Just saw this on local news...

Model's death highlights anorexia issue

The mother of a Brazilian fashion model who died from complications of anorexia has appealed for parents to take better care of aspiring young models.

The death of Ana Carolina Reston (21) follows growing criticism of the use of underweight models in the fashion world.

"Take care of your children . . . no money is worth the life of your child, not even the most famous (fashion) brand is worth this," her mother, Miriam Reston, told O Globo newspaper.

She said her daughter had been trying to help her family with the money she made as a model. Miriam spoke on national television and to local newspapers to highlight the tragedy.

Ms Reston died on Tuesday in Sao Paulo from a generalised infection caused by an eating disorder in which sufferers obsessively deprive themselves of food in pursuit of an ultra-slim look.

She weighed only 88 pounds (40 kg) and was about five feet, eight inches tall. Doctors consider this weight normal for a 12-year-old girl no more than about five feet (1.5 meters) tall.

Many top models come from Brazil, and thousands of young girls from all walks of life dream of modeling careers, inspired by the international success of Gisele Bundchen or Adriana Lima.

Look for rough weather for thin models for a while as a result of this.

I hope that some good comes fron this tragedy....may it open up the eyes of MANY under weigh models.....there is nothing glamourous or fashionable about a model who weighs 88lb. and is 5'8...........

I had anorexia and bulemia growing up. Ended up hospitalized for it. Models need to realize it's not worth it. And it screws up your metabolism. That's why I struggle with weight now. But I'd never go back to my old ways! This is jsut too sad.

Actually I'm not sure "modeling" can be blamed for this death. Certainly the death of a young woman is tragic, but at 5'8" and 88 pounds, she would have looked like a refuge from a Nazi concentration camp.  I suspect she would lose out on more gigs than she would get. Thin might be good for a fashion model, but this goes way beyond thin and the desiger's outfits would hang on her frame shapelessly, more like on a coat hanger. There is such a thing as 'too thin' for modeling. I suspect her psychological problems were personal to her and can not be blamed on modeling.

Earlier this year I did a private shoot with a lady of about the same height but about 10 pounds heavier. She obviously had psychological problems which I inadvertently fell into. I was paid at the time of the shoot, but she never even bothered to pick up her prints and CD and will still not respond to my emails. I have an envelope with her prints and CD which, which she has never seen and which I'm still holding for her. This lady was not a model and had no interest in modeling, but in her mid 30s was well established in a career.

I'm not at all sure modeling can be blamed for this tragic death.

In memory of Anna - She made the world a little more beautiful - She was a beautiful, vibrant model.. it's a shame no one could see past that into the problem she was having.

It's a really sad thing to watch someone struggle with.  I feel bad for her family.  I also hope that this will open up the eyes of women with eating disorders...  She was only 21!!  Her life had barely started....  sad

from a mother's perspective, that truly breaks my heart...eating disorders are so psychologically powerful.

That's a retouched image of Colette Pechekhonova, and not "real" in this context.
This is the original.
