Bump means that you made a posting that "bumped" the thread back to the top of the forum.

As each new thread isi posted the old threads move down the page so if you want your thread back at the top you "bump" it.

or you just type in nonsence but a bump is honest self promotion.

It's the begining of the term 'bump-n-grind' which is a metaphor for S.E.X.

From Wikipedia:

The word BUMP may refer to:

    * Bump (internet), raising a thread's profile by returning it to the top of the list of active threads (i.e. Bring Up My Post)
    * Bump (television), a short video segment used in advertising, especially by TV programming block Adult Swim
    * Bump (football), also known as a hip and shoulder is a body contact alternative to a tackle and shepherding method in Australian Rules Football
    * Bump (professional wrestling), making actual contact with another individual, an object, or the ground
    * Bump (dance), a dance popularized initially in the roaring twenties, and later repopularized by in the 80s by hip-hop music
    * Bump (pricing game), a game played on The Price Is Right from 1985 through 1991
    * Bump (rowing), a feature of rowing at Oxford and Cambridge
    * Bump (game), a variant of basketball used in physical education courses
    * Bump (Transformers), a Maximal in the Transformers toyline
    * The removal of passengers from an overbooked airline flight
    * A "shout out"
    * A dosage of some illegal substance (slang, most often in reference to cocaine)
    * The shape of a pregnant abdomen
    * A technique of lockpicking

I hope this helps..

Bump can be a useful tool especially in casting or market on active needs.

Too often it is used by members who cannot stand the fact that within 10 minutes that do not have a rush of responders to the thread,  especially stupid on Friday nights or Holiday nights.

Whhhhaaaaa,  I posted 5 minutes ago and I need attention.

I had a suggestion for this once.  A thread would not be "bumped" if the original poster replied to the thread.  And when someone else posts, it does not take it to the top but takes it half way (rounded to the nearest integer, of course.)  So one response does not move it back up, but a lot of traffic will keep it near the top.  Should be an easy software fix.

Ah, the fine art of bumping.

My specialty.

Secrets from a Pro:

Any post you make in a thread will snatch it away from oblivion and send it soaring back up to the top.  You don't have to say "bump."  Even just a period (.) will work.

Never say "bump" - that alerts everyone to the fact you have absolutely no life whatsoever other than sitting at your computer hoping someone will make some lame comment about some dull brainless dim-witted subject that’s already been beaten to death ad nauseam.

Instead, go through all the dull brainless dim-witted replies that were posted and find “something” to make your own dull brainless dim-witted response to.  Quote that response then just type something like “I agree”, “true dat”, or “you’re a dull brainless dim-wit” – just to get thing going again.  That will impress all the other members cause they'll think: "Wow! this guy has been so busy he hasn't even had time to read or respond to things said in his own thread -  he's got a life!!!!"

Another secret is to watch your thread sink to the bottom as the minutes and then hours slowly pass by.  Even though you have some dull brainless dim-witted response you’re dying to add, don’t waste it while your thread is still near the top.  Patiently wait, like a tiger in the woods, till your thread gets to the bottom of the page and then strike!  Viola! – another perfectly timed successful operation – your thread is back on top and you can again begin watching it slowly sink to the bottom.

It is due to artful and successful bumping procedures performed here by the pros that makes everyone addicted to the MM forums (instead of those “other” Model Places).

It is skillful bumping that is what really creates “Blockbuster Threads” you can be proud of such as:   Why do some photographers insist on no escorts??? (over 3,500 dull brainless dim-witted replies – and counting – at the time of this posting).
