Unless you have some pre-shoot deal:

The person who pushes the button for a particular images on the Camera has the Copyright.

So please don't take liberties with the Copyright unless you speak with that person.

Second, if you want to use an image you worked with the photog on, just ask don't steal it off the site and put it in your portfolio. Especially if you got paid for the shoot, it doesn't give you right to use the image.

This PSA brought to you by an apparently pissed-off photographer and an unnamed model who must've really screwed around with one of his shots...

Nope. I was speaking from experience. It happened once, with a MM model I shot with. Withing 10 hours of the shoot, she was harassing me with demands for the photos, within 72 hours, she was on the boards here slandering me for not having the photos delivered yet. I took all of her photos, edited and otherwise, permanently deleted them and burned whatever I had physical copies of and told her to get lost.

I learned A LOT from that experience.

I think a lot of the problems stem from a lack of WRITTEN communication.

It's hard to argue when everything is put into a release....

You are correct! I made the mistake of shooting with her on a very spontanious basis.. I was green still, and she was crazy, I just didn't spend enough time getting to know her first, and she went off the deep end. Freaked the hell out of me, to be quite honest. lol

Now, I have duplicate copies of everything in writing. Both parties sign and get their own copies, after that... there's no excuses. Everything is in writing.

First this latest bitching comes about by way of a few MUAs that I have worked with lately. Taking way too many liberties with their actions.

Second, DANIELA I am terribly sorry for not contacting you back, very unprofessional and disrespectful. The latest castings these past two months have overwhelmed me with emails for which I have managed horribly. Please accept my appology and will talk to you more in private about working together.

As for the rest of you keep the bitching coming but always have a light heart.

Only in the USA, Canada and the UK the person who hires the photographer owns the rights. It's work for hire, when I worked for a studio the owner owned the copyrights not me.

I didn't realise that. So if I paid a photographer to take make comp card shots, I own the copyright? I was given the opposite impression but I didn't know.

No, you don't.  That's not a "work for hire" in the US.  The photographer is not your employee, he is an independent contractor.
