When asked I always tell new models that its ok to bring a friend along for their first shoot with me if they wish....

Iive had couple of situations though where the friend has been equally beautiful and photographable as the model and Ive shot both - with everyone enjoying themseelves and benifitting ..

Just wondering how I would handle it if someday - the friend turns out to have more potential  ( without hurting anyones feelings )

Tie up the model while you take pictures of her escort?

Quietly pull her aside and pee on her. This will mark her as your territory.

Take pictures of the really hot escort and the model and just use what is beneficial to your portfolio.

Offer to shoot both of 'em, then tell the "model" to keep moving to her left.  Keep moving her to her left until she's out of the frame.  I keep my escort chipper on the right side of the studio anyway, so if I keep moving her to her left far enough, the problem will take care of itself.

Ask the escort if she wants photos too?

No peeing required...or "Move left" trickery...

I gotta get off of model mayhem this is craziness

See if you can arrange to get her back on her own. After all, she has seen you work, and should be comfortable with the idea. At least get a name address and phone - you can almost pull that off by 'recording' the name etc. of your model's 'escort' to the shoot. Then call her later.

This way, your model won't feel put down. Handle it right - the model will be proud of giving an opportunity to a friend. I've been in this sorta situation a couple  times, and it worked out ok.

I had a shoot where a shy model who wanted nudes of her tattoos was having trouble working up to it.    Her better looking escort just took off her clothes and said, "Look, i'll even go first."

Problem kind of solved itself.

Nah, don't do that.  Just refuse to take anything seriously and you'll be much happier!

(I don't actually have an escort chipper in the studio)

I pay attention to the model I have and at the end when we are chatting simply ask the other to shoot sometime. They always say yes after seeing how much fun it is and the images that come from the shoot and your model is happy because she just had a great time and was the focus of your attention.

You know that is what I think EVERY time I meet a photogropher for the first time;

That if I recognize him first, walk up and say: "Hi, are John, the photogropher?"
and he'd be like: "Yes, I am.  Are you a friend of a model I am meeting?"

I had to shoot a H.S. senior one time and he showed up with his  girlfriend who was totally hot.  After I shot the paid session, I was up front and honest about wanting to photograph the girl friend by herself.  They were cool with it and I continued to shoot images of her.

Hand the model a reflector. LOL (Or put her in the chipper. Not my style, though.)

In seriousness, if you set up a shoot with a model, then shoot that model.  The presumed agreement is not "I am completely willing to shoot you, provided you refrain from bringing someone more attractive, at which point our previous arrangement will be considered null and void and I shall commence to shoot the person you brought along forthwith and posthaste..." and soforth...

Why don't we put this shoe on the other foot?  Let's say you set up a shoot with a model and you have an assistant with you who happens to be a talented, budding photographer.  Maybe his book is laying around somewhere on the set and as you're fiddling with your camera the model looks it over.  She then says to you...

"Hey, your assistant has potential... I know you and I arranged to shoot, but... uh, do you mind if we cut our time short so that I can set up an impromtu session with him eventhough that's not what he's here for?  I mean, I know it's probably inappropriate, but you understand, right?  It's not a slight against you or anything.  Really.  I mean, I really like your work or else I wouldn't have agreed to shoot with you and the fact that I'd rather shoot with him than you doesn't mean your work is bad.  Really.  You are a wonderful photographer deep down.  It's not you, it's me.  Why don't we just be friends...?"

Okay... perhaps I got a little carried away at the end, but the point is that it strikes me as a bit untoward to even bother with figuring a way "to shoot the escort and not hurt the model's feelings."  Shoot the person who you agreed to shoot.  Give the escort your card and tell her that you'd love to shoot her some other time.  If the model and the escort suggest doing it right then, so be it.  Otherwise, just shoot the dang model.

You'll probably come across some other model with more potential than the escort anyway...
