My subjects are usually under my control, albeit models or stock subjects.

I have asked by the local paper to do a shoot for them, a new field for me.

Any tips would be welcome.

Tip #1 - Ask what kind of shoot it is so we can be more specific with our tips.

If you're planning on doing portraits flash and tripod will get you by but if you're going to cover it as a story forget the tripod and in some cases the flash too.

I've worked as a photojournalist and it's different than shooting fashion or models. In that case your subject is already known....

For a story you will need to look for shots of opportunity and they must tell a story in their own right. If you need to explain a shot it failed.

I'd go with available light whenever possible to keep that atmoshpere as close to natural as possible. Remember to take a tape recorder too or a notepad. Photos must be captioned with correct names or they are useless.

Hope that helps.
