The first approaches the shoot with a specific goal in mind...prepared in advance to achieve the optimum desired results....the second just wings it and takes what they get....

The opinion of incompetent people who just don't know different photographic disciplines???

Question for you:

What seperates a short model (under 5'4") from a commercial 5'6" or a runway model 5'9" (serious runway, top designers)?

perhaps the vision that drives us:

the snapshooter is maybe only trying to make some record of what (s)he sees physically ...

the photographer is trying to create what (s)he sees in the mind ...

May I say Half true.....

The snapshooter, just snaps a random image, the photographer tries to compose that same scene so it tells a story.

I do weddings...during certain events of a wedding certain things usually happen, Like the father daughter dance. Sometimes the father kisses the daughter, sometimes he doesn't. You try to position yourself so that you capture it, if it does...A peck on the cheek and it's over in a blink!

in my avatar...the bride took charge...and it was over in a flash.

photographer can be a snapshooter easier than a snapshooter can be a photographer

but all snootiness aside, snapshots are amatuer photojournalism, people have a right to them.. amatuer means someone who does something because they love it..the family dog peeing on uncle ernie when he passed out under the picnic table.. good stuff

snapshoots kept photography in the financial ballpark, supply and demand, i've never heard of someone who went on a vacation without their camera..

someone who takes photography to a higher level can be a little proud of themselves, but go to a camera club sometime and see what active amatuers do

Certain fine art photography (Adam's "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, 1941" comes to mind), some classic/iconic portraiture and most photojournalism essentially consists of snapshops taken by photographers.

The snapshooter doesn't care to answer the question, and the photographer has better things to do...which means they are the same. wink

You tell me...are you? I know I am and use both planned and spontaneous shooting techniques during every shoot...I enjoy wingin it. For the professional or knowledgeable amateur training and experience in recognizing desirable lighting, composition and spot on timing is what produces quality snapshots. The novice snapshooter is in a zone of his own possessing none of these traits.

Nice snapshots by the way...

A snapshooter can't be bothered with attaching a lens to their camera.

A snapshooter takes pictures of their surroundings.  The photographer will find a way to make those surrounding interesting.

Thought provoking thread.  I luv it!  Interesting to read some of the comments.

What about patience and preparedness?  Or is that wrapped-up with skill and experience?

Photography embraces such a wide variety of styles and art forms that there's a myriad of ways to create an image, to capture a moment, an emotion, or tell a complelling story.  (maybe that's why it's fun & challenging)

Having been a snapshooter (just simply taking a shot), and now striving to improve my photographic skills, I'm more conscious of my purpose, having a plan or vision, and being patient.

But, sometimes I still get lucky!

Guess Henri Cartier-Bresson and Neil Leifer are snap shooters
