So I know there's alot of post on here about what you SHOULD do on here, but could anyone advise me on what you SHOULDN'T do. I don't mean the obvious like not responding to people etc, I mean how do you look out for the dodgy people on here. Obviously I wouldn't say yes to someone who's asked me to do a full on nude shoot with no credits or much of a portfolio, but how do you tell apart from the genuine people from the.. not genuine people?!?! What should you look out for? I'm new to this so I know I'm an easy target for perverts/ scammers. Would really appreciate the feedback!

Well, I think your profile says you don't shoot nudes.  As a fine art photographer who shoots primarily nudes, I would pretty much pass you by.

So that should help.  Also you should no that guys who shoot nudes are not all perverts and many who claim they would never photograph a nude may in fact be perverts. What a photographer shoots or doesn't shoot is no indication of whether or not they are a creep.

I think you should be critical of what you see in their portfolio. If they have strong images that can help you create a stronger port then you may want to reach out to them to shoot a trade shoot so you can get images for your port.

I guess you can trust your gut instinct on whether you are comfortable with working with someone. I would suggest a quick coffee with the photog to ask about the shoot and his/ her work process. Then you can see if you jive with that person. I have a first meeting with every new model I work with.

Good luck and welcome to the Mayhem

There are sticky threads at the top of this Newbie Forum. They probably contain much of the information you seek.

Thanks guys
Of course I know not all nude photographers are perverts! I only ask because even though I have stated on my profile I won't shoot nudes, people have still asked me and have also asked me to send test pictures, which obviously I know is not from a professional! It just made me wonder what else I should look out for so I know what is genuine and what isn't.

Well I think you should have a clear idea of what type of work you want to peruse. In other words Fashion, Pin Up, Swimsuit, Lingere, Glamour.

That will help narrow down the photographers you want to work with. Like I said before find the very best of those and work with them TF to help build a strong port.

Be realistic what genre you want to focus. So many models want to do fashion but don't have the model stats to do that.

Also are you modeling for fun, for money / career?

You do have a nice look, I am sure you will be successful.

PS. There are two reasons why photographers ask models if they will shoot nudes with them.

1.  They didn't bother to read your profile

2. They know that a number of models who say they won't shoot nudes, will in fact shoot nudes for the right photographer.

This is a little off topic, but still helpful to clarify. Her profile does not say she doesn't shoot nudes. Rather, she has not checked the box that says "shoots nudes." Many models shoot nudes, and even have nudes in their portfolio with that box unchecked. It makes sense to have a simple line in their portfolio description saying they don't shoot nudes, if they will never consider such a shoot.

Actually if you look at her profile it say "NO" as clear as day. Please look again.

Basically, use common sense. If your gut says there is something wrong, avoid it.

If you feel you need to be accompanied, ask the photographer first, if its okay to bring someone, possibly a girlfriend to help carry outfits etc. Do not just arrive with your husband, or a bodyguard. Otherwise the photographer is the one feeling threatened! Also, do not expect the photographer to pay for your friends expenses, as that is your idea.

Look at the profile, see the comments and tags they have, a good photographer will have good comments!

Whenever I meet a new model, its in a public location, for a public shoot. You do not need company, as there are people in sight! If he suggests your first shoot is in his home, for a boudoir shoot, as a model, I would probably pass on by! Basically, use common sense!

Anyway, I wish you every success! smile

I know I'm new here, but doesn't comment sense dictate that the lady in question, (and all models for that matter) would be safer if they did bring a friend? Being honest, does anybody really know what a photographer is like, just by looking at his/her portfolio?

I'm speaking as a parent now, by the way, and am not looking for an argument, just expressing an opinion.

You're new as you said so you haven't seen the hundreds of posts about escorts.   While some photographers allow them many do not.   In fact I'd say the better ones simply don't.   I'm a parent also and I taught my daughters to be smart and use common sense.   The simple truth is someone who means you harm would also harm your escort.   Escorts and friends coming to shoots are not part of the professional world and while we can debate what that means here.  Again many if not most of the better photographers allow them.

As for the OP.   There are new photographers who may not have much to show and few references if any.   There are other ways to vet people.   Are they on Facebook?   Linkin?   Where do they work?   Do you have a working cell and address of the shoot.
