While she's your "protege" and you're "teaching" her to shoot, I won't call her a photographer, she's a picture taker.  I seriously doubt she could set up a real shoot on her own or even understand the basics of photography and she hasn't paid her dues in this field to be called a photographer.  Hanging out with photographers and having everything handed to her in a silver platter does not make her a photographer.
And before the insults begin, I'm the first one to admit my work is crap, but I shoot to please ME and no one else.

OK, I'll bite. (chomp)

This is meant as no more of an insult to you than your post is meant to be of others. By the quality of your photos and your own admission, let's call you a picture taker too. We can reserve the title of "photographer" for someone better.

"paying dues" is a silly measurement of anything that is art and opinion based.

There are always people better and there are always people who are not as good. What is good or not is totally relative anyway. There is certainly room for everyone who enjoys what they do at any level. Punching the button with glee makes us all photographers.

LOL, you can call me whatever the hell you want, considering the source it means nothing to me.
Oh and at least I do my own setting, I don't have anyone setting up my lights for me of giving me free equipment (boy wouldn't that be great).
I guess by your definition any GWC is a photographer.
Utter BS.
