cover the check. In that case there would be no fraud on your part where the bank was concerned and therefore, no need to disappear.

If the check "bounces", the fraud is on the part of the scammers who sent you a check they didn't intend to honour. If you close your account after withdrawing the money, the scammers' bank will probably have a hard time claiming back the money from an account in another bank that no longer exists, so they will go after the scammers for the money missing from their account.

The whole point about a scam like that is that it's ostensibly a legitimate business transaction, the intention on the part of the scammer is for the victim to regard it as such. And if you do, you're not committing any crime by depositing a check and then withdrawing the money. Whether the authorities will believe you is another matter of course, for all they know you could be working with the scammers. So I do not recommend trying anything like this even if it does seem like poetic justice.
