Hey guys...

Recently got this email from a "R Stead" who apparently saw my port on MM. Does it sound like he's a professional to you guys? Would it be worth it for me to pursue this?

Email:

"jordan,

i saw your listing on Model Mayhem and it piqued my interest.  you have a distinctive look, attitude and especially nice eyes and hair.  i'm an amateur photographer based on the East Coast, but am on the West Coast much of this fall, frequently, who has considerable experience in portrait, fashion, landscape and wedding photography.  i'm looking for an attractive, enthusiastic model for a shoot featuring headshots, casual wear and swimwear that would run about 3-4 hours.  so, if you're interested get back to me with your usual rates, availability in the near future, experience, and other details about working with you.  look forward to hearing back from you.  meantime, hope your week is going well.  thanks.

rob"

THanks once again guys!

He says he's not a professional but neither are most of us here. Check references & see if he acted in a professional manner & if the models would work with him again.

He's not lying to you & saying he's something when he's not.

Apparently he is an amateur.  Here's a clue:  "i'm an amateur photographer".

What exactly do you want to know here? I am rather confused. Are you unsure that the guy is safe? Solution: Check references, both those provided and the models that he has listed in his images.
I am not sure exactly what the question is. Do your homework. As questions. If you're unsure of the situation then don't get into it. You can always pass on it, and find someone else. The more you ask questions the more it will become obvious whether or not he's ligit enough to be safe. He will reveal that himself, and it will be pretty easy for you to decide.
Best of luck.

One good clue...
Ask for a link to his portfolio anywhere does he have a website? MM page? OMP page?

Straight up emails with no link to work usaly disapear fast after a request to see current work...

Why is he trolling MM for contacts yet has no portfolio... Look at some of the very new low end portfolios on MM and he can't even get a free online profile running???

Why are you silly?the defination of proffessional also covers attitude and behavior, not just income. You judge a photographer by the quality of his work, the way he treats you,and the compensation he gives you for work with him.Period! Some of the worst and best you can work with will be "Proffessionals" and the same goes for those that have never sold a single image. The trick is to figure out which is which

I'm picking up on a "careful/polite" vibe, but not creepy. Seems like an amateur looking to break into a new type of photography. I was in the same place a little over a year ago: one modeling shoot under my belt and some weddings and portraits. We all start somewhere, and with the dismal response rate of models on MM/OMP/etc., not every email can be hand-crafted, original prose.

As long as you don't mind working with "virgin" model photographers and you don't need to incur travel expenses, bring an escort, keep your expectations low, make sure he knows you have no intention of being a muse, and give him a chance.

Oh, and make sure he knows you don't appreciate not being invited to dinner with Vixen and her bf. wink

I got exactly the same feeling from the guy's message.  Granted, it would have been nice to see some basic punctuation in the message, but I've seen much worse.  You might need to give him more guidance than he gives to you...depending upon how green he is...but I've seen many "established" photographers who were far less respectful.
