I've often seen people post announcements that say "Anyone want to shoot today"?
..and I don't really get that. Isn't it important who you're shooting with to get the right look for your portfolio? and what are the odds that you're going to get a response from someone that you'd really want to shoot with? Are some people really not that choosey about who they work with? If not, that's fine. Sometimes it's about just getting any experience. But has anyone reading this, done that and got something good for their portfolios?

I'm so curious!

Ugh. I hate that too. It's kind of a waste of time. I mean, for me I'm at a point where it's so early on that I am pretty grateful if anyone near me will shoot with me but still what if you live in Tokyo and someone in Kansas was to say, yes...I want to shoot?

Then what?

I am amazed at how often unplanned shoots can yield some of the best work.  It seems weird but sometimes it works.

I know for me, I don't know when I get free days.

I have models I've already pre-picked to work with..but more often than not I don't have a set schedule. (I work several jobs, and sometimes I get time off that I wasn't aware was coming.)  And therefor, the models have to learn to fly by the moment, and most get irritated and walk away long before we get the chance to shoot.

So...posting "Anyone want to shoot today?" is a valid question.

Sometimes its not about the "perfect idea"...more so that its about relaxing and just letting go.  So you don't NEED the perfect model, you need someone spontaneous and willing.

Well, it usually means we're bored, or a shoot fell through, and rather than waste the day away we'd like to do something. Get in some practice, try something new, maybe build a new model/photographer relationship.

So.

Well, it's a bit late, or I'd say, anyone wanna shoot.

I resemble that remark! Have you dried off from that shoot, yet? smile

Well I guess it does sound more fun than my typical "who wants to meet a couple times before a shoot to go over ideas and tear sheets, wardrobe fitting, etc." But I really do think that meeting with someone at least once before a shoot really helps the comfortable factor during a shoot.

One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the people on MM are very professional. Some of them don't even bring escorts! Those who are experienced will get comfortable quickly.

I posted that once on the announcements, and I DID have a local contact me and we shot that very next day.  It worked out fine, and I had some of those shots in my port for a long time.  I think she's still got a couple of mine in her's.
So I would say if you ask me, announcing "anyone want to shoot today?" yeilds positive results 100% of the time.  It's statistically proven.

I think it's pretty lame....to post a bulletin asking, "anybody wanna shoot "as well. But it seems my spontaneous shoots have always worked out the best, I wish I knew why? It's the planned shoots that never ever seem to take place.

Will it produce a shoot?  In a major market yeah, probably.  Will it produce quality product?  How lucky are you feeling?

It's not about luck.  If you are a skilled photographer, you can make something out of nothing.

It all comes down to your ability...

I've never done it, but I think it's mostly for fun, getting to know others and the chance of a wonderful spontaneous photo.. The odd cancellation could also be a motivating factor.

Well I have had luck with posting that..."anyone want to shoot"  for me its about transforming the person with make up.  If the person is not what i need for my beauty portfolio, i suggest special effects.  If i have free time, i would practice on anyone.  thats just me though.  For a professional shoot...no i would not just want anyone.

Well, my avatar is an example of the way I shoot. If the person posting the request to shoot that day has a look that I want to work with, I'll contact them - I'd expect the same from the person contacting me, if I were to post a request for a spontaneous shoot.

What is the difference between shooting with someone who contacted you THAT day for the shoot, and setting it up in advance?

I generally do not meet with models before the day of the shoot - Los Angeles is too spread out - though I don't have an objection to it...

So..... I don't see a problem with posting to shoot on short notice. tongue

Some of us really enjoy photography, so we do it whenever we get the chance. Hence the spontaneous, "Anyone want to shoot today?" posts. It's not always about the money. Sometimes it's about getting out and just doing something you like to do.

Well....let's put this into a different perspective:

They aren't really advertising to shoot. Maybe one or two are, but I've figured out that when someone is especially proud of their new work, they tend to post an announcement to bring people to their page. Interesting form of self promotion. Basically, they can't think of anything more clever to say, so that's a last resort.

I could be wrong, but if I am, I'm only 1/3 wrong. That's to cover the 2/3 who actually are looking to shoot.

Bingo....
My current skill set I'm learning is outdoor work. simple on the fly, no lights maybe a reflector maybe not. I want to be able to pick up my camera, grap model or client, and be able to produce  quality work on a moments notice. any weather, any location, any time of day.

I've never done it, but I don't see it as a bad thing. IMHO, almost no amount of planning can guarantee a good TFP or TFCD shoot. I've had the most professional models do a no show on me -- and I've had flakey-sounding amateurs who have never done a single shoot produce absolutely amazing work.

So I think it's actually a good idea.

Ha, I'm one of the special percentage then...if I post it, I AM looking to shoot. A mini adventure, you never know what will happen.
