Hi Everyone,

For a while now my hands start to ache after only a couple hours of retouching and i wondered what everyone else does about this problem? Also a few people have advised me to get arthritis / gaming gloves to help ease strain on my hands and wrists. Has anyone else found these help them or use them regularly.

Cheers

Niall

Take a rest, don't force yourself. Your hands must always be relaxed, so don't squeeze the pen and don't put your body in an uncomfortable position. I remember in the beginning when I started using a tablet I used to hold the pen in a way which made me feel hand pain too. But when I noticed that I learned to relax and it no longer happens, so it was not a question of arthritis etc. Remember that whatever work you do with your hands or with any body part for a couple of hours they will start hurting if the posture is forceful for the body. That doesn't mean you are ill. Pain is a natural healthy reaction of the body to protect you from destroying it.

Take a trackball for the easy work and a wacom for the fine work. This will give the hand a lot of rest while doing the easy stuff.

Visit a doctor. When I had back pain first question doctor asked: do you practice any sport daily?
Well no, like 1-2 times a week. So he gave me specific exercises for back like 10-20 min a day.
There are also all sorts of exercises for hands. Look into hand grippers too.

Throw the mouse out and get yourself intuos 5.Working with pen is far more natural, and is in a completely different position. In a meantime, make sure you use mouse pad with wrist support (roll a t shirt or any cloth and place it under your wrist so it is elevated, it should relieve some stress).

Tenured wisdom...
As a classical guitarist I would not be able to play without daily physical therapy
Here are Essential Hand Stretches For Guitarists which is a video that will provide insight on the aforementioned...

Niall keep in mind that this is not meant to provide medical guidance...
Please seek professional medical help here...
There are a myriad of issues involved that only a highly trained physician who specializes in hands will likely be able to deal effectively with your problem.

Hands are among the most delicate structures in the human body, filled with a complex network of fine bones, tendons, nerves and blood vessels.  Don't place them at risk, k?

Hope this helps Niall... or is at least food for thought...

For long periods of mouse work... I have a small cloth bean bag wrist pad.   Its filled with round soft material that can change... and be formed into different shapes easily.   It is flexible...and it provides just enough variableness so my muscles, tendons, bones don't stay rigidly out of place for long periods of time.  I teach Photoshop all day long for a living... so my wrist needs a little support too just like you are mentioning. This support aid doesnt get in my way,  and is comfortable.   They have these  "Carpel Tunnel Stress Relievers"  for keyboards too.   I got my  "Bean Bag Wrist Rest"  from Amazon for about 10 bucks - here:
