The "average" non-model or non-photographer always thinks it's for money. Is it?

What are the (other) reaasons?

If you'd like to answer just to me directly, send me a friend request and we can exchange email addresses over PM.

I work in the financial industry and I look at numbers all day. Modeling is my creative outlet.

I was never very good at other types of art - painting, drawing, etc. But I am good at this.

Similar to Ivy, I was not talented in visual arts. I was that kid in elementary school whose crafts projects were absolutely abyssmal-looking. I struggle with certain aspects of visuospatial reasoning, and tend to assemble things backwards or upside down. I tried painting, drawing and sculpting numerous times and never could do any of them worth a damn. Visual directions and instructions make little sense to me; I'm only really capable of reading completely written/verbal instructions, then building a separate, specific visual representation in my head. As a result, I was also unable to build simple visual things like Lego block structures or even accurately following Bob Ross tutorials; I tend to "see" the pictorial-type assembly guides backwards for whatever reason.

I was good at writing and music, but those things did not give me the same sense of excitement or inspiration that beautiful visual arts could evoke. After college, I discovered I could pose for painting and drawing classes, get paid for it, and vicariously be a visual artist that way. Subsequently, I've been published as both as a photographer and as a model. Though nature initially seemed  greatly opposed to it, the photographic arts - on both sides of the camera - have enabled me to be a visual artist in my own right.

I love this question. I wish I had thought to ask it.

I know why I love being a photographer. but If I have a better understanding of a model's motivation, I believe it will only serve both of us better.

I'm looking forward to reading the responses.

Modelling gives me the same creative expression that dance does.creating an I interesting picture, or being muse or a part of one is rewarding.

I wound up on modelmayhem because my ex boyfriend's sister had an account, and I wanted better myspace photos than the other girls at school

I stuck with modeling because it used to be a lot of fun

I started full-time modeling because it was one of the few jobs available to me when I had extremely limited other options

I started in college because I saw a Craigslist ad and needed money.

I picked it up again after years because I broke up with my BF and I needed updated pictures for my dating profile . Modeling is the boss way to go about that, hah. Stayed because I was having a lot of fun and the extra income is nice.

I have always liked the opportunity to participate in something creative, and the feeling of expression by using my naked body as part of art.  That creative process is rewarding to those of us who don't have the talent or skill to draw or paint but would like to be involved in something artistic.

Very well said.  I totally agree.

I love the answers here. As a photographer who does it for the love/joy of it (obviously... since it's expensive!) it's great to see there are models for whom it's not all about the money.

In fact, probably most of the models I've worked with, that has seemed to be the case.

With one I booked a two hour session, but she said she loved what I was creating (I had shown her some of the photos on the back of the camera) and didn't want to force a time limit, so we stayed until we felt we had captured what we wanted to... probably some 3 and 1/2 to 4 hours in all. I loved the fact that while she still did earn a pretty decent paycheck, she was clearly doing it for the love of it, and cared about making art.

I've always been obsessed with photos. Both in front and behind the camera. I don't know what it is or why I love it like I do but that feeling has only continued to grow since I first started modelling in 2001.

If I had to try and analyse it, part of the reason would be that I love the fantasy element of it. I love telling a story through images. I love that people connect with a photo and that it gives me a way to express myself that is also open to some interpretation.I love the people (mainly). The people who love it like I do are also similar people. It took me a long time to find people that I felt like I belonged with. In the creative world, I found them and continue to find them often.

I love that it never gets boring. That there's always something to learn and people who motivate and inspire me. I love that I know I've grown as a model and a photographer but still feel there's so much I could improve on.

I just love it.
