I'm trying to achieve a similar look in my photos and would like some help to determine how it was done.  I'm going to guess they started by slightly underexposing the image. 
I appreciate any thoughts.

To me it looks like:

Lift the beginning of the curve up so nothing is full black anymore, give the curve a hump in mid-range, shift the color balance for shadows over to red and/or magenta.
