MM Nicknames,... Why not be Honest?
Is it me or the more amateur the photographer the more stupid Nickname of "_____ studios"? If so Models be careful!! If you can google that nickname a website should be avalaible for that business. Otherwise its a GWC living some cheap dream... And models, use your name whenever possible please. Its so much more professional. -Marek Oct 15 06 01:05 pm Link I signed up as Gerkindick, but they wouldn't accept it.. *shrug* Oct 15 06 01:06 pm Link W.G. Rowland wrote: LOL... but .. good. When I see your nickname now at least it carries some respect Oct 15 06 01:10 pm Link Gee, we haven't done this thread in almost two weeks. Oct 15 06 01:10 pm Link Marek Mezyk wrote: I've been using this business name for 18 years. If you Google it you come up with my website under that name, which also has publically available Whois info with my name. My website & MM profile both also contain my real name. The biz name is catchy & easy to remember, my last name's a pain. Oct 15 06 01:13 pm Link SLE Photography wrote: That makes sense. And as far as Googling and finding it then that's great. I suppose the trend picked up in the amateur circles where they want to ride on folks like you. When you have a guy with ABC studios asking how do you set a camera with aperture and shutter setting, we got the nicknames of 'studios' or 'ABC Photography' seem like its a joke. But I do not doubt some are true to their nicknames. Oct 15 06 01:20 pm Link Ok, so when you want to find a website is it easier to remember great photos by "Fluffytek" or "Marek Mezyk". FYI your domain seems to be broken or unavailable as "MarekMezyk.com" didnt come back wheras surprise surprise fluffytek.com does. Oct 15 06 01:20 pm Link Carpe Imago Photography wrote: I wasn;t around for that one I guess. But for all the new models and photographers joining in I guess they must have missed it. What does the name mean to people? Oct 15 06 01:22 pm Link Fluffytek wrote: My website is a mess at the moment, but my name exists as valid as my reputation in the photo genre. But its not so much on the website that I am hang up on, its the mere fact that people try to hide their identity. Oct 15 06 01:25 pm Link Fluffytek wrote: one more thing, ... not putting down Fluffytek.com... but isn't using your a more professional expression for your work? Oct 15 06 01:28 pm Link Marek Mezyk wrote: I'm sorry that my standards are not high enough for you. But the reverse is true also. Oct 15 06 01:34 pm Link Marek Mezyk wrote: So why isnt "Microsoft Corp" actually "Bill Gates Software Corp". It is very commmon not to use your real name when running a business, especially if you have moe than one. Oct 15 06 01:36 pm Link In that case, am I unprofessional and disorganized? "Jade" just seems more glamourous than, uh, "Elizabeth"...anyway, lotsa models and actresses use the pseudonym thing-Marlylin Monroe was never her real name. Oct 15 06 01:38 pm Link i prefer the veil of a screenname when on the internet. i don't need the 'respect' and I don't need the stalkers, freaks, and golddiggers either. you think there is ANYTHING that is 'professional' about doing business by flirting in the shout box? yakkin on a forum, or begging TFP shoots with 'models' who think 'shudder speed' is the length of time it takes them to weaken the knees of the 12-year-old accessing their images on fuckmeblind.com? lets get real, k? Oct 15 06 01:40 pm Link hah! shudder speed, funny...... oh, btw, i suggest to models that they use a screen name and NOT their real name. Oct 15 06 01:44 pm Link Jphoto wrote: *nod* One of my GFs is a model. She uses a "screen name" that's her name in another language because shortly after she established a net presence (she's pretty well known online in some circles & easy to search out) she started getting harrassed by morons, so she switched. She's got all her model profiles & a website linked under that name, and she gives out her real name if you're arranging legit work with her, and it's on her biz cards. But a little discretion sabes her a ton of hassles. Oct 15 06 01:51 pm Link Heh, I just went thru a tool I use that lets me track all visitors to my site, where they come from, how they got there, what they looked at, etc etc. to see how many searches I'm getting. I'm getting hit at least twice a day off Google searches, not for my name, but for people searching for images under the search term "Lingerie Flip." One of my images is the #1 result. Who'a thunk that title would be such a common search term????? Oct 15 06 01:53 pm Link This affects you how? I can't speak to the GWC issue, but the internet generation is entering the industry now. Using pseudonyms is second nature for us. I can't count the number of friends I have who go by a pseudonym originated on the internet in real life. I cant count the number of people in San Jose who know me as either nightwings (*shudder* from my high school "I'm so goth" days) or Meris and probably couldn't tell you my real name to save their lives. I've dated at least 2 different guys who I never referred to by given names. I couldn't tell you today what their real names were. Drakon and Kitty is the best I could do for you. Then again, maybe this is just the nerdier ones among us. Either way almost as many people know me as Meris as Stephanie Maulding, so why not use it for a pseudonym? It's only natural that we adopt names in the industry that reflect the climate in which we grew up. Plus there are about a dozen other reasons. It's harder for Grandma to stumble across. It's catchy and unique and easy to remember. It easily allows for expansion if I manage to turn it into a larger studio with many employees and services, etc. etc. Which sounds better? "Stephanie Maulding photography, retouching, digital art and web design" or "Starla Meris Imaging"? [Sorry for the rambling response. My model flaked on me so I'm bored and pissed off this afternoon.] Oct 15 06 01:59 pm Link Marek Mezyk wrote: Not all of us are in business. Does that make us GWCs because we lack a swish website? Oct 15 06 02:27 pm Link I myself am not seeking fame or fortune nor do I have the time to keep up with a website. There's no need to have one if I am not out to seek money. I do my photography and modeling, for the matter strictly for the pleasure of it (and sometimes for the pleasure of others). I don't think it matters, does it honestly? Just because someone uses their actual name doesn't necessarily make them more professional or even better than anyone else. Flulffytec to me is so much more enthralling. Honestly...if I had to choose I would have chosen to visit that website just for the sheer curiosity of it. Oct 15 06 02:34 pm Link Marek Mezyk wrote: First, it's quite possible that the photographer is referring to either a "virtual" studio, or is living in a studio appartment, or both. Oct 15 06 02:39 pm Link Hmmm... My Studio name is my screen name, my real name is the first thing you see in my profile. Have a full time studio that cost me 3 grand a month, 50 grand in equipment, my only income is thru my photography... and so on... If this makes me a GWC then Right On! BTW, Google Double Eagle Studios when you get time. Anyone want to shoot with this GWC? Oct 15 06 02:42 pm Link I don't know which of these quotes I like better, so I'll quote them both... W.G. A consistent professional attitude, and a great port mean more than a name. I usually barely notice them, unless it's someone I've heard of prior. Yeah...it's been about two weeks since the last thread about this... Oct 15 06 03:25 pm Link Under your definition I know of plenty internationally published photographers that are GWCs.. they don't use their name as their 'business' name. Bastards. Oct 15 06 03:37 pm Link I've been called Bunny since I was three or four years old. My grandmother started off calling me Häschen, and it carried over as 'Bunny' to the English-speakers of the family. If someone calls me Stephanie, I usually don't realize they're speaking to me. Besides that, I had several photographers set up shoots with me after seeing me play roller derby as Bunny Rebel, and they preferred to use that name as opposed to my real one. My comp cards say 'Bunny' on them, but they also list my full, given name as well. Oct 15 06 03:40 pm Link Try explaining "Sleepy Weasel" to people. I can usually tell right away the people I'd rather associate with that get a kick out of the name versus the "stuffies". Some poeple have no sense of humor. I don't like those people. Oct 15 06 04:46 pm Link My name is Randy I shoot in stereo (3D) hence the superhero porn name stereorandy When you see me coming at you, I'm coming in 3D! Oct 15 06 05:05 pm Link Because I have an extensive criminal backrgound. Oct 15 06 05:16 pm Link I always thought Buck Naked would be a good porn name. To quote someone much more creative than me - "I ams what I ams and that's all that I ams" - P.T.S.M. (no studio, but a really descriptive name) I like Richard, he makes me laugh too!
