I have a couple coming up and suddenly realize I haven't the foggiest idea how (or even if necessary) to protect the model's labia from the tape's glue.  I'm assuming that the best course would be to  cut to size a strip of tape and mount a soft cotton lining to it, then hold the assembly in place with tape adhering to the less delicate skin of the outer labia.  A thong might serve for some designs but not for others.

Anybody got any better ideas?

I read a post from a model on Instagram who stated black electrical tape was very toxic and should never be put on the skin for long periods of time. She advised against putting it on your nipples especially, but also being part of any "black tape project".

Always a risk for any product not specifically designed for use on the body.  Whether wisely or unwisely we will take risks (or ask our models to take risks, such as bondage, suspension, rock climbing, abandoned buildings, railroad tracks, etc.) in order to get that special picture.  All the more reason to be especially vigilant regarding reactions, even with products specifically designed for use on the skin, and making sure that the model understands the risks inherent.   Before deciding that I wanted to do the project at all, I put several strips on my own body (including my nipples) and left them there for several hours.  No ill effects, but others may have different results.

All IMHO as always, of course.

I know electrical tape faux shibari is popular, but... Yep. Really depends how sensitive the model's skin is. Might be fine on the leg, major reaction on more *sensitive* skin. Or no problem at all... or major hives.

Consider medical-grade paper tape as a first layer - it applied tight enough, it will mimic the "cut in" of electrical tape. However, I've had models react to even this uber skin-safe adhesive....

They make band-aids that are basically what you describe. For certain bodypaint projects, I have utilized them similarly. They cover the model's labia, and I assume that the black tape will hide the band-aids.

Update:

I discussed the problem with the model, who had a friend who had recently done a similar project, and who said that they had taken no special precautions and had no discomfort of any kind. so we did the same thing and had the same results.  NSFW example here: https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/43050547 No problems at all other than that the narrow tape we used had a tendency to loosen with any movement on the model's part.

How does this help answer the OP's question?

Are you just saying don't put tape there?

Done it. The 1st time, model brought  black gaffers tape. Worked fine.

2nd Time, the model, a nurse, brought medical tape and blackened it w/ a magic marker. No problems.
