Sometimes a photo is really enhanced by cropping off the model's feet, but rarely. I broke the rule in my avatar image and cropped off some of the feet because of interference with the backdrop. What do you think?
Mostly I think the feet, in a full-length figure shot of course, should be included. W

This can not be generalized.  It depends on a lot of things.

All body parts are croppable, but cropping on a joint generally looks strange.

Agreed - In a full-length shot, feet should be included - hence, "full-length".

I think, compositionally, you've done your avatar a service by cropping consistently all around. If you had only cropped her feet in the middle of the arch, but left some open space around her head and back, it would look weird. Just the same as the old rule about never cropping at joints.

As it is, I don't think it looks bad at all. smile

Besides, the chainsaw blade is more likely to jam at a joint than when making a straight cut thru bone

I'm with Collin...only if her feet are size 9+ and stunning though ;-)

Amen Collin. But for sure never cut a body part at the joint as expressed by another poster above.

I like to leave feet in my shots. I think bare feet add intimacy between the subject and the viewer.

sometimes it's really hard to pull decent shoes, so the feets gotta go.

It's Italia to crop out toes like open toe shoes.

Also its wise to crop out anything that smells.

It's a pet peeve of mine, too, but I do it sometimes, occasionally by accident, occasionally for a reason.

kinda funny that when i found these posts about cutting off a model at the joint, there was an advertisement at the top of the page for a joint pain remedy.

If it's compositionally logical, go for it.

The guideline is, crop above the knee or not at all... but it's a guideline. If you're asking for a critique of your avatar, you should post in critique.

Bullhead, you savage...you cropped out all the best parts in your avatar! smile  (humor can sometimes be hard to reflect electronically, but please take this with the lightest of heart...it's meant to be funny).

It makes me want to cry when my feet are cropped. My seam FF stockings, and heels just add to the photo.
